Something in Disguise | Elizabeth Jane Howard

Pickpick

A gloriously dark tale of an English family. May has remarried the gruff retired colonel Herbert , using her money they buy a monstrous house as his daughter Alice and her 2 children, Elizabeth + Oliver, leave the home. The children's ill-fated love lives are explored with portraits of various characters being caustic + very funny. Men in this book are particularly ridiculous, but it is the ending that allows the writer to wallow in black humour.

LeahBergen It‘s wonderful, isn‘t it?? I‘m currently reading Odd Girl Out and absolutely loving it! 1mo
andrew61 @LeahBergen yes I loved it. I had my suspicions about Herbert when may started to feel unwell but was still shocked at the ending and loved his comeuppance although was sorry about Claude. Also the car incident with John Cole was shocking. The characters and descriptions of domestic life in all its guises was brilliant. Thanks for the recommendation I will definitely read more by her + have After Julius picked up at a charity shop. 1mo
LeahBergen Oh, poor Claude!! I was totally surprised at the car incident, too. After Julius is really good! 1mo

Oh, and I forgot to post my out of control pre-new year book outlet binge #bookhaul.
The sale was too much for me to resist. I need serious help.

Scochrane26 I just said today that I want to do a road in the eastern part of my state to several indie bookstores I haven‘t been to. So, we all have a problem. 3mo
MaleficentBookDragon @Scochrane26 I love that! I‘ve hit a few in the Virginia/DC area since I moved down here and am planning visiting more. 3mo

#12Booksof2024 September

A great reading month, but Claire Kilroy's Soldier Sailor (with a fantastic audio narration by Simone Collins) wins out.

"You thought wolves were extinct in this land? I thought so, too. The sea is not glittering, and the mothers are not serene, and the wolves were never more alive than they are tonight. They are volatile, they are vengeful, and you have summoned them to your door."

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Will have to check this audiobook out. (edited) 3mo
TheKidUpstairs @Andrew65 I tried reading this one in both digital and physical formats and couldn't get into it, but was absolutely enraptured by the audio! 3mo
Andrew65 @TheKidUpstairs Good to know, thanks 😊 3mo

I can‘t believe we‘re already choosing books for 2025! Here are my picks for January.

The first is the latest FM book published, and the title of the second is a slight nod to the Wicked movie coming to theaters soon. 😄👠

I almost bailed 20 pages in. Glad I didn't. Is the prose excessively elaborate? Definitely. But once you settle into the narrative it works. The stories are so uncomfortable and brutal in content that plain language would render them too stark to bear. And the magical realism/SF combo allows for each idea to be followed to its extreme, but it also allows for hope. This book is female pain/love/rage/friendship/vengeance. But never despair.

I can see the value in this book, but at 25% I was still not connecting and decided to give up.
