Librarybelle This shows that even Holmes can be led astray (Armstrong and his tactics). It also shows a tad bit of vulnerability with Holmes—Watson‘s concern that Holmes will seek opium again. 3d
dabbe @Librarybelle Also, Holmes shows quite a bit more emotion and empathy with Staunton as he kneels over his wife--even the picture shows that. Our mathematical-solving machine has quite a bit of heart, and it keeps growing over these stories. 3d
Cuilin The impulse to put the doctor at ease in the cottage and communicate his understanding is demonstrating a softer side to Sherlock than we‘ve seen before. 3d

Read4life Sorry, @dabbe & @Cuilin My father in law passed Thursday and I haven‘t read this for this week‘s discussion. 3d
Cuilin @Read4life So sorry for your loss Lynn. Take time with your family, books and stories will wait. 3d
dabbe @Read4life So sorry to read this. Stories can wait; you take care of you and your family. You're in my thoughts. ❣️ 3d

Librarybelle I think it really shows society‘s abhorrence of different classes getting together—Staunton has to essentially hide his bride! These works are near the end of the Gilded Age, and there is so much disparity between the rich and the poor and the lack of attention to the poor by the rich. 3d
dabbe I also have to add that Staunton really pisses me off. You put your wife in a lonely place because you want that inheritance money from an uncle you can't stand. The uncle states to Holmes that he has absolutely no interest in Staunton's personal life, so why would Staunton worry about being disinherited? He basically locks her away in a castle (like in a fairy tale). And she willingly goes along with it? #oy! 3d
Cuilin He fell love, they married, she had to hide and then she died!! Says it all. 3d
dabbe @Cuilin Reminds me of the song from A CHORUS LINE: “What I did for love.“ 3d

Librarybelle I‘m not sure if this is the best answer for this, but I felt for this story Holmes really had to use minute clues to solve the mystery. He also had to employ, to borrow the word used by @CogsOfEncouragement , manipulation throughout—not only with Mount James, but also to get the telegram contents. In turn, Holmes is manipulated by Armstrong and led to venture to every village seeking Staunton. 3d
dabbe @Librarybelle I love how you said “mystery“ because to me, there was no crime anywhere ... just a missing person who was missing for (I guess) good reason. Why he couldn't have just left a note saying he had urgent business and wouldn't be able to play, I have no idea. Well, I guess that would then mean no story, right? 🤣 3d
Cuilin A missing persons case 🤷‍♀️ I liked the mystery though again I got excited when they talked about rugby. 🏉 3d
dabbe @Cuilin Indeed. If only he could have written another note saying “Gotta go away for a while“ or something to that effect. But then, no story. 3d

Can you believe we're at story 39? 🤩 Sorry for the later-than-usual post.

Thoughts, Sherlockians?

CogsOfEncouragement Another entertaining tale. Using the dog to track a scent he himself placed was clever. 3d
CogsOfEncouragement I also enjoyed SH manipulating Lord Mount-James to consider how the disappearance of Godfrey could possibly be a problem to himself in order to get him to care. Very amusing. 3d
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement Excellent word to describe what SH did: manipulating. 🙌🏻 3d

Librarybelle Oh yes, @CogsOfEncouragement ! I loved the manipulation part! Very clever. I was more satisfied with this story than last week‘s story. 3d
dabbe @Librarybelle It had one of the most tragic endings, too! 3d
Daisey I found the commentary about sports in this one entertaining as well along with all of the manipulation. 3d
dabbe @Daisey And from someone who knows next to nothing about rugby, I learned quite a bit! 🤩 3d
kelli7990 I enjoyed this story. I can‘t believe we‘ve read 39 stories together. 3d
Cuilin Loved it. As someone who loves Rugby it may have influenced my feelings about this story. 3d
dabbe @kelli7990 IKR? 🤩 3d
dabbe @Cuilin I'm intrigued to learn more about it! 3d

I think I missed something regarding the poison.

Librarybelle To me, it seemed a little odd that she took the poison. I also wasn‘t 100% sure why they went to the Russian embassy. 1w

CogsOfEncouragement 1 - not sure

2 - Her life was horrible, and she didn't want to have to do time for killing the secretary?

3 - I thought SH and W wanted to provide the evidence to free Alexis from his sentence in the Siberian salt mine as the Mrs. requested.
1w
Daisey I agree with @CogsOfEncouragement that she didn‘t want to be convicted of murder and they went to the embassy to share the proof of evidence. 1w
Cuilin @CogsOfEncouragement @Librarybelle I think the poison was a bit extra but as @Daisey said she didn‘t want to be convicted of murder and therefore sent to prison. 1w
dabbe @Cuilin @CogsOfEncouragement @Librarybelle ... what I don't get is why have poison in the first place? It was proven by Holmes that she did not come there to murder anyone. She didn't bring a murder weapon at all--yet she brings poison? Just in case? How would she know she'd be in a place where she could quickly find a weapon if she needed to? 1w
Librarybelle Good point, @dabbe ! 1w
Cuilin @dabbe exactly!! 1w

It‘s Sherlock so possibly but so much information was gleaned from one object. Thoughts?

Librarybelle You‘re right—possibly Sherlock would have figured it out, but, as the title suggests, the pince nez was the pivotal clue. 1w

CogsOfEncouragement I thought the change in the amount of food being consumed was key. Maybe even someone with 20/20 vision would take the wrong way in trying to leave the house because of the flooring. 1w
Cuilin @CogsOfEncouragement yes, the food was pivotal. He knew the suspect was still in the building. 1w
dabbe Holmes (being Holmes) probably could have put it together without the pince-nez. The footprints and lack thereof on the garden path is another clue as well as the same type of carpeting leading to the garden as well as to Coram's room. The glasses are the cherry on top of the banana split, as the cliche goes. 1w
