As suspected, I finished last night!

Overall this is a very funny and light-hearted book, although at some points Alan doesn't come across as very nice (this is mainly directed at film editors/critics/journalists, however - not his fellow actors).

It only really gets sad towards the end, where the entries tail off/are shorter, and Rima (his wife) takes over.

Cinfhen I‘ll be curious to know your thoughts on 1y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen so far, it's very funny and not too sad, although there's quite a few swear words! It's not like a traditional memoir (think Born a Crime), but extracts from his diaries so doesn't go into details, although there's footnotes at the end of each chapter. 1y
Cinfhen I‘m going to be listening on audio…wonder how it will work in that medium 😅 I think I might push it up my #TBR - thanks for the reminder xx 1y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen I was a huge Rickman fan so you might want to take my comments with a pinch of salt. I must admit I'm reading it to 'get it out the way' as I know it might make me sad and I'm using it for the #inmemorium prompt. 1y

Summer - A Novel | Edith Wharton

I‘m glad this ended up being the first book I finished during the new year. The characters weren‘t particularly lovable, but that didn‘t put me off. The descriptions of place were so incredible that I had a much more vivid mental picture of this than I sometimes do when reading. And I kept being viscerally transported back to my own youth as I read. The transporting reading experience made this feel very special.

JamieArc You are introducing me to the most beautiful editions 😍😍😍 1y
IndoorDame @JamieArc I do have a weakness for searching out pretty editions of classics to add to my collection 🥰 1y

Cinfhen That cover is JUST GORGEOUS 🥰OMG! 1y
IndoorDame @Cinfhen the artist who did the cover has some very faint black and white versions of her artwork illustrating several pages with pull out quotes. She‘s apparently a huge Wharton fan and her work definitely speaks to the vibe of the novel. 1y

My mother adored Barbara Pym.Decided to see the allure. Did not expect a comedy, with well drawn, contrasting, characters: Jane,41,the scattered, poetry spouting ministers wife, who measured her success( or rather lack thereof) by ministers wives in novels, & Prudence,at 29, younger, urbane, single working woman, London dweller, with multiple love affairs. An unlikely, yet enduring, mutually valuable friendship.Such an enjoyable, read! 😂

Tamra I have yet to read Pym, I need to correct that! 6y

The entrance to the children‘s section of our town library. Such a lovely sculpture, donated by a family in memory of their daughter, a reader, who died at a young age. Often I use this entrance because of its quiet beauty.

LeahBergen It‘s lovely. 6y

Two sides of the great man dissected. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Poor Harry. He seems so distant here, so aimless and lost.

#maybookflowers day 29 - #inmemorium

Just got to the death of Alexander Humboldt, the father of modern nature studies, and at the time of his centennial, one of the most famous men in the world (would that scientists today were so revered).

As most Scotsmen, he could keep everyone enthralled with his tales. I met him twice; he made me a promise the 1st time, upheld it the 2nd. I was stunned when I'd heard he'd passed in 2008, I was to see him that summer.

If you'd like to read about what to visit in Scotland that isn't on the usual tourist sites, he's your man.

Pinched the photo from Google. Wanted a Freedom Walk one, but hey weren't very good.
