This one finds Cork O‘Conner traveling to Arizona after his new wife gets a frantic call from her son. What they find are secrets & lies, a porous border where trouble between drug cartels, vigilante border patrol groups & those trying to keep a low profile as they help undocumented immigrants is brewing, & a past that Cork‘s wife would have preferred to forget about. Solid, although not my fav in the series, story & a good read.

Managed to go a week or two without reading a Cork O‘Conner book. I‘m almost caught up on the series so trying to take my time with the last few…

😳 Can one live with revenge or justice, whichever it is?

Entertaining enough of a listen to keep me going. Off to look for the next one in the series, though apparently Eskens doesn‘t refer to it as such.

Yes, the writing is great, setting fantastic, mystery compelling—the seventh Cork O‘Connor book is every bit as good as the first six. Maybe even better. What really makes this one work is learning more about Henry Meloux, Cork‘s spiritual advisor. Henry has never really asked Cork for anything but when he winds up in the hospital, he asks Cork to find the son he never met before it‘s too late. And that‘s just the beginning…Impossible to put down.

Another part of the larger series. The story is deviating from the earlier norm but it was a good one. I enjoyed learning more about some growing characters. It wrapped up well and I will keep on in the series.

While I mostly liked this book, it did get a little repetitive. There was also one instance where Cork didn‘t act quite right given the situation. I found it difficult to believe that neither the sheriff nor Cork‘s enemies noticed it. It could have changed the course of the events if they had. #audiowalk

It was so pretty outside today but still a little chilly. I didn‘t walk as far as I did yesterday so I didn‘t get as far in the book. It‘s weird to read one where Cork‘s kids barely show up. #audiowalk

It‘s been awhile since I‘ve listened to a Cork O‘Connor novel, so this next in the series for me is my new #audiowalk book. I did a lot of walking and driving today, so I‘m almost halfway through already. It‘s nice to be back in Cork‘s world even though we‘re in Arizona for this one instead of Minnesota.

#Mtcookbook Up today, variation on pumpkin pie.

I‘m using one of my vintagy Watkins pie plates I found in a secondhand shop. They are the heavy ceramic types with recipes imprinted on them. I didn‘t know Watkins ever sold pie plates! (Watkins is an old spice company in our region.)

mabell I‘ve never come across one of those plates! We have Watkins around here too. How did the variation turn out?? 1y
SamAnne I have one! Didnt know the history. 1y
LeahBergen We have Watkins in Canada, too. I have one of their old cookbooks that belonged to my grandmother. 1y

janeycanuck What a pretty pie plate! I love Watkins cinnamon, it‘s my go-to. 1y
Tamra @mabell rave reviews from the family, which I‘m not surprised because it‘s richer and spicer than the more traditional recipe. I don‘t have a sweet tooth, but I did have a bite while serving and give it 👍🏾👍🏾. 1y
Tamra @SamAnne which recipe is in yours? I explored the history on their website when I found the pie plates and it was fun. (edited) 1y
Tamra @LeahBergen it‘s amazing how successful the company became given how humble its beginnings! How wonderful you have your grandmother‘s cookbook, those are the best. ❤️ Warm & fuzzy feelings. I keep my eye out for a Watkins cookbook, but no luck yet! 1y
Tamra @janeycanuck Frequently I buy their vanilla. 😋 1y

#Mtcookbook Basically, a variation on Mac & Cheese. 😋 This is common cooking in my house. I look at the leftovers in the fridge and pantry and find a suitable way to use them up. This was very tasty, per the hubby. I made it quite a bit spicer than the recipe directed. 🌶️

mabell That sounds good! 1y
LeahBergen I love a casserole! 1y
Tamra @LeahBergen you might like this book then - it‘s a chunkster with a lot of variety and she doesn‘t use can cream soups. (Not that I‘m above using a can soup when time pressed.) (edited) 1y

Tamra @Bookzombie it was! I wish there were more leftovers. @mabell (edited) 1y
