Murder in the Dark
Murder in the Dark: Phryne Fisher's Murder Mysteries 16 | Kerry Greenwood
20 posts | 21 read | 12 to read
In her sixteenth adventure, the delectable Phryne Fisher has been invited to the Last Best party of 1928. When three of the guests are kidnapped Phryne finds she must puzzle her way through the scavenger hunt clues to retrieve the hostages. It's Christmas, and Phryne has an invitation to the Last Best party of 1928, a four-day extravaganza being held at Werribee Manor house and grounds by the Golden Twins, Isabella and Gerald Templar. She knew them in Paris, where they caused a sensation. Phryne is in two minds about going when she starts receiving anonymous threats warning her against attending. She promptly decides to accept the invitation - after all, no one tells Phryne what to do. At the Manor, she is accommodated in the Iris room, and at the party meets two polo-playing women, a Goat lady (and goat), a large number of glamorous young men and a very rude child called Tarquin. The acolytes of the golden twins are smoking hashish and dreaming, and Phryne finds that the jazz is as hot as the drinks are cold and indulges in flirtations, dancing, and mint juleps. Heaven. It all seems like good clean fun until three people are kidnapped, one of them the abominable child, and Phryne must puzzle her way through the cryptic clues of the scavenger hunt to retrieve the hostages and save the party from disaster.

I finished my #doublespin, a recent purchase, very late last night. I adore this series and go through waves of binging them.

I used to buy these from Book Depository (RIP), but switched to Blackwell's. I think I can safely #blameitonlitsy for that one :-D

@TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I've been in a similar BD to Blackwell's boat! Sometimes I NEED the British editions!! 😂 7mo

Book 16 in my reread of the Phryne Fisher series via audiobook is another one of my favorites. These seem to get better with each reading, and as usual, the narrator Stephanie Daniel is phenomenal. I can‘t recommend this series enough. 5⭐️

One more down in my #PhryneMarathon with 4 to go! There‘s only a few series that I can reread on a regular basis, these, Dame Agatha(both Poirot & Miss Marple), The Wheel Of Time & Anne McCaffrey are some. They never get old, just better. Phryne is invited to a large country house party for the end of 1928, but the host has another motive for her, to investigate death threats. Complete with an assassin to uncover, French bohemians & polo players.

It's a long, an heteroclite bunch of things that make a kinda nasty soup of cliches on race, women, drugs you name it it's there. I was taken a bit by surprise because this series had a better than average outlook with these subjects. Big herring... the add on of cocktails recipes. When the bath bubbles fragrances, lunch picnic food and child abuse are on the same level it's time for me to reconsider if I'm still on board with the series.

writerlibrarian Now question for @Cinfhen or @BarbaraTheBibliophage or @4thhouseontheleft could this count as #booked2019spring #nightoriented because I do not have the stomach to read what was my choice. But me, being a completist and read in order freak I read this one before. Big mistake, huge. ☹️ (edited) 5y
Cinfhen Sure!!!! Dark is night oriented !!!!! Clever💫wouldn‘t want all that reading time go to waste 😂 5y
writerlibrarian @Cinfhen 🥰 this was a waste of precious reading time. I did finish it because it had the paralyzing effect of watching a train wreck. Thanks. (edited) 5y

Being me, I “need” to read in order a series. It's impossible to skip ahead hence I'm reading #16 before reading #17 for #booked2019. Good thing Worlds is on this morning. 🇺🇸 vs 🇩🇪

Bk16 Of The Phryne Fisher series is done. Appropriately, it‘s set Xmas/NewYear of 1928 at a house party in the country. After spending Xmas with her extended family, Phryne has gone to the Best Last Party Of 1928 for a week of eating, dancing & games. But her hosts, the beautiful Templar twins from Paris, have an enemy who‘s not just trying to kill them, but destroy their whole world. When their two young charges go missing, Phryne goes into action.

Sitting on my verandah, reading my Xmas/New Year set Phryne Fisher novel, watching the kids enjoy our display & handing out lollies. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday night!

