2.5/5⭐ This anthology of Yiddish stories translated into English is important from a cultural/religious standpoint. I can see it being used with great effect in a Jewish studies course. The editor did an excellent job organizing the stories and introducing each section with contextual information. However, the storytelling styles are very different from what I'm used to, often going on tangents and tedious to get through. #roll100

#2023Book2
The actual plot was good, but the female characters were given almost nothing to do. They were just there for the men to boss around and complain about.

So, this was interesting. This came up on my Scrib‘d app as something I might be interested in, so I gave it a go. The cover led me to believe it would be something akin to Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, but it wasn‘t. Instead, this collects stories and folktales from the Jewish community. There were a couple stories that I didn‘t like, but overall it was an interesting read. ☺️

I finished my #bookspin today. The inspiration for Fiddler on the Roof, I found the Tevye stories better than those that surrounded them. And I didn‘t discover until I was at the end that there was a glossary for the Yiddish words, but most you can pick up from context. Not a five star read, but I‘m not sorry I persevered. @TheAromaofBooks

EvieBee What a fab find! It was on TCM not too long ago and I had to watch it, of course. It always makes me so sad. 2y

The Family Moskat: A Novel | Isaac Bashevis Singer, A. H. Gross

I was drawn into this novel almost against my better judgement, because I don't like family sagas normally. But after reading Hadley Freeman's House of Glass I was curious about traditional Jewish family life between the wars in Europe. I learned a lot! But the continuing family dramas and fireworks started to give me bad dreams, so I bailed out.

Ah, the joy of a Monday morning Google rabbit hole.... Today's prompt #poor immediately put "If I Were a Rich Man" from Fiddler on repeat in my head. Watching a couple versions led to the monologues and stories of Sholem Aleichem which were the source material. Here's a link to If I Were Rothschild, one inspiration for Rich Man: https://yiddishkayt.org/if-i-were-rothschild/

Andrea313 Did your rabbit hole take you to footage from National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene's production in Yiddish? It was incredible! 3y
TheKidUpstairs @Andrea313 I've heard about the production, but never seen any footage! 3y
