pickA fantasy folklore sapphic love story. Set in 1832 on the south shore of NS. About a married selkie and the midwife who delivers her baby. “She held her love in an open hand.” It‘s beautiful. Another great one from @DebinHawaii and #AuldLangSpine @monalyisha

pickThis very simple and charming story is about a girl who is sent back to the islands of her birth to live with her grandparents. She has vague memories of her time there, but one very strong one: her baby brother being swept out to see in his boat-like cradle. She is determined to find out what became of him.
so-soI did not realize that this was a graphic novel until I looked it up after listening to the audiobook That certainly explains why the audiobook was so short. It was also very different hearing a graphic novel as an audiobook compared to other audiobooks. I did find it enjoyable, but probably would have rather enjoyed it more as the graphic novel.

Premise: A queer take on the Selkie Wife legend set in 19th C Nova Scotia
Review: This is a legend ripe for a postmodern retelling, and this works really well. I loved the main character and her found family, and the selkie wife herself more than holds her own in a frightening situation. It‘s not perfect but a great read nonetheless.
The queer subtext in Ostertag's books finally... comes to the surface. Gorgeously illustrated graphic novel about friendship and peer pressure, first love and coming out. Like everyone else, I was dying for an epilogue, but can understand why the author might not have wanted to provide one.

This queer historical retelling of The Selkie Wife manages to combine a sweet sapphic love story while also examining the horrors intrinsic to stealing a selkie‘s skin to get a wife. And the audiobook narrator was the perfect voice for this!
