And that‘s a wrap! #52Books52Weeks #SetinAustralia

I wasn‘t aware until I finished that this was the last book in this series. It is a slow burn of a book with a couple of mysteries to figure out one a hit and run and one a disappearance. It felt a little flat to me after loving the first two.

So happy to have finished this challenge!

Low pick. Not my usual genre but I needed a #setinAustralia for #52Books23 and wanted to stretch my comfort zone. I guess this is not just a whodunit but a didanyonedoitatall and a whydidithappen. The gradual reveal of convoluted backstory was both frustrating and interesting and I was satisfied with the ending.

Ruthiella I find her later books are stronger than her debut. 1y

Hubby picked up the library holds today, and I figured I should separate mine out before the kiddo dived into the bag. Tagged is for #52Books23 #setinAustralia and the other two are to do some cramming about perimenopause (yay! Plus two more should come in next week). Getting old is not for the faint of heart.

Desha No, it‘s not. I‘ve got the Menopause Manifesto on my TBR as well….ughh! 🤪 1y
Megabooks The menopause manifesto is great!! I actually bought a copy I liked it so much. 1y
ravenlee @Desha @Megabooks I feel like I‘m way behind the curve here. My mom had a hysterectomy in her thirties, my older sister did the same in her mid-forties, so I‘m flying blind and scrambling to figure it all out! 1y
Desha Me too! Just like @Megabooks mentioned I‘ve heard great things about the menopause manifesto so I‘ve got a copy of my own…I think I‘m gonna need help! 😂 1y

Avant-garde artist Evan Trentham, his wife Helena and their daughters live a bohemian life in 1930s Melbourne. They start an art colony, inviting upcoming artists to live and work with them. Narrator Lily is the bff of daughter Eva and lives there too for a while. Through her eyes the story unravels as the community and the family fall apart around her. Decades later she reconnects with this past life.
Thank you for sending me this one Karen🩷

Librarybelle This is on my to read list! I meant to read it a few years ago, bought a copy, and then shelved it…one of these days… 2y
squirrelbrain Sounds like a good read! 2y
LeeRHarry This was a miss for me but I‘m glad you enjoyed it 😊 2y

I enjoyed this novel of deep friendship between young girls and the art world of the 1930s in Australia. I did not feel compelled to pick it up often, but when I did, I enjoyed it. 3 🌟 #52bookclub23 #setinaustralia @LauraReads @KarenUK @britt_brooke @CarolynM @Smarkies @LeeRHarry @Clwojick @BookBelle84 @jennifer80 @Librarybelle @triplem80 @AshleyHoss820 @Read4life @Bluebird @squirrelbrain @BarbaraTheBibliophage @ravenlee @Deblovestoread

Usually, 1950‘s rural Queensland is the stuff of my nightmares, but I was amused and weirdly charmed by this tale of the goings on of a community of pineapple growers on small holdings somewhere in the tropical inland.

LeahBergen I love the cover and I‘m SUPER intrigued by all the oldies behind it! 👀 2y
squirrelbrain I love the cover too! ❤️ 2y
CarolynM @LeahBergen They are from our CJ Dennis collection. He‘s unfashionable these days but we still love him. We have most of the first editions and a few other interesting editions of Songs of a Sentimental Bloke. 2y
LeahBergen I don‘t know CJ Dennis at all! 2y
Rissreads I have 2 pineapples growing in pots! Shouldn‘t be too long before they are ready! Pineapples are my favourite 🍍 2y

I agree with some that this was more of a character study novel, and had less of a sense of the Australian Outback, but it‘s still my favourite Harper novel so far.

I loved meeting all of the characters, they were all so evenly drawn that I didn‘t guess the outcome until it actually happened; both the main storyline and the sub-plot.

Ruthiella Is this the first in a planned trilogy? Or is it is the last Aaron Faulk novel? 🤔 I think her books just keep getting better and better! I‘m very much looking forward to this one. 2y
squirrelbrain It‘s supposedly the last Aaron Falk novel @Ruthiella - and the book does kind of imply that too (no spoilers!). 2y
LeeRHarry Nice review. I think it‘s good that the setting for this book highlights the variety of landscapes here in Australia - most states have their wine countries and I was visualising Victoria‘s Yarra Valley whilst reading this having not been to that area in SA. (edited) 2y
Librarybelle I really enjoyed this one! 2y
Cinfhen This was a favorite for me too @BarbaraBB and you still get the sense of place. I feel like the book left on a cliffhanger setting up another Aaron Faulk story….I hope so 🙏🏻 2y

It was so wonderful to return to Australia and Aaron Falk! This time, Falk is on a vacay of sorts and is reminded of a tragic disappearance the prior year. Yet, as he looks a bit further into things, something just does not quite add up. Leave it to this flawed yet patient and honest guy to try and figure out what actually happened. Don‘t blink, or you‘ll miss the clues.

I‘m so glad I snagged an #ARC through #NetGalley from the publisher.

CoverToCoverGirl Great writer. And she not only writes great characters, she makes Australia come alive and jump of the page(s). 2y

Cinfhen Yay!!! Happy you enjoyed it 🫶🏼 2y
squirrelbrain Glad it‘s fab! I applied for an #arc of this, but didn‘t get it. I shall have to get myself a ‘proper‘ copy! 😁 2y
