I couldn‘t not do a re-read of Jurassic Park for this month‘s #FoodAndLit #Costa Rica

This book is perfect summer reading to me, and it blew my mind the first time I read it in high school. I can even remember playing the music from the movie in high school band.

Now it seems silly that there were ever people who didn‘t know what a velociraptor was or how to use a computer, but it‘s still a wild ride.

Itchyfeetreader I remember reading this borrowed from my dad on a holiday - one of my first not for kids books! 7mo
Bookwormjillk @Itchyfeetreader me too! This, The Firm, Stephen King, and Flowers in the Attic taught me all I need to know 🤣 7mo

This book was a great way to do some armchair traveling & learn about some animals through this veterinarian's experiences. Dr. Evan Antin may look familiar, not just because he looks like Superman, but because he is active on social media, with a goal of educating people about animals and how to help ensure the safety of them and their environments. As a student then a vet, Antin shares some stories from his travels, most of which is through⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick volunteering with rescues & conservation organizations. He is careful to be a good world citizen by adapting to the local culture and teaching locals about the native animals in hopes that education will help protect the lives of animals, many of which are endangered. He isn't the most animated narrator I've listened to, but his passion still comes through as he tells about a variety of animals including whale sharks, rhinos, and binturongs.⬇️ 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick For those participating in #ReadTheWorld #ReadingAsia #ReadingAfrica Evan visits the following countries in this book and it's a delightful way to check a country off your list #Australia #Tanzania #Ecuador #Panama #Costa Rica #Thailand #Cambodia #Indonesia #Fiji #Tahiti #SouthAfrica #Uganda #Philippines #Rwanda #DemocraticRepublicOfCongo #Bahamas and the Barnes & Noble Exclusive edition features a bonus chapter on #Nepal 3y

aperfectmjk Nice choice! 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @sharread What?! Water monitors don't do it for ya?! Honestly, early on I gave him a follow for his good looks, but stayed for the content.

Pageturner1 i will get the book just to have the cover! 😄😛 3y

Cinfhen And dude is HOT🔥🔥🔥🔥 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Pageturner1 @Tera66 @4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen I feel obligated to point out that, like any good memoir, there are a few pictures inside, too! 🤩 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m usually not one for reading about other vets, but this sounds interesting! 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Megabooks If you read it, I'll be curious to hear your thoughts. He isn't going into detail about surgeries on domestic pets, so that's a plus. It felt more like a passionate conservationist's travels than medical diary. 3y

When I heard the British title has 1/2 a death less, it intrigued me even more.

BookishMarginalia Really? I wonder what happened to that half death... you‘d think it would be significant 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y
riversong153 @BookishMarginalia right? It‘s like when you hear stats about families having 2.5 kids 😂 5y
nomadreader Right, @BookishMarginalia and @riversong153 ? When it got shortlisted for the #Costa First Novel Award, I saw the British title and immediately picked it up from the library. Very curious at the significance of the 1/2 death! 5y

zembla I think the American title added ½ a death to differentiate it from a similarly titled book: 5y
nomadreader @christinamcc Oh, my goodness. You're right! And that makes no sense at all. Perhaps I will let this one go. That's stupid. https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2018/sep/13/us-uk-book-titles-change... 5y
zembla @nomadreader Aw, title changes aren't the book/author's fault! I'm enjoying this one, but the nice thing about books is they'll still be around later if they sound good 😊 5y
nomadreader @christinamcc No, because the two titles intrigued me enough to move it up my list, but I'm not loving it so far. If the reason is Evelyn Hugo (one of my favorites!), then the intrigue is gone. 5y
zembla @nomadreader Ah, gotcha! That makes sense. There are way too many books out there to stick with one that's not doing it for you. 📚👀 5y

Review copy: A dark YA novel from the UK with an obsessive loner protagonist that I still empathized with! Nicely done. I had to read to the ending, which I won't spoil but warrants some discussions if you've reached it! #costa
