It Pays to Be Good | Noel Streatfeild
post image

A darker, more cynical version of one of Streatfeild's “shoes“ stories, in which an exceptionally beautiful girl achieves success and adoration without having a spark of human kindness in her soul. The title is a biting commentary on what society values in women. A pick because it's entertaining and has a fascinating “illicit“ relationship in it, but be warned, it's deeply sad.

Something in Disguise | Elizabeth Jane Howard

Pickpick

A gloriously dark tale of an English family. May has remarried the gruff retired colonel Herbert , using her money they buy a monstrous house as his daughter Alice and her 2 children, Elizabeth + Oliver, leave the home. The children's ill-fated love lives are explored with portraits of various characters being caustic + very funny. Men in this book are particularly ridiculous, but it is the ending that allows the writer to wallow in black humour.

LeahBergen It‘s wonderful, isn‘t it?? I‘m currently reading Odd Girl Out and absolutely loving it! 2mo
andrew61 @LeahBergen yes I loved it. I had my suspicions about Herbert when may started to feel unwell but was still shocked at the ending and loved his comeuppance although was sorry about Claude. Also the car incident with John Cole was shocking. The characters and descriptions of domestic life in all its guises was brilliant. Thanks for the recommendation I will definitely read more by her + have After Julius picked up at a charity shop. 2mo
LeahBergen Oh, poor Claude!! I was totally surprised at the car incident, too. After Julius is really good! 2mo

Suet624 I'm so glad you received it. And I absolutely adore the drawings by the artist - he does a lot of animal drawings, but I'm most fond of his nature scenes. 2mo

Not that it will happen, but every soon-to-be father should be required to read sections of this book. A woman explains what her life has become once she has become a mother. Her husband is busy at work and he abdicates all responsibility for the child. The exhaustion, anger, disappointment, loneliness, desperate love and raging anger toward a young child, all of it was perfectly described.

#offtheshelf

Tamra I was lucky, my husband was really great co-parenting both of our children as infants & tots. (Not that he isn‘t now, but that‘s the focus of the novel.) I have serious admiration and at times sympathy for single parents & guardians without a source of support. 2mo
Suet624 @Tamra my situation is so varied. Three marriages, children every 7 years with the last two being twins. I was a single mom occasionally. My last husband was very helpful. The others, not so much. Living in a commune with my first child was VERY helpful. 2mo
TheBookHippie I agree. A must read. 2mo

Tamra @Suet624 I can see any arrangement with multiple responsible adults in a household with small children would be a great fortune! 2mo
Suet624 @Tamra it really was the best. 2mo
BarbaraBB I loved this book too. That husband though. I can‘t imagine living with and tolerate such a man 2mo
Anna40 I think most men, even if they read it, would still not understand. But great review! 2mo
Suet624 @Tamra I was thinking about your comment again and it made me wonder why some men are great at understanding the needs of a new mother and others aren‘t. Probably a million reasons but I‘m glad yours was on top of things. 😊 2mo
Suet624 @BarbaraBB I know! And I fear it or some variation of it happens more than we like to think. 2mo
Suet624 @Anna40 oh my. You might be right. 2mo
Tamra @Suet624 we were way older than average and ready so that was part of it and my husband isn‘t thoughtless. 😂 2mo
Suet624 @Tamra that‘s a great point about age. That‘s definitely a huge factor. (edited) 2mo

Oh, and I forgot to post my out of control pre-new year book outlet binge #bookhaul.
The sale was too much for me to resist. I need serious help.

Scochrane26 I just said today that I want to do a road in the eastern part of my state to several indie bookstores I haven‘t been to. So, we all have a problem. 3mo
MaleficentBookDragon @Scochrane26 I love that! I‘ve hit a few in the Virginia/DC area since I moved down here and am planning visiting more. 3mo

I can‘t believe we‘re already choosing books for 2025! Here are my picks for January.

The first is the latest FM book published, and the title of the second is a slight nod to the Wicked movie coming to theaters soon. 😄👠
