"Beware the bullet with your name on it."

The fab 4 are back and this time they have 2 mysteries to untangle - one in the past and the other yet to happen! The plot is entertaining and riveting with some new characters melding in smoothly. The readers get to spend more time inside the heads of each character. The series is getting wittier and more engaging with each new book! Can't wait to read the next ☺️

I have never been one to set any NY goals let alone a bookish goal! But this yr, for the first time, I've decided to spice things up a bit. Let's see how I go 🤞
Goal1: Read more short stories
Goal2: Read more suspense/mystery books from the 60s, 70s & 80s. (expect more reviews & reccos)

Happy new year my lovely littens! Here's to another year of wholesome reading, crushing stereotypes, unadulterated happiness, work-life balance & great health !

Quick read with an overly simplistic writing and mediocre plot twists. Penny was an ambitious & intriguing character but I'm not sure if I'll be reading more of her adventures.
Even though the book is a rich tribute to the golden era of mystery & suspense novels, the events of the story seemed very predictable and flat. There were pockets of the plot that was interesting to read and felt like a warm snuggle but overall it was a so-so for me!

This touching, funny & heartwarming novel is a celebration of life & life's infinite possibilities. It's a staggering reminder that the very trajectory of life can be determined by a single event.

The story is painfully predictable & I just couldn't relate or empathise with Nora. In general, getting invested was a major issue for me as Nora's character felt counter-productive. Don't hate it but can't also name anything I liked.

The Good Sister: A Novel | Sally Hepworth

Hepworth does it again! Dark, quirky, exciting and addictive - this book is a celebration of relationships, especially that of sisterhood in all its glory. The story progresses in multiple PoVs and part of it might seem predictable but then again there's a secret twist thrown at the reader with everything coming together at the end.
The booklover in me particularly loved chapters about Fern's life at the library 😇😇.

On to the next random book !

Sparkling Cyanide | Agatha Christie
post image
Pickpick

"6 people sit down to dinner, 1 with death"

Sparkling Cyanide is a classic whodunnit that is quick, entertaining, puzzling and enjoyable! With a small suspect pool of just 5 people, the in-depth characterisation of their psyche, making up the first part of the novel, was very cleverly constructed. Everybody had motive & the means to do it, so it is rather refreshing that the story mostly focussed on "who did it" than the usual "why".

Story of a girl set in the timeline of the development of the OED, this plot touches upon some of the most significant events of history - the suffrage mvmt, 'men' debating the 'worthiness' of a word to qualify inclusion in OED, gut-wrenching effects of war on families, all the 'normalized' prejudices women had to deal.
One of the most wonderful books I have ever read! Commendable debut & will definitely look forwards to more.

9 troubled souls.
10 days of cleanse.
A lifetime of changes.

Readers either love or hate this book, there's just no middle ground. An eccentric motley of characters that I felt were lukewarm & lacked an all-roundedness. Eventhough the plot never slowed down & ploughed ahead in unexpected directions, the book never got anywhere solid & THAT was my problem with it.
If this is your next-on-list, I recommend you to try one of her other books first.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I was iffy on getting this one. I‘ve only liked 2 of her books 🤷‍♀️ 3y

In the outbacks, festered a fungus,
Unsupervised, rampage became rambunctious.
Until cold storage made it numbly toungeless.
30 yrs & global warming has fed it's ample vengeance.
A fast, taut SciFi with multiple POVs, the plot holds no stray details that derails the setting.Koepp keeps the reader fully engaged with believable and engaging characters with occasional sprinkles of humour. Eventhough the ending is a cliche, it still gets my upvote !!

First of all, hats off to that incredible cover! Had me hooked right away. This is one kindle recco I don't regret.
Mystery taking place in a fantasy island with a mythological aura, the writing is short, crisp & easy with intriguing characters. It's surprisingly unpredictable and will appeal to most readers. Not bowled over, yet still a laudable debut !

Just like her previous book 'The Widow', Fiona Barton brings the 4 protagonists together using an invisible thread of cause and effect introspection. The chapters are short and the story moves forward by passing the narrative baton between each of these characters.
With a superb emotional storyline, this is a top notch book for mystery and family drama lovers.

Dialogues of the Dead | Reginald Hill
post image
Pickpick

A string of random murders.
"Dialogues" from a Wordman claiming responsibility.
Dalziel & Pascoe at their witty best.

A plot themed entirely on clever and delicious wordplay. Although long, Hill weaves a deviously twisted storyline that never slows down till the end making it worthwhile. Smoke and mirrors aplenty, with every chaos melting into one meaningful climax. Most underappreciated classic from a class A wordsmith.

