Daisey I definitely did not expect time to pass as quickly as it has so far in this book. 1y
Cuilin Shout out to the beautiful writing “On a thyme-scented, bird-hatching morning in May ….. she left home for the second time” 🥰 1y

BarkingMadRead @Cuilin yes! It was so beautiful! I‘m trying not to relax though, I‘m sure it won‘t last 🤣 1y
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead right?! It‘s such pretty writing then you think WAIT WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN?! 1y
TheBookHippie @Cuilin the writing is wonderful. 1y
TheBookHippie I definitely don‘t remember this book well, and that passage of time went quickly! 1y
Cuilin @BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie yes methinks we‘re being lulled into a false sense of serenity. 1y
Bookwormjillk Haha no one let your guard down 1y
Clare-Dragonfly @Daisey Same! I thought the ~loss of virtue~ thing would be the whole plot. I have no idea what else to expect. And I like that! 1y
eeclayton I've just caught up after missing several days (because life happened). It was a lot of sadness in one gulp! 1y
rubyslippersreads @Cuilin @TheBookHippie @eeclayton The writing is beautiful, but nothing says sadness like naming your doomed child “Sorrow.” 😟 (edited) 1y
Bluebird A nice break from the prior barrage of ‘what will happen next to poor Tess‘. Loved the writing, but must admit I got a bit bored…. However that doesn‘t mean I‘m looking forward to the next tragedy that will befall Tess. 🥺 1y
currentlyreadinginCO @Cuilin agreed, love the writing 💕 1y
dabbe I much admire Tess's resolve to move on and find her life. Her parents are completely worthless, and she's been through so much already, but to her, I think she was thinking that anything had to be better than where she was. However, this is Hardy (who writes a lot like Edith Wharton--beautifully!), and things can't end well for Tess--at least now now. I'm still rooting for her, though. Love her as a character. 🧡💜💛 1y
Cuilin @dabbe Agree, her parents are the worst. Tess is quite resilient. 1y

Bookwormjillk I would read a book that was just about what squirrels are doing around the world right now. 1y
Librarybelle It was like it‘s so hot Forster does not have the energy to say more 😂 1y
BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle I‘m kind of impressed that he spent a page and a half just to say it‘s hot 🤣🤣🤣 1y
Librarybelle Right??? 1y
mcctrish Chapter 10: and it was hot…… (edited) 1y
dabbe Hot is right up my Phoenix alley! 🔥 113 yesterday, supposed to be 111 today.

“He's Mr. Green Christmas; he's Mr. Sun. He's Mr. Heat Blister. He's Mr. Hundred and One. (That's all? That ain't nothin'! 🤣) I need the Snow Miser!
1y
willaful @BarkingMadRead That's what we read these old books for. 😁 1y
Bklover It‘s hot and everyone went home. 🔥☀️🔥 1y

Tried something a little different by re-watching the movie, I Am Not Your Negro (text/script from James Baldwin's work & directed by Raoul Peck) or reading the book.
📚
The first time I watched the book, I loved it but wanted to go back and read the text. This experiment allowed me to do that. While also enjoying the imagery of the movie.

Baldwin was an oracle. #thatsall

TheLondonBookworm Agree! I liked the first one though I find this happens a lot on YA- decent beginning, mediocre middle, naff ending 8y
booksandcats13 You did better than me! I could never get through that one 🤣🤣 8y
monkeygirlsmama I think I have this series in my stacks somewhere. 8y
TrishTheBibliophile @TheLondonBookworm I liked the first one too! This one was disappointing though. @bigdamnbookgeek I trudged through the ending *hoping* it would get better. 8y
