A Darker Shade of Magic
A Darker Shade of Magic | V.E Schwab
Most people only know one London; but what if there were several? Kell is one of the last Travelersmagicians with a rare ability to travel between parallel Londons. Theres Grey London, dirty and crowded and without magic, home to the mad king George III. Theres Red London, where life and magic are revered. Then, White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. But once upon a time, there was Black London...

this book was a bit more of a slow burn than I expected but the payoff is pretty good and I absolutely love the setting and magic concepts ? that being said, I'm not a fan of the "knocking out an antagonist but not killing them so they end up coming back later" trope used at a certain point and some of the inklings of instalove ? I'm also not really attached to Kell but Lila? she's amazing and I love her.

#fantasy

ShyBookOwl I just read this too. I really liked it! Lila kind of reminded me of Arya Stark and I love them both. I actually didn't get the instalove feel 🤷🏽‍♀️ maybe I blocked it out since I SO dislike that trope lol 4d
uwak @ShyBookOwl it's pretty minor, just a couple of kisses and some teasing from side characters but still 😑 Lila strikes me as the type who'd be married to adventure given the option 😄 3d
ShyBookOwl @uwak Haha I agree 3d

This book had been on my TBR for a long time now, and I'm glad that I finally got to it. The worlds were so imaginative and the characters were delightful and fun to read about. I don't know what the sequels have in store, but I am very excited to start them!

I liked the idea of the four Londons, and I was certainly interested in the story. But I felt that it didn‘t have enough character development and that the pacing was off (all bad catastrophic stuff ALL the time). I liked the writing, though, and I‘ll probably read more Schwab in the future.

I really enjoyed the world they created but I think I needed more action in the storyline. The writing didn‘t really connect me to the characters.

I really liked this @Avanders , and I used your bookmark with it, because it felt like a perfect match.

I thought this was YA, but I‘m not sure after reading it... anyone know how it‘s usually classified?

Anyway, I thought it had a bit of a slow start, but once I got through the world building part the story was great. I‘ll definitely continue the series. ❤️

valeriegeary I think this is adult fantasy. If I'm remembering correctly she uses V.E. for her adult fiction and Victoria for her YA/middle grade books. 🤗 3mo

Hi #AuthorAMonth folks! September must be a busy month for us all, as only 2 folks have posted reviews! 😱 If you have read a VE Schwab this month and posted your review, please check your post to be sure you used the hashtag and tagged me so I can record it on my spreadsheet.

October will be Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, put in your Library hold now 😊.

(Fan art found on Pinterest, artist not listed.)

ValerieAndBooks I am still waiting for the ebook hold to come in for this (edit: for Vicious) — I just couldn‘t touch the poor-condition print copy from the library anymore. I tried getting into the first of her Shades of Magic trilogy, but couldn‘t. Ebook hold just came in for this one 👉 and maybe it will do it for me for this month 🤞 (edited) 3mo

1) London, UK - not a unique choice 😶
2) overcast and humid morning - it's 8.15am
3) with a phycisist who only talked about his lab work, was sitting straight as a board in a pub and had no sense of humour
4) two kids, two cats
5) impatiently waiting for Friday to roll around the world. 😁

I know I was late to the party on this series, but I read it this summer and absolutely ❤️ it!

Kell & Lila & Rhy & Alucard & the alternate London captured me completely. I raced through the series, reading each book as quickly as possible. This is the kind of fantasy I fall for over and over again. Compulsive, immersive, inventive with characters who capture your imagination and make you wish you lived in their world. A new favorite🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

3.75⭐ This book has so much potential, but was blandly executed. The author claims this is not a YA novel, yet nothing about it is more mature, complex, or dark than a typical YA fantasy novel. All PG-13 action and easy prose. The plot is good but not great, & the characters a tad underdeveloped & predictable (though likeable enough to root for them). I'm curious to see how the series ends, but I'm not dying to pick up the sequel anytime soon.

I finished this book this morning and it was phenomenal! This was my very first V.E.Schwab book I‘ve read so far,I absolutely adored it so much,I loved learning about the different London‘s,also Kell and Lila were just adorable? I must say! I can‘t wait to see more of Rhy in the second book I‘ll just love him! 💕Overall I totally recommend this book to the moon and back!

I had high hopes for this. The plot has potential but it fell flat. I felt indifferent to the characters, no matter how much I tried, couldn‘t like any of them. Lila felt like the typical badass girl that has become popular in fantasy. Kell was boring. Every other character was one-dimensional. As much as this book talks about the four Londons there‘s really no other explanation to them or differences aside from how magic is used in each.

bg_reads This is exactly how I am feeling about this right now! I was kind of chewed out on Instagram for saying it wasn't my cup of tea... I'm not sure I want to keep going! 😨 4mo
eloreads @bg_reads Oh no! I‘m sorry that happened to you. I‘ll never understand why people do that, people have different opinions, we don‘t have to like the same things! I‘m not sure if I want to continue either. 4mo
