I am having trouble getting into this one. Does it get better?

Lcsmcat It‘s not her best, but it‘s better than Truly Madly Guilty. So if you like her work, keep reading. If Big Little Lies left you cold, go ahead and bail. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
bluejanetennessee I have enjoyed her other books. I'll give this one another shot. 😊 6y
LiteraryinPA Did you end up reading more? For me, it‘s probably my least favorite of her books. She‘s one of my favorite authors. 6y

Presented as fiction, this book is based on real political and economic upheaval and graphically real poverty and crime in Jamaica. This book seemed to drag in places but it is rich with recent dark history of this beautiful country. I really enjoyed it. If you've ever traveled to Jamaica and ventured beyond the expensive resorts with high walls I think you'll be fascinated.

tpixie Welcome! 🥳📚🥳 6y

This is another of my all-time favorites. The writing is gorgeous. The book is much better than the movie (although I did enjoy the movie). I love the theme of a long journey. It symbolizes so much.

Freespirit I have had this book on my shelf for years to read😁 6y

Such good writing. This book helped me to appreciate middle-eastern culture and recent history. So so good.

Brewychock48 I loved that book. He is a great writer. A Thousand Splendid Suns was great also. 6y
LiterarySloth I second A Thousand Splendid Suns. Such a great read. 6y

Unsheltered: A Novel | Barbara Kingsolver

Bailedbailed

I cannot express how disappointed I am. I could not get through it. I was so annoyed by the main character. Barbara Kingsolver is one of my favorite authors but she lost her mojo on this one.

TheBookgeekFrau This is why I love Litsy - I thought she got her mojo Back with this one 😄🤷‍♀️ 6y
bluejanetennessee Go figure! Glad you enjoyed it. 😁 6y

booklahoma I've tried but never enjoyed Kingsolver. Her writing comes across as turgid, ham-handed preaching to me. But a lot of people I know and respect like her books, so maybe I am an outlier. 😀 6y
bluejanetennessee @booklahoma I grew up in Tulsa. Where are you from? 6y
bluejanetennessee @C.Perone thank you! 6y
booklahoma @bluejanetennessee Originally from Florida, but lived in Tulsa for a dozen years in the '80s and '90s. Bought a house near Grand Lake last year and live there most of the time now. 😀 6y
bluejanetennessee @booklahoma Lucky you! I have spent many wonderful days on Grand Lake. My ex and I had a sailboat and a little lake house near Ketchum in the '80s and '90s. 6y
bluejanetennessee @booklahoma If you ever decide to give Kingsolver a try again I think Poisonwood Bible and Prodigal Summer are her best and have the least preachy-ishness. 😁 6y
booklahoma @bluejanetennessee Tried both of those Kingsolvers. Just not my thing. 😬 I drive through Ketchum to get to my vet in Cleora. 😃 6y
bluejanetennessee @booklahoma Yep, you are NOT a Kingsolver guy. Our cabin was on Scotty's cove. 6y
booklahoma @bluejanetennessee That's a nice area. Calm waters, so I would bet that was good for sailing. ⛵️ I live on the southeast side near Dripping Springs and Drowning Creek. Can't wait for summer! 6y

TheBookgeekFrau Lol - I didn't like this one. I love it that we both enjoy Kingsolver but are opposites on individual books. What did you think of Flight Pattern? 6y

bluejanetennessee @C.Perone How funny! I liked Flighty Pattern but felt it dragged in parts. She does get a little preachy and has an ecology agenda, which I totally support. What did you think of Flight Pattern? 6y
TheBookgeekFrau @bluejanetennessee Finally! A Kingsolver we agree on 😄👏 That's how I felt about it as well 6y

This is the tattoo on my left shoulder. It a Mockingbird and an (Atticus) finch. I read this book when I was 11 and it shook my world. It taught me how unfair and evil life can be. And how sweet, righteous and good life can be. ❤
