Bookwormjillk I could have smacked Theresa today 3h
See All 7 Comments
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk in her defense, Emily won‘t tell her anything 🙄 these people need to learn to communicate 3h
kwmg40 I loved Teresa's snide comments about rich people! 😂 2h
mcctrish I mean Theresa isn‘t wrong 35m
Clare-Dragonfly I was really hoping Theresa would ask for an explanation, Emily would give one, and V would go “wait that‘s not accurate!” We only have a few chapters left, guys, get it together! 18m

Bklover No more Auntie! 3w
AllDebooks @mcctrish Euurrgghhh! 3w
Bookwormjillk I was thinking today, what if this book were told from Macaroni‘s point of view? What would he say about Em? 3w
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m intrigued by the flaming lance! But if you‘re a guard literally being paid to walk around outside and someone says “who‘s there,” what kind of response is “a friend”?! 3w

BkClubCare @BarkingMadRead I am here for it 👏 1mo
Ruthiella 😂😂😂 1mo
TheAromaofBooks Still not through this chapter, why is it five million pages long in tiny print?! 😂 1mo
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks we are in hell 🔥 hopefully the next one is short. But is it‘s not, please don‘t tell me. Ignorance is bliss 🤣 1mo
mcctrish We are in hell! I mean shit was going down but it was never ending shit! #hoodwinkedbymacaroni 👎🏻👎🏻 and the aunt is all #suckstobeyou #thisismadness plus we need sandbags #toomanytears 1mo
Bookwormjillk I‘m going to put on my resume that I read this chapter 1mo
Blueberry 🥴😭 1mo
kwmg40 Fortunately, I had a long drive today and managed this chapter with the Librivox audiobook. 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I STARTED READING THIS CHAPTER LAST NIGHT IN BED AND NOW IM HAVING DINNER AND I FINALLY FINISHED IT 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Bookwormjillk 😆😆🤣🤣🤣 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Anyway, Emily is an idiot and nobody knows how to communicate in this book. 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly 🤣🤣🤣 1mo
Bklover Still. Not. Finished. Keep falling asleep. 😵😵‍💫 1mo
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly 💯🎯 1mo
Bookwormjillk @Clare-Dragonfly truth. They just talk in circles. 1mo
eeclayton I have no idea what Catherine Morland liked in this book 🤔 1mo
BarkingMadRead @eeclayton I‘m really hoping it‘s something we haven‘t gotten to yet, because I‘m reallllly wondering how she made it far enough to love it 🤣 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly @eeclayton I‘ve been thinking the same thing. Maybe she had an abridged version 😂 1mo
eeclayton @Clare-Dragonfly That makes sense! Like The Princess Bride, the good parts version! 😂 @BarkingMadRead I certainly hope we'll get to the good parts soon! 1mo
peanutnine If I wasn't listening to the audiobook, I would have thrown the book during this chapter. So long and the gaslighting ugh 😵‍💫😤😡🙄😩 1mo

Clare-Dragonfly Heck yeah, I want to know! 🙋🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Bklover I certainly hope she reads them! Or at least lets us read them!😁😉 1mo
mcctrish @Bklover @Bookwormjillk @Clare-Dragonfly why bring them up if we aren‘t getting to know what‘s in them! Mysterious woman, mysterious papers 🤔 1mo
dabbe Pops also has memories of a woman who is not Emily's mother. And he recognized the name of the person who owned the creepy house/castle/haunt/whatever-the-heck-you-want-to-call-it. Here comes the Gothic! I also vote to add the word “sublime“ to “verdant“ and “verdure“. And am I awful to say that if I see any more scenery, I am going to 🤢? Oh, and great to send Pops on an adventure when the guy can barely walk. #wtf? 1mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe so many mysteries, and yessss sublime is also overused 🤣 1mo

AnnCrystal 👋😍👍💝💝💝. (edited) 2mo
mcctrish This is exactly what I pictured 🤣🤣 considering the really gorgeous descriptions of their natural paradise I think fireflies or lightening bugs would be nicer than glow worms 🤔 Emily‘s uncle and aunt sound like a piece of work 2mo
See All 19 Comments
dabbe @mcctrish I see bad things ahead with this aunt and uncle. He's already planning on redoing their cozy little home! And boasting about the changes to Emily's dad! #wtf 😳 2mo
mcctrish @dabbe the tree clearing concerns me maybe he will die too (edited) 2mo
TheAromaofBooks I totally had that glowworm!! 😂 2mo
Bookwormjillk Yup I had one! 2mo
TheBookHippie My daughter had one! 2mo
ElizaMarie OMG #ThatUncle I can't believe he is talking about clearing out the trees! I had a glowworm! It was ridiculous! Why did we have such weird toys as kids!? 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly Definitely a creeper! He stole her mom‘s necklace! Funny how this book starts with all these long, lingering descriptions but there‘s still a ton of action packed into the first chapter. 2mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly right? Soooooo much happened! The words on my pages are really small, that chapter felt so long! 2mo
BarkingMadRead @ElizaMarie it was giving me sense and sensibility vibes, leave the trees alone! 2mo
CatLass007 Dang! I forgot we were starting this today. But it‘s not too late. What years was the Glow Worm in existence as a toy? Because I don‘t even remember a commercial for it. 2mo
jewright I used my glow worm to read under my blankets when I was supposed to be sleeping when I was a kid. 2mo
Cupcake12 I had one and loved it so much especially when reading at night 2mo
AnishaInkspill 😂 💛 💛 2mo
julieclair That aunt and uncle were too awful to be believed. So rude, self-centered and insensitive. And the mom dies already? And the creeper guy? We are totally set up for lots of action ahead. 2mo
Bklover @CatLass007 My daughter was born in 1986 and she had a pink glow worm. 2mo
CatLass007 @Bklover No, definitely not my generation. I graduated from college in 1985.😂 2mo

