A moving story about a family coming to understand that their child is transgender. A beautiful book about the complexities of parenting. And even though this family has a particular journey with their child, it really translates to all parents who desperately love their children and have the daunting task of guiding them. Kids all face unique challenges that require parents to make decisions when there are no clear and easy answers. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

right now i love/hate the way the chapters end in part II. i‘m here for this! 🤓

Very moving portrayal of a warm and loving family raising a transgender child. It gets into the complexities of gender identity for a child, decisions that must be made, and the emotional impact.. Lots of wonderful characters. Loved the grandma, and the discussions between the parents. At first I thought the narration might be too witty/precious but I ended up really liking the style and it felt more real as the book progressed.

Frankel crafts a story that is by turns politically correct and relevant for all of us. No matter your beliefs, transgender kids are coming out earlier than ever. This novel gives readers a chance to experience the events and feelings around gender identity mostly from the parental perspective, albeit fictitious. Parts were too perfect, but a lot was charming and real. My IRL book group loved it.

I‘m about a fourth of the way through this book and I love it so far. It‘s a large, chaotic, loving family dealing with their fifth son who may have body dysmorphia. Dresses and barrettes are fine at home, but what about kindergarten? (Ironically, I‘m reading this right after “George”, a middle reader about a transgender child, but I tend to read things as they drop into my library cart after being on a massive hold list.)Can‘t wait to read on.

This book takes on difficult, relevant issues and handles them with honestly, sincerity, fiercely and with humor, never shying away from the hard questions. Penn and Rose love their kids fiercely, protectively and with so much care, we as parents should all take note as a baseline for successfully raising children. Oh, a shout out to Mr. Tongo, not their doctor, but the best therapist ever celebrating each obstacle as amazing.

So many issues in parenting are unclear. Life comes at us in shades of gray more often than not. Yes, the novel features a character struggling with gender identity from a young age. However, this book is at its heart about a loving family doing their best. It is also filled with a quirky cast of characters which I just really crave sometimes. 💗

📕 Yes, every couple of years or so.

📗 Lighter reads to break up the heavier stuff helps (graphic novels or Sarah Addison Allen books, for example). It's ok to take a break. Reading should stay fun. 😊 One light read favorite: Garden Spells.

📘 I love when fantasy and realism bleed into each other. Ex: Carry On (Rainbow Rowell) and American Gods [Neil Gaiman).

That‘s what all stories want. They want to get out, get told, get heard. Otherwise, what‘s the point of stories? They want to help little boys go to sleep. They want to help stubborn mamas fall in love with dads. They want to teach people things and make them laugh and cry.

Dear Littens: I'm sorry I've been MIA for a few days. I've been in Washington DC at the Save the Children Action Network Advocacy Summit. Yesterday, we had a good day on the Hill, talking to our legislators about how we can work together to help kids in the US and around the world.

I finished tagged book on 3/31 (Day 1 in DC). I liked, but didn't love, it. Poppy was my favorite character. Overall, book could have been better w/tighter writing.

tracey38 @JoyBlue I'll admit it was a bit terrifying for this introvert, and there was a lot of walking involved. But it was a great experience. 8mo
JoyBlue @tracey38 Yes! I‘m super-introverted myself, so I understand! I knew that being ON for 72 hours was going to be exhausting, so I scheduled myself to be off for 72 hours upon return. Unfortunately, I‘ve used that time (and then some) to do follow-up and catch-up! Sigh. Also, I took a walk Saturday and found I was still sore from running back and forth across the capitol on Tuesday. We must keep up,the good fight! 😉💙 8mo

Such a beautiful story. I‘ve read some reviews that criticize it for sugarcoating but I thought Frankel did a great job of showing the ugly side of what Transgender people have to deal with from ignorant and hateful people. Obviously most people do not have a family who is immediately so supportive, especially at the age she comes out, but hopefully this book will help others understand and be less judgmental.

BarbaraBB I‘ve never heard of this one but since you say so, I think it‘s worth reading? 8mo
Rachel_nyc @BarbaraBB I think you‘d like it! The writing itself is good, not great but the story is really beautiful and timely about a family of 5 boys and the youngest comes out as transgender as a young child. I would have liked for more of it to be from her perspective but since the author is the mother of a trans daughter IRL, it makes sense it‘s primarily in the mom‘s voice. 8mo

This is somewhere between a pick and so-so for me. I really liked the chaos of the Walsh-Adams family, and I think a book dealing with raising a transgender child is a very worthy subject matter. I had a few issues with some of the stereotypes presented here, and the writing style was long and rambling. Still, would recommend. 3.5⭐️