I‘m a Greenwood fan (but I can‘t stand what the screen adaptation has done to this character, lazy idiocy but I digress!). Murder in the Dark is set at the Last Best Party of 1928 being Christmas & New Years so anyone is looking for a non-traditional seasonal read (& Australia so it‘s HOT!), I‘d recommend adding this to your list. Solid plotting, great characters, a goat, an assassin, a spy and Greenwood‘s superb language use. Highly recommended!

Okay, stretching a tad but #NovemberByTheNumbers for today is the 27th page of the book I‘m about to read on my long haul flight back to Mumbai after a lovely, if fraught and crazy, trip home. 😊😊😊 After such a trip, only Kerry Greenwood would do (But I‘m glad this series is by in large set in Melbourne, I don‘t think I could read about Sydney while leaving it!!).

Jas16 Hope you a safe and easy as possible journey. 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Jas16 thanks 😊 It‘s done and wasn‘t too horrific but the Guy next to me on our first flight spilt his beer all over my leg! 😭😭😭 thankfully the inflight magazine in my lap caught a lot but smelling of beer isn‘t my preferred way to spend two long flights (9hrs and 5hrs) or a 2hr layover 😭 but... home! 6y

#AugustGrrrl #RichGirl #AndItsAugust #Sassy #day22 The Honourable Phryne Fisher fits both prompts extremely well. She's a very rich girl, came from having nothing on the streets of Melbourne to a titled mansion in England after WWI,she owns a beautiful house, dresses in style & drives around in a red Hispano Suiza.Sassy!Sass doesn't begin to cover her personality. She's smart, cheeky, very confident, snarky, sensual & 100% woman. #phryneappreciationclub

Oh how I long for Phryne's wardrobe! She always has the most gorgeous dresses and the most fabulous hats. #style #jubilantjuly

Inpatiently waiting for the beginning of the #AsSeenOnTv tomorrow, here's my review of the latest #MissFisher l've read.
Bit disappointing, actually. The story was all over the place and more concerned with fashion and dinner party menu than with the mystery. Being Miss Fisher, it was nice all the same, but l wouldn't recommand this title out of the series

Finally off from work. It's been a tiring couple of days, l don't even know why.
Let me get to the train and read some more of this.
And if l have any luck, l'll be visiting the Art Deco exposition too. Really really hope so 😆

Halfway through it, l'm quite disappointed with this #MissFisher novel

batsy I haven't read the books but adore the TV series. I'm afraid to read it because I think it might not be able to hold up against the amazing presence of Phrynne Fisher onscreen! 7y
JazzFeathers @batsy l've only read three of these books, but l already see they are quite uneven in quality. I really really liked the first l've read. I think that, for many reasons, the tv series is more organically rendered. 7y
batsy @JazzFeathers That's such a shame about the uneven quality! I will probably try the first one in the series, it seems to be the one most people like 🙂 7y

I loved this book! The writing was masterfully done. Historical details were accurate and informative. The people such as the Templars were unique and lovely. My favorite character was Mintie the goat. I cheered when he stole the show at the polo match! This is a must read!!

I braved the cold and wind (Snow has stopped here and has melted from pavement) to get my order from thrift books. Super excited that I was able to get this edition from them because only the tv show tie in cover is available on Amazon. 2 more from this series should be arriving tomorrow and then I'll only be 2 or 3 books away from owning the whole series. If you haven't read these or watched Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, I highly recommend!

Hit a slump with The Summer That Melted Everything so I switched to the next Miss Fisher instead. I love these books!❤️Phryne & family have just celebrated Xmas when she receives an invitation to go to The Last Best Party of 1928, a 4 day decadent party to be held at Chirnside manor in the Victorian hills. But someone doesn't want her there, that someone sends her a coral snake as a gift & nearly kills her. Phryne is now set on going of course!5⭐️

Gillyreads I love the show but haven't read any of the books yet 7y
