Pickpick

This book was almost continually frustrating because I so wanted things to be different for Tess. She tried hard to do what she felt was right or what she had to do, and it never went her way. After recently finishing Clarissa, I didn‘t think I would soon read another book with a man that made me so angry, but Hardy managed to make me detest multiple male characters. Yet, he wrapped it all up in absolutely beautiful and descriptive writing.

Daisey Thanks again to @BarkingMadRead for leading another great #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade read.

Was feeling low, went to the library, found this while browsing, read twenty pages and instantly felt better.

Part one was one of my favourite books last year. Lovely to be back with the Cazalets. 🩵

batsy I need to read the Cazalet Chronicles! Glad that it helped you to feel a bit better 💜 10mo

I read banned books, and I always want to know why they were banned. There are 2 banned books that stand out to me as the most ridiculous: 1) Junie B. Jones books were challenged/banned because Junie doesn't always do what she's supposed to, and she doesn't use proper grammar. 2) Lord of the Flies was banned at one point because of its violence, and the belief that people needed something lighter to read.
@Linsy #BannedBooksBonanza

Sace Junie B Jones?! What the heck? 6y
Linsy Because she didn‘t do what she was supposed to or use the right grammar?? So kids aren‘t allowed to be kids? I think that might be the most ridiculous thing I‘ve ever heard. 6y
Herschelian Back the bad old days of Apartheid in South Africa the official censors - who were non-English speaking Afrikaners- banned the famous book ‘Black Beauty‘ because they didn‘t know it was about a horse!! Many other books were banned as well. 6y

CoffeeNBooks @RestlessFickleBookHoarder @Linsy I know, right?! It was part of my local library's Banned Books display, so I had to ask them about it. My daughter loved those books when she was younger! 6y
BookNerd9906 Satanic Verses by Salmon Rushdie was not only banned, but lead to a death warrant being issued. He was in hiding for over a decade. #thepowerofbooks 6y
GingerAntics @Linsy @CoffeeNBooks @RestlessFickleBookHoarder we weren‘t allowed to have books that had minors not always doing as they‘re told when I was in high school. You couldn‘t get them in the school library, but you could have them as long as you didn‘t share them with anyone. They thought if we read books like that they‘d have to paddle more kids. That is exactly what I was told when I asked. 6y
CoffeeNBooks @GingerAntics That's crazy! What books were actually available in the library?! Luckily, I work in a district that doesn't ban books, but a neighboring county's superintendant decided a few years ago that nothing would be allowed in the schools in that district that might be considered offensive to someone. 😳 6y
GingerAntics @CoffeeNBooks I honestly don‘t know. My mother rolled her eyes at that and bought me the books I wanted to read. I don‘t remember ever looking at the books they had. I never checked one out. We had very few shelves, honestly. It was mostly quiet study space. 6y
GingerAntics @CoffeeNBooks I came from 2000 miles away and a catholic school to a public school. I was absolutely shocked at how close minded this distraction/community/area was. I was petrified of that place. They made it out like they would gladly beat anyone with a cricket bat on a whim. *shudders* 6y
Sace @GingerAntics *sputters* what? Hunh? I'm speechless. I'm sorry you had that experience! 6y
GingerAntics @RestlessFickleBookHoarder yeah Texas is much different than Minnesota. It was a real shock. The way children and students are viewed in MN is much different than in TX. We‘ve been down here almost 20 years now, and I still can‘t wrap my mind around it. 6y
Sace I feel the same way about AL...and I grew up in FL! 6y
AJones The ban on Junie B. Jones is ridiculous. Now their going to say no to David Shannon‘s picture books too. For goodness sake, they‘re fiction. We need to encourage our population of young readers; especially, in this digital world. They need freedom of choice to some extent. If anything there needs to be more restrictions on television. “To Kill a Mockingbird” was a big controversy in Florida too. 6y
SleepyDragon I don't think it, or anything really, should be banned, but I do have a friend who stopped letting her daughter read Junie B. Jones in 1st grade because it affected her ability to learn proper grammar. She actually backslid and her writing started fo mirror the bad grammar in the book. I don't think that's a common problem, though. 6y

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is my favorite book. I will always remember when I was 12, my grandpa seeing me read it, telling me how much he loved that book and how it was one of his favorites. A story that helped them escape for a while while fighting WWII. I have multiple copies due to the fact that anytime I see one at a booksale I feel the need to give this extraordinary story a home. #sentimental #fallintobooks #thepowerofbooks