The Ruin | Dervla McTiernan

Nervy, haunting & gripping, the plot is strengthened by the alternating male and female narrations with the author giving the character jus the right dab of depth. Scrubbed with the right dose of perfection and flaws to make him redolent, determined and caring, Det Cormac Reilly is a great character to sink one's teeth into.
If you are looking for an utterly compelling & a standout crime thriller read, pick up The Rúin from your local bookstore.

This book is a painting frozen in time. From the forensic science to the profiling technology, from the dial-up connection to the usage of computers without hard drives and all the events of male chauvinism - this book is a classic reminder of an era gone by. Cornwell has done an amazing job of choosing to tell this story through the pov of a strongly feminist yet extremely believable character, Dr.Kay Scarpetta.
Note: Gory violence vividly worded

"An inadvertent wife fiercely guarding her husband's secret. A socially phobic wife with her marriage in turmoil. A mother dead set on finding her daughter's murderer. And now their lives converge !"

Even though the plot is witty, biting, clever and interspersed with events evoking some worthwhile introspection, I couldn't help the feeling that some of the chapters were dragged out. Nevertheless an engrossing read.

"Eight classic murders. A crime obsessed book nerd. A psychopath on a killing spree."
??
Dark and pyramided, this twisty thriller has a clever plot expertly guided by strong writing. Although the book misses the "glued from first page" effect, the tension in the plot is enough to keep you going at it. Malcolm Kershaw won me over and he felt like someone I could befriend. No wonder Peter Swanson is an auto buy for me!!

What sets the plot apart from conventional thrillers, is this cold perpetual feeling of grief and hopelessness hidden behind every word. The story is not about the big reveal or the excitement building up to it, but about how each of us are driven by emotions. A solid character study in the form of spunky Eve, Engel has delivered an amazing and perceptive story that is sure to leave a mark..!

A fictionally concocted love story between a teenage Vanessa & her 40 smthg teacher which in reality is nothing but abusive & predatory in nature. The story is about her adult self reckoning and subsequently convincing herself the true nature of their relationship. Harrowing and gut wrenching, this book is a raw reminder of what goes inside the victim's head and to spend 300+ pages in there, will leave the readers sore and angry at.....everything?

I'm going to start with the obvious highlight of the book - the reverse chronology of events. The narration cruises through short chapters, each jumping back an hour or two in time. The book starts with the kidnapper getting to the mother & builds back to the days before where the premise is set.In the world of thriller-writing,this has to be one of the most difficult themes to both convincingly write and read. Deaver has pulled it off successfully!

Peter Swanson‘s protagonists in this cracking novel have a knack of deciding who should be the one going down & for what kind of daily crimes they tend to commit. The story progresses through bursts of flashbacks of each character & we can‘t really help but wonder if it‘s our circumstances that truly shape our most deep-seated fears and engraved patterns of thought and behaviour.Classy and stiletto sharp read for a winter's night.

The book was powerful in its course of narration for it definitely made me change my mind about who really was guilty and made me emotionally turbid as I kept shifting between waves of sympathy, anger and hatred for the couple. It's a worthy read and yet I would have loved to have a more solid closure to the chain of emotions unleashed by the author.

Moran spins a wonderful historical fiction by cleverly choosing the less popular sister to tell the life & story of her dominating & selfish sibling, also the Pharaoh of Egypt.Nefertiti & her husband unleash a tempestuous period of change on the otherwise risk averse Egypt, thereby earning wrath of powerful allies. What follows is political drama detailing the majestic rise & pulverising fall of an Empire, culminating in the wipeout of a city.

Picked this one last week, on a whim & have to admit the storyline made me experience a range of emotions after a really long time.

An intricate & unconventional spin on classic child kidnapping with a splash of cult & knots of ss..snakes.
I particularly loved the portrayal of the myriad personalities residing within a single person. All in all, people & this world are in an agathokakological chaos & the synergy balance is precariously delicate.

Mesmeric one time read for a cold Friday evening ! Loved the raw portrayal of emotions springing right out of the character's heads.

Rated it a so/so as the character development is not captivating enough for a thriller and a lot of psychological aspects have been left unexplored. All this could have been forgiven had the ending been shocking enough!

The plot is psychologically tense & spine-chilling & revolves around the detective as the main character rather than a mere point-of-view perspective, which is quite clever. The questions WHO & WHY keep circling back & forth in your head as each episode in the novel slowly gives way for a more convoluted event.Fortunately, the WHO is unravelled only towards the end of the novel accompanied by sub-plots building up to it.
