Here I go again with my fan art / quote thingy. I think this is an original 1933 illustration from Alan Lee. My SO has already fallen behind. Still waiting for him to complete #lotrchapteraday #chaptertwo. He's responsible for the next quote, so hmm, I may be late posting. Ha. This chapter is v explanatory, giving lots of backstory to the Ring, Smeagol, and Gandalf's efforts to discover the history. And then there's eavesdropping Sam.
Two sides of the great man dissected. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Poor Harry. He seems so distant here, so aimless and lost.

A second chapter, and still no Harry. I remember reading this the first time being frustrated and yet,how clever to delay our meeting up with him. It shows Rowling thinking about structure and audience, although to be honest, Snape's extended justification of his life's choices here seem unending and obvious. However, Draco's presence in this book is significant and poignant.

This chapter demonstrates just how much control Harry does NOT have... He is completely at the mercy of so many other people (whatever their intentions), his forced circumstances, and the laws of the wizarding world. His attempts to understand and navigate his life, and make good choices, ensure these books are absorbing reading.
