This was a wonderful short read for today! I‘m very much an introvert and frequently time to myself is my happy place, so I found several aspects of this story very relatable. I also loved some of the things it had to say about happiness and contentment, and I laughed several times over the absurdity.

Tolkien and the Great War: The Threshold of Middle-earth | John Garth

I finished my audio reread a few days ago, but this morning I revisited the postscript to more closely consider Garth‘s discussion of the way writers wrote about WWI and specifically its influence on Tolkien‘s work.

I found this quote from Verlyn Flieger enlightening as it makes such an interesting comparison between a return from war and a return from Faerie.

What a cliffhanger before we start The Return of the King! Tolkien does such an amazing job of making me feel these emotions right alongside Sam. I‘m kind of glad I got so behind so that now I don‘t have to wait long to continue.

JazzFeathers You know? I once read the article of someone saying that Tolkien's structure for LotR is a failure, because of the long lapses between books and the shifting of focus. I actually think this is a strength because we go from one good story to another. 1y

Daisey @JazzFeathers I really think it kind of depends on the person and how they get caught up on the story. There are definitely books with shifting perspective like this where I‘ve just jumped ahead to read a specific storyline and there have been times I‘ve been tempted with this one, but usually I can be patient with Tolkien‘s plan. So, I see the point, although I think his writing is strong enough to make it work. 1y

I‘ve been struggling to find actual reading time lately, although it should be a bit better now that I‘ve finished Clarissa. I read a couple chapters last night and this morning, and I just have the final chapter of The Two Towers left. I always love this discussion between Frodo & Sam about the people in stories that really happened. Nobody goes out planning to be the hero of a story, but the ones that don‘t give up do become those heroes!

One of the many things I love about Tolkien‘s writing is his emphasis on the strength and determination of simple characters that aren‘t seen as heroic by the wider world, or at least not until after their adventures. Bilbo demonstrates so much courage when going to find Smaug all alone, and it‘s acknowledged clearly in the story.

Vansa This is so true. A theme running through Lord of the rings as well- the beating heart of the stories is the incredible courage shown by ordinary people thrown into circumstances completely out of the normal 2y
