Librarybelle There seems to be a lot of layers of deception, but to be honest, the story was that non-engaging that I didn‘t pay attention to everyone! 😂 Klein is the biggest deceiver, and it appears she even added layers of protection to deceive the other deceivers. 1mo
CogsOfEncouragement True, like a tier cake of liars. Maybe that is actually an interesting plot idea after all, but this needed a rewrite even back then. 1mo
dabbe @Librarybelle @CogsOfEncouragement Agree 💯. I would add that Douglas Maberley‘s manuscript serves as a hidden truth that unravels Klein‘s schemes. If published, it would have let the world know about Klein's machinations. Even Langdale Pike, someone we never meet, deceives all sorts of people with his gossipy knowledge. Deception seems to drive the plot, but Holmes ensures that the bad gal literally pays for it. 1mo

CatLass007 Bad people are treated badly and when bad things happen to bad people, it‘s what they deserve. As Hettie said on NCIS:LA, “Haters gonna hate.” (edited) 1mo
Read4life I read “Haters gonna hate” & now TS Shake It Off is stuck in my head. At 3:30 AM!! The brain will not be quieting down now. 😆 1mo
CatLass007 @Read4life 🙀 Sorry. It‘s not a song I‘ve heard so it‘s not stuck in my head. But I have a migraine, if it makes you feel any better. That‘s why I‘m awake. It‘s definitely not helping me to look at my phone either. But I‘m listening to a book with a 30-minute sleep timer and I have to keep looking to play the next 30. 1mo

Read4life @CatLass007 migraine is why I‘m still up too. Hope yours eases up soon. I was just able to take some meds so I‘m going to try and get settled enough to sleep. 🤞🏻 (edited) 1mo
CatLass007 @Read4life Dang! I‘m sorry. I took my prescription med about 1.5 hours ago. I‘m not getting the relief I need, so I capable another. I‘m chalking it up to the weather. 1mo
Librarybelle Hope you both feel better now, @CatLass007 @Read4life ! Migraines are horrible. We also see Holmes‘s idea of justice—basically have Klein give the money for Maberley to go on a trip around the world. Never mind that Maberley‘s son is dead. Time doesn‘t heal all wounds… 1mo
CogsOfEncouragement I think this ending is complete rubbish. 1mo

Sorry about your migraines! Hope you're both feeling better today.

I think Holmes treats Mrs. Maberley with sympathy, recognizing her vulnerability as a widow. In contrast, he manipulates Isadora Klein into paying a steep price for her attempted coercion. This shows that Holmes believes justice should be flexible—protective of the innocent but unyielding toward the corrupt.

CatLass007 @dabbe I agree with your assessment, mostly. Except that Holmes will allow this woman to keep her “good name” and marry a younger, titled man, probably ruining his life and the lives of everyone around him. He might have considered doing more. But I think that‘s just another of the many reasons I didn‘t like this story. 1mo
dabbe @CatLass007 Good point. I think I associated this titled man in this story with the foppish King of Bohemia in “A Scandal in Bohemia“, so I thought nothing of what the male might have to endure. The patriarchal world is bad enough as it is. 😉 1mo
CatLass007 True. I enjoy a lot of the retellings from a woman‘s perspective that I‘ve read. I‘m just about to begin The Change by Kirsten Miller. Maybe if Isadora Klein treated other women well, I‘d have a different perspective about her. But she didn‘t trust anyone she couldn‘t buy, manipulate, or threaten, male or female. But this whole story was awful. 1mo

CatLass007 Nope. 1mo
Read4life I‘m with @CatLass007 Nope! 👎🏻 1mo
Librarybelle Other than this was typical attitudes for that time…nope. This one was pretty bad with its ethnical epithets. 1mo
CogsOfEncouragement No, it was so very bad. The only thing I was remotely entertained by in this story was imagining his dandy outfit. I loved it. 1mo

🎯🎯🎯! In a weird way, Holmes reminded me of the older Atticus Finch in GO SET A WATCHMAN, a book that should have NEVER been published (again IMHO). The older Atticus shows quite a bit of racism and in an acidic way--just like Holmes in this story. To me, the writing was most shocking. Some critics actually wonder if this was even written by Doyle!

CatLass007 Here again, the reader is left completely in the dark about who people are and why things are happening. I didn‘t enjoy this story at all. (edited) 1mo
Read4life Definitely not on my list of favorites. 1mo
kelli7990 It‘s 3 AM over here and I just finished reading this story. I didn‘t really like this story that much but at least it was short. 1mo

Librarybelle I was very underwhelmed. Not a favorite of mine, and I agree with @CatLass007 that there are way too many elements we have no clue about throughout the story. Not a good setup. 1mo
CogsOfEncouragement I hate to say this, but if this was somehow the first SH story I ever read I wouldn‘t be compelled to read another. 1mo
dabbe @CatLass007 @Read4life @kelli7990 @Librarybelle @CogsOfEncouragement I couldn't agree more. I felt like it was a snarkier “A Scandal in Bohemia“. I also despised how Dixie was treated by H&W. And you're so right, @CogsOfEncouragement: if this had been the first story ... 😳! So far, I'm thinking that Doyle should have ended with “His Last Bow.“ 1mo
eeclayton While I agree with the previous comments, I found the part about buying the house with everything in it kind of interesting. It kept me guessing about what might be found in the man's suitcases. (The fact that it was a manuscript was rather underwhelming, though.) Considering that Isadora inteded to deal with the problem in a legal way if possible, she gave up on buying the house way too easily. 1mo
dabbe @eeclayton Excellent point about Isadora giving up too easily. It seemed she wanted to hone right in on the nasty stuff! 1mo
