From Sand and Ash | Amy Harmon

I had a bit of trouble getting into this book at first. I found it a bit slow to start out, but it eventually picked up and turned into a heartbreaking love story during WW2 in Italy. I really liked how the author wove actual events and people into the fictional tale. Definitely another must-read from Amy Harmon! #LitsyAtoZ #LetterF #LitsyReadingChallenge #LRC13

cmastfalk I'm at 20% and it's not grabbing me - unlike every other Amy Harmon book I've read. 7y
StrayCat13 Yeah...her books usually grab me from the get go too. 7y

An interesting and powerful story.
On the nonfiction side: how horrifying. There will always be more that happened during Ww2 that I will learn about and no matter what it will still shock me. To think that people were okay treating other humans like this is just unfathomable.

Sarahr875 The rest of my review: On the fiction side:I like that Sepetys connects Lina with Joana (Salt to the Sea). Then theres kretsky and the doctor. Showing even in the most evil of places, there are still good people who will do the right thing. Let's be those people. 8y
Hollie I loved this book. I'm hoping to teach a historical fiction class next spring and plan to use it. I think students will really respond to it! 8y
Sarahr875 @Hollie oh they definitely would. Have you read Salt to the Sea? I liked the layout of that book better, and it struck me more than this one did. This was great, but that one was even more amazing. 8y
Hollie @Sarahr875 yes! I couldn't put it down. It felt weird to be reading a book where characters are freezing cold while it was 150 degrees by the pool (perhaps that is a bit of an exaggeration) but I loved it! I did not love her 8y
Sarahr875 @Hollie I have not read that one! And I agree. It felt weird to be in the safety of a warm home with a fully belly while reading. 8y

If you want to read a story devoid of the horrors of what a human being can do to another human being, do not read this book. If you want to read a story about the slave trading in the late 1700's and those who survived and sought their freedom, read this book. #lrc13 #BasedOnHistoricalEvent

This is a case of it's not you, it's me. This book is GREAT for what it is-an account of the Affair of the Poisons, but it is not what I was expecting (a history of the first police chief of Paris and therefore more of a police procedural). There was too much detail of Louis XIV's mistresses and Court Gossip for my taste. Full review on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1938903647?book_show_action=false&from_rev... 👇🏻

DGRachel Thank you to WW Norton and @hollytucker for the ARC. I'm counting this as #letterT for #LitsyAtoZ and as #LRC13 - based on a historical event for the Litsy reading challenge. @jessica @BookishMarginalia 8y
johnnie_cakes I'm enjoying it, but yeah... the sub-title is a little misleading. 8y

saresmoore Yeehaw! I'm impressed by the small feat of compiling this list with all the appropriate hashtags, not to mention all the reading! 8y
lynneamch Wow! So cute, too! I just Finished Lillian. ❤❤❤ 8y
Cinfhen Thanks so much @TrishB @KarenUK @kspenmoll @Lmstraubie @LauraBeth I've been basing my reading choices on the boxes, which is kind of ridiculous but I've read some really good books 😊 (edited) 8y
Cinfhen Appreciate the encouragement @lynneamch @saresmoore @CocoReads I've sort of neglected the other challenges but it's only March so I still have plenty of time 😍💜☺️ 8y
CocoReads @Cinfhen that's what I'm doing. I'm pretty much only focusing on one at a time, if something I read fors more than one, that's fine but I can really only concentrate on one at a time. 8y
Cinfhen Exactly @CocoReads we have 10 months to fill the other challenges and I've found plenty of cross overs!!! 8y
Reviewsbylola Great job 👏👏 8y
LeahBergen Oooo, you're doing good! I should check out how mine is looking (I've been writing the titles down but haven't done my card). 8y

This book was great! It's very well researched #historicalfiction and is written from "Patsy" Jefferson's perspective. I thought the authors did a wonderful job of taking their research and writing about what life in the Jefferson household might have been like. A lot of the story is about the relationship between Sally Hemings and Patsy, which I found fascinating. #womenauthors

5/5 ⭐ I just finished this and decided to use it for my #LRC24 (freezer-worthy horror), for obvious reasons.
Set during the Gwangju uprising of 1980, this novel depicts the atrocities that went down with such gut-punching accurateness, conveying all sorts of emotions. Trigger warning: it is very explicit and, therefore, a tough read; but I highly recommend it. The writing is stunning, perfect. This book also works for #LRC10 and #LRC13! @jessica

ephemeralwaltz This was my first experience with Korean literature 👍👍👍 8y

The only thing I really knew about the Hindenburg before reading this book is that it blew up. Lawhon does an excellent job weaving fact and fiction together to create a possible theory for what happened on that ill-fated flight. I really came to love the characters, all real people on the actual flight. I must remember that Starbucks is not the place to finish a book that will make you cry, which is what happened.

MaryAnn1 I really loved this one, too! 💕 8y
lynneamch So good. She came to visit our Knoxville indie bookstore. She was so charming and I was awed by her almost obsessive research into getting the details just right. 8y
