No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference
No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference | Greta Thunberg
The history-making, ground-breaking speeches of Greta Thunberg, the young activist who has become the voice of a generation 'Everything needs to change. And it has to start today' In August 2018 a fifteen-year-old Swedish girl, Greta Thunberg, decided not to go to school one day. Her actions ended up sparking a global movement for action against the climate crisis, inspiring millions of pupils to go on strike for our planet, forcing governments to listen, and earning her a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. This book brings you Greta in her own words, for the first time. Collecting her speeches that have made history across Europe, from the UN to mass street protests, No One Is Too Small to Make A Difference is a rallying cry for why we must all wake up and fight to protect the living planet, no matter how powerless we feel. Our future depends upon it.

This book was irritating at first, but towards the end, I realized why it was repetitive.

This is a compilation of Greta‘s speeches from 2018-2020. It is repetitive because she is stating the same facts over and over—but repetition is necessary because of “inaction” like she states. Reading this made me feel hopeful and simultaneously powerless. I hope change on a large scale happens before it‘s too late.

I knew of Thunberg but I had never heard a full speech, so it was nice to have them collected.

I read a speech a day so while it did get a bit repetitive, it's also driving the facts that difference needs to happen and now more than ever. Not only that but to trust the science, believe in the knowledge that they are presenting and to make these changes both locally and globally.

We must listen to Greta, our young people, and climate justice activists. Greta is wise, and so are my students in the Youth Activist Book Club. This was one of their two picks for our summer discussions. It was also my July #BookSpin pick.

A collection of Greta Thunberg‘s speeches from 2018-19. It‘s a short read (75 mins on audio, read by Greta herself), and the speeches are presented without further comment or analysis, so it is a little repetitive.

As always, though, her words are a wake-up call, a call to refocus and do better, to learn, act and hold our politicians to account. It was good to hear her full speeches, and to learn a little more of how this started for her.

This little book contains some highly influential and powerful speeches given by climate change activist Greta Thunberg over the past year. I‘m knocking off a star because if you consider this book as a whole, it‘s quite repetitive, but still a recommended read. 4 stars!

This is a collection of her speeches as promised but it could have used some simple editing to make it more effective. I finished it out of a sense of duty and (like other readers) feel that the title should have better matched the content. I don‘t regret reading it; it just wouldn‘t suit other readers with other expectations or needs.

I ordered this book from #BookDepository for 3 reasons:
1. I was hoping to win the #GoldenBookmark ( I did not)
2. I was hoping to learn how I could make a difference in reversing climate change ( I did not)
3. I could fulfill a prompt for #NonFictionChallenge2020 ( I did, indeed)

Greta is great but this book, NOT SO MUCH. 👇🏽

Crazeedi I hope you are well Cindy. Sending a hug 4y
Cinfhen This is JUST a collection of speeches Greta gave in 2018/19 - they are short & repetitive. It‘s a wake up call to heed the warning ⚠️ but there are no useful suggestions as to what we can do. Nor is there any context to her speeches or scientific information to help understand the direness. #UnpopularOpinion 4y

Lindy I was disappointed with this too. I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by Greta. One speech would have been enough. 4y
Crazeedi @Cinfhen I'm fine, just feeling a bit scattered, my mind is being filled with the world, so my concentration is a bit off. Need the sun and warmth! Have a great day🥰 4y
Cinfhen Thanks @Lindy I felt BAD panning a 15 yr old activist but honestly this book was not worth my $5 4y
Cinfhen I totally understand @Crazeedi surprisingly reading is working as a good distraction for me! Sending hugs and warm wishes your way xx 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa You are really taking on some disappointing reading for this challenge...I owe you an apology, go read something for fun! 4y
Cinfhen Hahaha @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m just picking poor choices!!!! 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Cinfhen Some of it may be the times, I‘m finding nonfiction difficult this week...and my for fun reading has to be distracting or it doesn‘t work. So maybe we are just much tougher critics at the moment.🤷‍♀️ 4y
Hooked_on_books I haven‘t read it yet, but I‘ve heard things about Hope Jahren‘s new book that suggest it might be more like what you seek. 4y

This is a good quick read with an important message. It's a collection of Greta Thunberg's speeches so it's a bit repetitive, but facts like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stating that there needs to be a 50% decrease in carbon emissions by 2030 are worth repeating. She doesn't want politicians and people in a position of power to listen to her, she wants them to listen to scientists and take the radical action that's needed.

Okay, so I think I hyped the book up for something different then I thought it was. As it is written, as a collection of Greta‘s speeches, it‘s exactly that. From September 2018 to September 2019. Just over 100 pages. I was expecting something more along the lines of here‘s what we can do, since no one is too small. But this is what Greta meant for, as she says repeatedly; stop acting like it is okay our house is on fire and do something.

quote
Bookish_Gal

Adults keep saying: ‘we owe it to the young people to give them hope.‘ But I don‘t want your hope. I don‘t want to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if our house is on fire. Because it is.

A lot of people say that Sweden is a small country, that it doesn‘t matter what we do. But I think that if a few girls can get headlines all over the world just by not going to school for a few weeks, imagine what we could do together if we wanted to.

I just feel like I need to focus on this. She sees her autistic Asperger‘s as a gift. I have it, myself. I have trouble some days seeing it as a gift. This opening to her book is already making me, no a young adult, rethink Aspergers and how it affects my day. I‘m still working on not seeing everything black and white, so I kinda hope Greta mentions it in one of her speeches. Either way, I‘m excited to read her speeches the way she intended them.

Read this over the weekend and I think it's a decent read. I think these speeches work better as speeches and feel too repetitive in book format. I also feel like she could use more factual evidence in her work instead of just saying to look at the science. People aren't going to go through the effort (I'm not) and I believe she's got a wide enough audience to make us properly "panic". That said, the subject matter is important so ??

This is a powerful, intense collection of climate activist Greta Thunberg‘s speeches. I listened to this straight through, and though it is repetitive by nature, being a series of speeches, it was moving to hear back to back, especially given most of the speeches are read by Greta herself, in her earnest and furious and urgent young voice. Thank you to Libro.fm for the free listening copy!

This tiny book of teenager Greta Thunberg‘s speeches packs a big punch . . . if only the “adults” in power will listen. We are dangerously close to the point of no return—when there will be no way to sustain life on the planet. I hope everyone will read these speeches and then call their legislators to demand that the greater good be served by drastically changing our destructive ecological behaviors. Listen to the scientists.