mcctrish Keanu is being a bit of a lightweight 2mo
Cuilin These chapters are long, with too much information and it‘s slow. I am enjoying it though. 2mo
rubyslippersreads @Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t think his fiancée is quite gone, though. ? 2mo

rubyslippersreads @mcctrish He is. He‘s lucky to have Mina. 2mo
Bookwormjillk Poor Lucy. Poor Arthur. I do wish some of these people would talk to each other about what they know though. 2mo

The Stepford Wives | Ira Levin

Pickpick

A horrific and comically satiric indictment on conservative attacks on women's liberation, this novella, written in 1972, shows how astounding the “tradwife“ idea still is today--when a woman is on the cusp of (hopefully) becoming our first female president. As much as some want to return to the 1950s and put females back in the kitchen, Levin shows how truly tragic that return would be for us women. Indeed, “we will not go back!“ #election24

IndoorDame I was so young when I read this I‘m not sure it sunk in how relevant it still was to my generation, I‘m almost scared to pick it up again now that we‘re at such a terrifying moment politically 3mo
SamAnne @IndoorDame feel the same way! 3mo
dabbe @IndoorDame @SamAnne I felt emboldened after I read it, and the idea of \“not going back\“ really resonated with me. I read it more as a warning--done in a horrifically funny way as only Levin can do. 3mo

marleed I can‘t believe this election is a statistical tie. 3mo
dabbe @marleed IKR? I\'m like 😳. #wtf 3mo
Kitta @marleed same, as a Canadian living in the US I can only hope for a good outcome because I can‘t vote. It‘s terrifying people still believe in him. 3mo

Ruth | Elizabeth Gaskell
post image
mcctrish What could go wrong? Doc says no to her nursing but then yes but he‘s pulling her out before #bellingshit notices her ( we know how that will go) and finally a brief mention of the name change explained ( property acquired and probably a scam) 4mo
Clare-Dragonfly “Never to meet in this world again?” MRS GASKELL DON‘T DO THIS TO ME. 😱 4mo
See All 21 Comments
Clare-Dragonfly Also, Mr. Davis is such an ass! He says he wants Leonard to be his apprentice (does he have to adopt him for that to happen?) in the worst possible way, and refuses to take no for an answer. Does it not occur to anyone to ask Leonard what he thinks? I‘m sure Ruth would, but now that she has to be all self-sacrificing again, she won‘t have a chance. 4mo
AllDebooks NOOOO! Ruth has just escaped the plague at the hospital, now she's going to look after #Bellingshit 🫣 That's very irresponsible considering she has Leonard to care for. It's also a very Ruth thing to do. 4mo
IndoorDame @AllDebooks I know! She could at least make her mind up about school/apprenticeship/tutoring and and leave explicit instructions about who should take care of Leonard if something happens to her so he doesn‘t end up with #bellingshit especially now that she‘s let the cat out of the bag 4mo
Cuilin I can‘t with this drama!!! I think there‘s a fine line between selflessness and abnegating your own responsibilities. Leonard should come first. 4mo
Ruthiella Ruth is just too much of a martyr to be believed. The sacrifice is not worth it. 4mo
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly Oh, yea, mini-heart stop at these words. 😱 4mo
dabbe @AllDebooks I love that you just turned the word RUTH into an allusion. 🧡🩶🧡 4mo
dabbe @Ruthiella 🎯! 4mo
Bookwormjillk I almost threw my kindle 4mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk If only Ruth could have done more of that (using objects other than Kindles, of course!) 😂 4mo
willaful @Clare-Dragonfly I KNOW!

I admit, I was kind of expecting an infuriating happy ending where #bellingshit has a sickbed conversion and they get married but THIS IS WORSE! (I'm assuming from that phrase. 😭)
4mo
julieclair This is off the rails. Ruth is too good for her own good (and Leonard‘s). 4mo
rubyslippersreads @dabbe @AllDebooks I don‘t think Gaskell chose Ruth‘s name arbitrarily. 🙁 4mo
dabbe @rubyslippersreads I keep hearing in my head, “Whither thou goest, I will go ...“ The name Ruth is a common female name of Hebrew origin that means “friend,“ “friendship,“ or “compassionate friend.“ 😢 4mo
rubyslippersreads @dabbe Plus the word “ruth” means compassion or pity for another, sorrow misery about one's own misdeeds or flaws, sorrow for the misery of another; pity; tenderness. 4mo
dabbe @rubyslippersreads 🎯. That was our Ruth to a tee. 😭 4mo
