I‘ve been a bit obsessed w/ Mary Shelley this fall & was left in awe after reading this book. Stunning artwork on every single page paired w/ expertly woven 1st person verse derived from Mary‘s own works. The imagery along w/ her words are tragically beautiful & evoke strong emotions from the reader. I felt the author truly grasped Mary‘s values & beliefs.

This gothic, eerie tale lived up to all it promised to be. Twins, ghosts, secrets, libraries, and much more. I adored all of the literary references & will be recommending this to others. Beautifully written with a satisfying conclusion. This was the first completed book for the #makemereadit #readathon ! Thanks for the littens who voted for it!!!

The Lightning Thief | Rick Riordan

A fun middle grade novel revolving around Greek Mythology. I enjoyed the story and can easily see why this series is so popular in middle grade fiction. About a boy who discovers he is a demigod (half god/half human). He attends a summer camp and meets other demigod teenagers and goes on his first hero quest to retrieve Zeus's stolen lightning bolt before a great war breaks out amongst the Gods.

The Kitchen House: A Novel | Kathleen Grissom

This story alternates between the perspectives of a slave & a white Irish indentured servant. The novel spans over many years and has a rich array of characters. The author used some beautiful vocabulary and all in all I enjoyed this heart wrenching read!

Caraval | Stephanie Garber

I ❤️ the world of Caraval! I thought the world building was rich & enjoyed the air of mystery the story took on. I like storylines that are more unpredictable & Caraval did not disappoint!

I loved the magical realism, the darker plot twists, & uncertainty of what was true & what was the game. A fun read + page turner for me. Loved all the characters & intrigued to see what the next book will reveal!

Booknerd222 Is it anything like The Night Circus? I've heard nothing but good things about it but I've never picked it up. 6y

This book was eerily creepy and I loved every bit of it! Dark fairy tales, kidnappings, murder, multiple universes. This book had it all. Great world building, and unpredictable I thought even for a “Retelling of Alice in Wonderland,” as others often describe it. I would definitely recommend it, but be warned it does have some dark undertones and I found the first have satisfyingly spooky. 😏

The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate
post image
Pickpick

A wonderful middle grade novel inspired by a true story. Ivan is a silverback gorilla who has spent the majority of his life in an urban mall isolated as the one and only 🦍 . Though he‘s the only gorilla, he does have other friends such as a little girl, a stray dog named Bob, and 🐘 . Told entirely from Ivan‘s perspective, this was a cute, quick read. Nice character development & a lovely story.

Wife If I read this to a 4yr old, would there be anything too scary or too emotional? 6y
TheBookKeepers @wife No I don‘t think so. It‘s written in simple language I think younger kids can digest well and scoots around the issues without being explicitly direct. I would read it to a 4 year old 😊 6y
Erofan My ten-year-old daughter read this book. She loved it! She also liked another book by this author - "Crenshaw"!? 6y
TheBookKeepers Oh awesome, thanks for that info I‘m definitely going to check that book out! My son is 9yo (going on 19! Haha) @Erofan 6y

Beartown: A Novel | Fredrik Backman

Fredrik Backman is one of the most beautiful authors I‘ve encountered. I love his writing style & he does an impeccable job of painting an entire town full of richly developed, layered characters. All in a way that doesn‘t overwhelm the reader allowing the names & personalities to stick with you with ease.

TheBookKeepers It‘s hard to say a lot about this story without revealing the best spoilers. But it centers around a hockey town, is full of beautiful quotes, & is an enjoyable read. A few outcomes were disappointing for me & so I only gave 3 stars. But I can see this being a 5 Star read for other readers! 6y

Circe | Madeline Miller
post image
Pickpick

First off I LOVED her previous novel, Song of Achilles. Circe is completely independent & unique from that. It is drenched in Greek mythology & I could read her retellings all day! I ❤️ that she explains Greek mythology in a way that one w/o prior experience w/ it would understand & enjoy the story entirely. You never feel over your head or out of the loop w/ any references bc they are intertwined in the world building.

Continued in comments...

TheBookKeepers I read another‘s review that described this book as “reflective.” And that was a perfect description to me. The story follows the immortal life of Circe, daughter of Helios (the god of the sun). I was frustrated with her in her youth but grew to love her as she matured w/ time & began to not only find, but embrace herself. #bookreview #thebookkeepers #13inthree 6y

TheBookKeepers @Bronte_Chintz Yes! ❤️❤️❤️ just beautiful! 6y
JSW Slightly hungover from this book and its beautiful skilled writing. 6y
TheBookKeepers @JSW RIGHT! I‘m doing the 13 in 3 readathon but I‘m still whirling from this world & just need to sit with it for a bit before diving into another book! Book hangovers are the best & the worst at the same time!! Haha!! 6y
Tamra I am now afraid to start this one because it‘s so well loved and I‘ve never been into mythology. 🤞🏾🤞🏾 6y
TheBookKeepers @Tamra I never read and enjoyed mythology until reading Madeline Miller‘s works. If you are going to give it a shot, hers are the books to taste! ❤️ 6y
Tamra @TheBookKeepers that is a relief! 6y
MidnightBookGirl I can't wait to read this! The author is coming to the bookstore I work at for an event! 6y
TheBookKeepers @MidnightBookGirl What?!?! So jelly!!!!! 6y
JSW @MidnightBookGirl she‘s coming to my local indie this month and I am sure to be a speechless fangirl. 6y
Reggie @Tamra I think you would like it because it really is a coming of age story enhanced by being a Greek Myth. Coming of age all the way into womanhood. I kind of think it‘s a great feminist novel and there‘s a part in here about being a mother, a single one at that that I really appreciated. The absolute horribleness of motherhood but also knowing she would have done anything for her child. Check it out. Sooo good. 6y
Tamra @Reggie thanks for the push! I did take a leap of faith about a month ago and bought it. 🤞🏾 I have a tendency to buy things and let them linger a long time however. Maybe not with this one. 🙂 6y
