Bella disappeared one day while playing in her front yard. Jean Taylor is the wife of the man suspected of taking Bella. The story is mostly told from her perspective, but also from Bella‘s mother, the lead cop and Glen, the suspect. Interesting how the author reveals different facts this way.

Some people might be turned off by the seemingly dense main character of this story, but I found that it left me doubting *just* enough to keep me guessing, or rather, second-guessing myself.

I wish this book came with a warning. I had NO idea most of it would be centered around child abuse, and how a toddler went missing. If I knew, I wouldn‘t have picked it up. It‘s not graphic, but still just makes me sick reading.
I felt the story moved really slow too, and we all knew who did it. Wasn‘t really a mystery. I think I‘m going to skip her other books.

I am a day late for #novelnovember but I finished The Widow , it was a mystery, thriller with different perspectives every chapter to give you an understanding of what each character was thinking.
I am almost halfway on The girl who Wrote in Silk , didn‘t hit my goal but a solid week of reading, and a visit to meet our new granddaughter😄

Andrew65 I love the Widow. Well done 👏👏👏 4y

I loved the narrators for this audiobook, and they really helped me get into the mind of each character!

It all starts when little Bella goes missing, and Jean Taylor‘s husband is accused of taking her. Now, she is a widow, but what exactly happened to her husband? And who did take Bella?

Definitely a mystery, and if nothing else, worth a listen with the audiobook. I did see this ending coming from very early on, but I couldn‘t stop listening!

jennbee I don‘t usually go for audiobooks, but this definitely sounds like it would be great to listen to! 4y

A heart wrenching story about love and loss, with some psychotic twists. A little slow at moments but overall a great novel. Loved how the narrator changed from chapter to chapter. Solid 7.5/10 pick

This book was a slow burn - building up to the reveal by looking at the perspectives of the police detective, a newspaper reporter, and the widow. It is definitely more about character development than action. I found it interesting and look forward to reading The Child and The Suspect.

I probably woildn't have started this book if I'd realized it was about a missing toddler and her suspected murderer. Although iit was never graphic in the slightest, it still left me pretty queasy. The story worked fairly well as a psychological study, but it wasn't particularly suspenseful and ultimately just not my cup of tea.

Can someone just tell me how this one ends because I want to know the "big reveal" but I'm just not interested in doing the work to get there. Just over 50% in and I feel like I've been reading this for weeks.

#bookspinbingo #JubilantJuly
@Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks

KatieDid927 From what I remember there really isn‘t much of a big reveal. Others can correct me if I‘m wrong, it‘s been a few years. Her husband did what everyone thought he did which was obvious, to me. 4y
Andrew65 Oh no! 😔 4y
TheAromaofBooks Sorry this one didn't work for you!! It's been so long since I read it that I can't remember exactly how it comes out, but I do remember being not-surprised. The husband definitely was the guilty one, but I can't remember if there were any more details/items of interest. Be like me - skip to the end & read the last few chapters... I frequently do that when I am OVER a book & need to move on!!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks PS As far as I'm concerned, bails totally “count“ for checking off a box on your bingo board since it still gets the book off the list, so great progress nonetheless!!! 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ WOW this was an extremely well written thriller. I did not know that the story was centered around a crime against a child and focused on pedophiles because the description reveals nothing. But the book was written so well that it didn‘t get overly graphic but yet still gave you this feeling of dread and sickness. I think that shows how well Barton writes that she doesn‘t need to be graphic to tell a rough story. Book One #bookspin

TheAromaofBooks Great review! I really enjoyed this one and also thought she did a great job handling some tough topics without exploiting them for the sake of the story. There are two more books in this series now that I didn't enjoy quite as much but were still pretty good reads. 4y
mollyrotondo @TheAromaofBooks yeah I was turned off when I discovered the nature of the crime but the story ended up being written so well that I‘m glad I stuck with it. I want to read her next book, The Child. Is wasn‘t as good though? 4y
TheAromaofBooks Part of it is just personal preference. I found both books to be definitely worth reading. The Child is good, but a little less urgent (?? Not sure what word to use lol) than The Widow. The Suspect has much better pacing and had me racing through the pages, but it kind of ends up being a sad story so it was hard for me to really love it. But I would totally read them if you enjoyed this one - they both have a lot to offer & they were still picks. 4y

The book was powerful in its course of narration for it definitely made me change my mind about who really was guilty and made me emotionally turbid as I kept shifting between waves of sympathy, anger and hatred for the couple. It's a worthy read and yet I would have loved to have a more solid closure to the chain of emotions unleashed by the author.

The book flips back and forth in time and switches viewpoints (between Jean, Kate, a detective, and a couple of other viewpoints). But, it‘s mostly easy to follow as each chapter is headed with whose POV it is and the date. Of course, as the book continues, we learn what those terrible things Glen might have done were. With short chapters, it kept me wanting to read. I did think the ending was a bit abrupt, though.

I really loved this. The different POVs, the jumps in time, the payoff at the end was a little anticlimactic. The character of the widow is such a tough person to empathize with, but somehow you do because of the emotional abuse she herself was under. #57 #2019

I tossed up between a pick and a so-so for this one. The characters weren‘t particularly likable and the subject matter of a missing child and pornography was hard to read but ultimately it did keep me picking it up at every opportunity and the writing was skillful so a pick won out. It is told through several perspectives and time frames which made it interesting and I will definitely read the next in the series.

Wow, the book itself advertises that it's a thriller. Which I didn't think it was at all. The widows husband kidnaps some child, kills her and lies about it, til one day he admits it to his wife.
The book wasn't bad, but a thriller? I didn't think so.

I wasn't sure how I was going to go with this book given what the husband was accused of but I quite enjoyed it. I liked that it was told from several characters point of view and that it covered how Jean felt then and now. I listened to this and there was an interesting interview between the author and narrator at the end. Looking forward to reading the next one in the series, the series is about Kate the reporter.

A dark and gloomy tale for a dark and gloomy day. The Widow isn‘t anything earth-shattering but it‘s a very readable, intriguing mystery that had me flip flopping in my head to nearly the end. Told from multiple POV and both forwards and backwards in time making it structurally interesting.

Finished this for Thursday's book club. This book is NOT like Gone Girl or Girl on a Train - it's more like "the person napping next to the girl on the train". Very boring. You learn all the info you need to know in ch 1-2 and then nothing happens. It wasn't suspenseful/thrilling. Misleading cover. Competent enough writing but a total snoozefest. A Jodi Picoult-esque treatment would work better, but pedophilia doesn't offer nuanced debate. 1 ?

I wouldn‘t call this book a thriller. It was more of a drawn out explanation of how a crime was committed. It wasn‘t necessarily boring but I don‘t think much happened in the book. I thought it was ok. Planning to continue the Kate Waters series, though. The third book was just released this year.

If you‘re really into character-driven suspense and don‘t mind implied child sex abuse, this may be for you. The former was fairly well done, although the MC becomes less sympathetic as the story moves on. The latter just became a bit much for me - nothing graphic at all, just distressing and depressing - and I made it through to the end only as it was my only audio option in a long car trip.
