Big Little Lies set in World War II era Greenwich Village! An irresistible, suspenseful novel about four women who marry into an elegant, prosperous Italian family, and then must take charge of the family's business when their husbands are forced to leave them during the war.Meet the Godmothers: Filomena is a clever and resourceful war refugee with a childhood secret, who comes to America to wed Mario, the family's favored son. Amie, a beautiful and dreamy French girl from upstate New York, escapes an abusive husband after falling in love with Johnny, the oldest of the brothers. Lucy, a tough-as-nails Irish nurse, ran away from a strict girls' home and marries Frankie, the sensuous middle son. And the glamorous Petrina, the family's only daughter, graduates with honors from Barnard College despite a past trauma that nearly caused a family scandal. All four women become godmothers to one another's children, finding hope and shelter in this prosperous family and their sumptuous Greenwich Village home, and enjoying New York life with its fine dining, opulent department stores and sophisticated nightclubs. But the women's secret pasts lead to unforeseen consequences and betrayals that threaten to unravel all their carefully laid plans. And when their husbands are forced to leave them during the second World War, the Godmothers must unexpectedly contend with notorious gangsters like Frank Costello and Lucky Luciano who run the streets of New York City. Refusing to merely imitate the world of men, the four Godmothers learn to put aside their differences and grudges so that they can work together to protect their loved ones, and to find their own unique paths to success, love, forgiveness, and the futures they've always dreamed of.

I had never heard of this book before a bunch of Littens read it a few months ago and sparked my curiosity. This is the story of four sisters-in-law united by marriage and a shared love and loyalty for their on the fringe of the mafia family. These are strong and determined women, which just happens to be my favorite type of women to read about, and their story was filled with excitement and family secrets making it a fun weekend read.

TheBookKeepers Oh this sounds great! 2y

23 #26 This was not what I expected it to be but it was very good. I mean with the name like the The Godmothers I shouldn‘t be surprised that it was about the mob. But it was a softer kinder version. And Godmothers are way smarter than Godfathers.

Enjoyed this book. I usually don't reread books but I am sure I will reread this one. It's set in the 1930's - 50's, with a little bit in the 1980's and 2019. It's a historical novel focusing on an Italian Crime Family.

I became part of this book. I went through a whole string of emotions with it. It's beautifully written. I felt the ups and downs of this family. I enjoyed the fact that the women took charge when during that time period it was not the way things were done.

I recommend this book to anyone that likes historical fiction, crime books, or family sagas.

I won this in a Goodreads Giveaway. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I saw so many people reading this on here and I was experiencing FOMO so I had to read it. I like a story with strong women characters and this did deliver; however, I thought it was a bit unbelievable in spots in my humble opinion.

Cinfhen GREAT flowers 😍 2y
RebelReader @Cinfhen My house is full of flowers right now. I was at Trader Joe‘s and had to get my usual mix and then they had tulips(my fav) and then Paul got me a dozen roses for Valentines Day! I do love flowers! ❤️🌷💐🌸 2y

1. My library holds that come in pretty much dictate what order I read things. Also my IRL book groups.

2. I read every day of the week, but I love to read outside the best. I figure by April 1st I might be able to do a few afternoons if I dress warmly. 🤣🤣

My January reads that I finished- 9 in total. Going across the first 5 were buddy reads: #goldenagecrimeclub #sundaybuddyread #literarycrew #Janeandtheexcellentreadalong #seriesmysteries #jumpstart2003

Apologies to all regarding buddy reads & discussion participation on my part this month. There have been family health issues & work issues that have exhausted me! February looks much brighter!

Finished last Sunday for #SundayBuddyRead but I failed to get a review post up. I would say that mafia stories aren‘t my thing so I likely never would have read this if @TheBookHippie hadn‘t picked it but I really found myself caught up in the stories of the 4 godmothers & their life in NYC from the 1940s, through the war years and into the 1950s. It made me watch the first 2 films in The Godfather saga (I am slowly slugging through the 3rd) & ⬇️

DebinHawaii …had me Googling & looking for more info which is always a good sign in historical fiction. It‘s not perfect, I felt the ending was a bit rushed & wrapped up too neatly in some cases but I enjoyed the ride & the always interesting Sunday book discussions. 2y

It's a business travel kind of week so my days feel extra long but it's nice to get on the road and see a couple new-to-me hotels I've never visited before. Luckily I know the managers, so the transition is easy.

Finally finished The Godmothers. Going to start Ghost 19 and hopefully get to the other two this week, as well.

But for the #SundayBuddyRead I would never have picked up this book, but so glad I did as this was an excellent read. I especially enjoyed the section covering the Second World War Years. Would really have liked to know what happened following the end of the main story and the death of the Godmothers. Thanks @TheBookHippie for your work on the read and for choosing the book. Recommended.

What a fun and interesting read. The story of 4 women and the “mafia-adjacent” family that brought them together. This needs to be made into a tv show! #sundaybuddyread

I started the day with a brutal headache and spent the rest of it reading. I‘m ready for #sundaybuddyread now ❤️ I quite enjoyed this story and how it wove real life gangster stories through it. Sometimes the dialogue was a bit ‘basic‘ 🤷🏻‍♀️ most of the time I just imagined Ray Liotta /Joey Perrini playing some of the roles

TheBookHippie Sorry about the headache it‘s been a horrible season for them. 2y

Fantastic pick by @TheBookHippie for #SundayBuddyRead. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Historical fiction about 4 smart, strong women who are sisters-in-law, and part of a mob family. They all have secrets - big ones. And, they all have a fierce love and loyalty to their family. The characters are fictional, but many of the gangsters with whom they interact were real. Fascinating.

#SUNDAYBUDDYREAD #52BookClub2023 #Pantone2023

This is a book I wouldn‘t have read if it weren‘t for #SUNDAYBUDDYREAD. Great pick, @TheBookHippie I‘ll save my thoughts for our final discussion on Sunday but I will say this cover does not do this book justice. I‘m not judging the book by its cover— I‘m judging the cover!

#sundaybuddyread I I could not stop reading until I finished this fantastic book!Early I know but I suspect I may not be the only one!As usual @TheBookHippie enriched this reading with her prodigious research & challenging discussion questions.Spanning from 1934 to 2019, this family saga is of NYC gangsters,& strong formidable women. The four “godmothers”bound by blood & love of family, resolve to save their family in the 1930s/40s.Love this read!
