City of the Lost | Kelley Armstrong
72 posts | 91 read | 102 to read
City of the Lost, the bestselling six-part digital series, is now in one volume for the first time. In this new thriller, New York Times and Globe and Mail bestselling author Kelley Armstrong delivers us to Rockton, a secret little town in the far north where the hunted go to hide. And where a hunter has now come to play. Casey Duncan once killed a man and got away with it. But that's not why she's on the run. Her best friend's ex has found Diana again, despite all Casey has done to protect her. And Diana has decided the only way she'll ever be safe is if she finds the mythical town she's heard of where people like her can go to hide. Turns out the town really exists, and will take Diana, but only if Casey, a talented young police detective, comes too. Imagine a hidden town, isolated in the Yukon wilderness, where everyone is pretending to be someone they're not. Even good people can get up to some very bad stuff. The laconic town sheriff dispenses his own frontier justice, but he's more accustomed to sobering up drunks in the horse trough, than attempting to solve the series of brutal murders that has rocked the town. As much as he hates it, he needs Casey. As for Casey, coming to the far North may have started out as a sacrifice she was willing to make for her best friend. But maybe, just maybe, she needs Rockton as much as the town needs her.

I read the second one in this series a bit ago and the first finally became available. I was unsurprised that I enjoyed it especially getting to know the background to the characters and watch their relationships develop. I think the second was better in terms of plot and intrigue. But this was still a great way to stay entertained over a long weekend of yard work and beach time ☀️☀️

Trying to get back into a couple of monthly challenges with #JulyJourneys

For #CanadaDay 🇨🇦🍁 I am going for a favorite series set in the wilds of the Yukon. I am small kine obsessed with the mysterious hidden Canadian town of Rockton & its often dubious citizens & I have read all 6 books in the series so far. Some are stronger than others, but they always leave me craving the next one.

Bookzombie Another series I need to get to! 1y
MicheleinPhilly I own several of these but have yet to start the series. 1y

Yukon for #ReadCanada

Not my usual genre, but that's why I do challenges. A solid read, with compelling characters. Kelley Armstrong has been on my radar of authors to check out for quite a while, so I was glad of the excuse to finally read one of hers.

Andrea4 Omg I want to read this series! But actually listen to it and am annoyed I can't get it in audio! Lol a coworker mentioned her because she LOVES her and kyle and the Yukon thing lol 2y
llwheeler @Andrea4 I bet it would be really long in audio, it's longer than I expected. 2y
Andrea4 @llwheeler after Les mis and Don Quixote, nothing is *that* long in audio lmao 2y

llwheeler @Andrea4 😂 well, true 2y
Andrea4 @llwheeler plus, for me, if it's a big ass book, I'm going to want audio so I can do other things. *Men* I know you don't like doing other things while listening. *De* I don't like being trapped by a physical book's limitations bahaha. Also hope you like my use of random grk particles. 2y
llwheeler @Andrea4 haha awesome use of grk particles, I love it. I know what you mean though, and I do like doing things while I listen... Just very specific things lol, basically just crafting and phone games... So it does take me longer to get through a book. 2y

#TBRPile 📚 Detective Casey Duncan has a dark past, and it‘s about to catch up with her. When her friend Diana is attacked by an abusive ex, the two women realise they have to disappear, fast. Diana has heard of a hidden town that‘s so remote it‘s almost impossible to reach. A town that desperately needs a new detective...

This is a very promising start to a thriller series. Loved the setting and characters and the whole premise is just thoroughly original. I do think that the mystery was unnecessarily convoluted but I still really enjoyed this and am reading the next one immediately! Published in 2017, there are four additional books currently available.

Hooked_on_books I love this series! After the first one, I was concerned with how she would manage to keep the story fresh, but she‘s done a beautiful job with it. 2y
Lissa00 @Hooked_on_books oh, good to know! Especially since I already bought the rest of the available series so I could binge read😂 2y

#SoaringScores #catchup
I have about 5 prompts to catch up on this weekend so I will do them in no particular order.
When I think of a #TimeBombTown I think of the hidden Rockton, tucked away in the Canadian Yukon & filled with people hiding from something. It always seems like a ticking time bomb is waiting to go off there. (And yes, I use this series a lot! 😉) Waiting for book #5.

Hooked_on_books I love this series! 3y

#WanderingJune
I'm not sure I'd want to say #LetsGetLost for too long in Rockton, (a secret off-the-grid town in the Yukon Territory full of people on the run, looking for a quiet place to disappear to), but it certainly intrigues me. The Rockton series is one that grabbed me from the first (tagged) book, and I am now waiting for book five.

Hooked_on_books I love this series 3y

Whoa! Armstrong's style immediately drew me in. Can't wait to read the next installment!

Casey, with her police experience and maternal instincts can't help but do everything in her power to protect Diana from her threatening ex. When he takes his prowling a step too far, and Casey finds herself in a troubling situation of her own- the friends flee the city for a new start in a town full of would-be convicts tucked away in Yukon Territory.

Where to start with this book? It was AMAZING! I loved that it was set in Canada, I feel like more books should be haha (I'm Canadian so I'm biased) the plot was very interesting and I loved the writing style. I also liked the main character, she felt very real. A really enjoyable book with a good plot. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for the rest of the series!

Interesting story. Some really great plot twists and a setting in the forests just below the Arctic Circle that was fascinating. I adored Casey, I liked the way she thought and I loved how smart she was. Great protagonist. About 2/3 of the way through it got a little draggy and went from practically no romance to a little bit too much, but I still took quite a shine to this book. Looking forward with great anticipation to the next. #murdermystery

Torn on this one. I really like the idea of the town off the grid, where you can disappear when you need to. I liked the dynamics among the characters. My problem was that I had just recently reread/finished Kelley Armstrong's Nadia Stafford trilogy, and there were too many similarities in the main characters. Not quite cut-and-paste, but it bugged me. Hopefully the rest of the series will be less deja-vu.

This one is a re-read for me as I have the second one on #MountTBR. I enjoy the premise that there is a secret town in the wilderness - a whole another 'world' secret from everyday life - though there are no supernatural elements to these books. But the safe haven of Rockton may not be so safe after all.

I really enjoyed this thriller. Usually I can tell who did it but this one had me guessing until the end. I was surprised at who was the culprit but once I thought back to the evidence it made sense.

I really wish that Casey wasn't so level headed and calm though. Some people could have used a tongue lashing from her.

Whoa, this book goes from 0 to 60 within the 1st chapter and doesn't really stop. It was completely unexpected and a fun read. It's an unusual setting and premise (in the Yukon), set in a hidden town where the people are all hiding from the law. Casey, a homicide detective (and a murderer), goes with her friend, a dv victim. When Casey arrives, she and the sheriff investigate murders of a few townspeople.
