Well, this is the best historical romance I‘ve ever read. Okay, it‘s the only historical romance I‘ve ever read. I did it for the challenges & I hate-read it from beginning to end. I love the idea of the protagonist—she‘s strong, independent, fiercely dedicated to the cause of eradicating slavery, and very human. The story wrapped up nicely and Alyssa Cole did her research, presenting a fresh perspective. But, as it turns out, I HATE romance.
“She tried not to behave like a spinster in a book. Her sense of humour saved her, she believed. She put up a good fight and fell into only the less obvious traps, but she bothered a little more about her dignity, and her position, than do the majority of married women, and betrayed herself by what Roddy called her ‘little ways‘, by which he meant the trivial comforts, consolations, cups of tea...
I almost forgot to enter your wonderful contest, @erzascarletbookgasm !
I‘ve had a wonderful (if slightly unusual for me) reading year. I gave my reading whims free rein and ended up reading mostly vintage books, classic literature, and “spinster lit” from mid-twentieth century Britain( @batsy will approve of the latter, right? 😆) I pretty much ignored anything that was recently published.🤔
Thanks for the fun contest! 😘

A 1943 novel about two respectable women who "descend into debauchery". One of them dumps her husband for a teenage prostitute and the other, a spinster, takes up with "the basest of men". Sounds titillating, doesn't it? ?

"I suppose an unmarried woman just over thirty who lives alone and has no apparent ties, must expect to find herself invested in or interested in other people's business, and if she is also a clergyman's daughter then one might really say that there is no hope for her." #spinsterlit
This gentle, sly, beguiling book is a must-read. Love how Pym delicately skewers social norms without rancour. #allthesingleladies #JuneBookBugs @RealLifeReading
