Soldier Sailor | Claire Kilroy

Not that it will happen, but every soon-to-be father should be required to read sections of this book. A woman explains what her life has become once she has become a mother. Her husband is busy at work and he abdicates all responsibility for the child. The exhaustion, anger, disappointment, loneliness, desperate love and raging anger toward a young child, all of it was perfectly described.

#offtheshelf

Tamra I was lucky, my husband was really great co-parenting both of our children as infants & tots. (Not that he isn‘t now, but that‘s the focus of the novel.) I have serious admiration and at times sympathy for single parents & guardians without a source of support. 1w
Suet624 @Tamra my situation is so varied. Three marriages, children every 7 years with the last two being twins. I was a single mom occasionally. My last husband was very helpful. The others, not so much. Living in a commune with my first child was VERY helpful. 1w
TheBookHippie I agree. A must read. 1w

Tamra @Suet624 I can see any arrangement with multiple responsible adults in a household with small children would be a great fortune! 1w
Suet624 @Tamra it really was the best. 1w
BarbaraBB I loved this book too. That husband though. I can‘t imagine living with and tolerate such a man 1w
Anna40 I think most men, even if they read it, would still not understand. But great review! 7d
Suet624 @Tamra I was thinking about your comment again and it made me wonder why some men are great at understanding the needs of a new mother and others aren‘t. Probably a million reasons but I‘m glad yours was on top of things. 😊 7d
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I know! And I fear it or some variation of it happens more than we like to think. 7d
Suet624 @Anna40 oh my. You might be right. 7d
Tamra @Suet624 we were way older than average and ready so that was part of it and my husband isn‘t thoughtless. 😂 7d
Suet624 @Tamra that‘s a great point about age. That‘s definitely a huge factor. (edited) 7d

5/5 🌟

Beautiful. Funny. Raw. Honest. Primal. Angry. Moving. This book evoked a whirlwind of emotions. It's a powerful and candid account of a first-time mum's journey, exploring her immense love for her child alongside the struggles of motherhood and the loss of self that often accompanies it.

It doesn't sugarcoat the realities of being a parent, and for that, it feels deeply relatable. An amazing book!

Oh, and I forgot to post my out of control pre-new year book outlet binge #bookhaul.
The sale was too much for me to resist. I need serious help.

Scochrane26 I just said today that I want to do a road in the eastern part of my state to several indie bookstores I haven‘t been to. So, we all have a problem. 1mo
MaleficentBookDragon @Scochrane26 I love that! I‘ve hit a few in the Virginia/DC area since I moved down here and am planning visiting more. 1mo

#12Booksof2024 September

A great reading month, but Claire Kilroy's Soldier Sailor (with a fantastic audio narration by Simone Collins) wins out.

"You thought wolves were extinct in this land? I thought so, too. The sea is not glittering, and the mothers are not serene, and the wolves were never more alive than they are tonight. They are volatile, they are vengeful, and you have summoned them to your door."

@Andrew65

Andrew65 Will have to check this audiobook out. (edited) 1mo
TheKidUpstairs @Andrew65 I tried reading this one in both digital and physical formats and couldn't get into it, but was absolutely enraptured by the audio! 1mo
Andrew65 @TheKidUpstairs Good to know, thanks 😊 1mo

I can‘t believe we‘re already choosing books for 2025! Here are my picks for January.

The first is the latest FM book published, and the title of the second is a slight nod to the Wicked movie coming to theaters soon. 😄👠

I almost bailed 20 pages in. Glad I didn't. Is the prose excessively elaborate? Definitely. But once you settle into the narrative it works. The stories are so uncomfortable and brutal in content that plain language would render them too stark to bear. And the magical realism/SF combo allows for each idea to be followed to its extreme, but it also allows for hope. This book is female pain/love/rage/friendship/vengeance. But never despair.
