1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline for Children 212 | Thomas W. Phelan, PhD
16 posts | 16 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
The simplest, most effective program for raising disciplined, happy children This revised edition of the award-winning 1-2-3 Magic program addresses the difficult task of child discipline with humor, keen insight, and proven experience. The technique offers a foolproof method of disciplining children ages two through 12 without arguing, yelling, or spanking. By means of three easy-to-follow steps, parents learn to manage troublesome behavior, encourage good behavior, and strengthen the parent-child relationshipavoiding the Talk-Persuade-Argue-Yell-Hit syndrome that frustrates so many parents. Ten strategies for building a childs self-esteem and the six types of testing and manipulation a parent can expect from the child are discussed, as well as tips on how to prevent homework arguments, make mealtimes more enjoyable, conduct effective family meetings, and encourage children to start doing their household chores. New advice about kids and technology and new illustrations bring this essential parenting companion completely up to date.

My husband and I are having our first buddy read😅 The terrible twos have come to call for our little guy and his pediatrician recommended this book. I'm excited and hopeful given the great reviews I've seen on it, also counting it for #nonfiction2021

Read this at the recommendation of the pediatrician. She suggests all parents of toddlers read it to combat the terrible twos and try to prevent issues as their children get older. I found it to be really informative and learned about my own parenting technique through stories given by other parents. 5⭐️

Tamra I still use this technique when ears are turned off and it works! (12 & 9) 5y
Tamra 2s were a piece of cake compared to 3. 😜 Though I have to say my kids weren‘t tantrum or “no” prone, it was mostly just not listening. 5y
vkois88 @Tamra mine likes to test how far she can push alllll the limits lol... 5y

Tamra @vkois88 parenthood, best hardest job! Like the book emphasizes, it might be difficult to implement at first because she won‘t understand or believe you are serious, but she will figure it out! 😁 Plus I do believe they need that time between 1 & 2 to pause, slow down, and consider. It also gives them a choice! (edited) 5y
vkois88 @Tamra I‘m excited to really implement it!!! 5y
Tamra @vkois88 hang in there! 🤞🏾👍🏾 5y
Chelsea.Poole We use this and I love it! It's the only thing that has worked for my 4 year old. 5y
vkois88 @Chelsea.Poole you and @tamra are giving me a lot of hope ❤️❤️❤️ 5y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Hey! I need to read this for when my grands stay over 5y
vkois88 @Joyfulmimi you should!! I listened to it on Scribd but I also found a used physical copy for cheap 5y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I will get it somehow. Thanks @vkois88 5y

Read this parenting book all the way through and it is truly life-changing for our family. I love the key concepts:
1. Parents have three jobs: to stop "bad" behaviors, start "good" behaviors, and bond with their children
2. "Count" behaviors that can stop within 2 seconds and children go to their rooms at 3.
3. Do not use excess words or emotions when discipline is necessary, simply count
4. If time out (5 min) is served don't discuss it after

Buechersuechtling Maybe I‘m a whimp but it just made my heart feel warm to see that this book helped you and your family. 🤗 5y
Zoes_Human Talk to me about what's in that bowl, because it looks delicious. 5y
Chelsea.Poole @Buechersuechtling thank you so much ☺️ 5y
Chelsea.Poole @Zoes_Human soo good! It's half a veggie bowl from Chipotle: brown rice, double fajita veggies, pinto beans, corn salsa, pico, cheese, sour cream, romaine lettuce. I eat half for dinner and save the next have for my lunch the next day. 😋 5y

I read/post about a bunch of parenting books. This may very well be the last one you guys will ever have to see from my account (but still not making any promises 😆)
123 Magic is working!!! My 4.5 year old is responding so well to this program and I highly recommend this book if you're in need of a new direction for stopping bad behaviors and encouraging good ones.
Still reading, but I've put into place some of this already and it's been great.

Scochrane26 I‘m a therapist, we‘ve been using this for years w/ client & parents. It‘s been years since I‘ve watched the dvd, but I‘ve seen it so much, I still have some memorized. We use it because it‘s easy to understand & implement. Glad you‘re liking it! (edited) 5y
Chelsea.Poole @Scochrane26 soo glad to hear this! Since I've begun this 123 journey with my oldest, I've come across many others who use it and IT WORKS! 🥳 5y

There‘s not a ton of reading time in my schedule, but one of my #ReadingGoals this month is to finish this one up. Although at first glance it‘s about disciplining my child‘s behavior, it definitely still falls under #SelfImprovementSept because at its heart, it‘s just as much about controlling MY reaction to challenging behavior.

This book is for parents who want to draw boundaries or discipline their children in a kinder way. It uses a counting method to help children to learn about how to make their own choices to modify their behaviour.

I think this will be helpful with my son. I disagreed with the author about some of his views on children, but I liked that this method allows me to treat my son with respect while drawing appropriate boundaries.

amywithbooks I have used this strategy a lot with families I have worked with over the years (I'm a behavior analyst). When used consistently it is very effective! 7y
Libby1 Thanks, @avgeyer . It has been useful so far. We haven't even made it to 3 yet! 7y

@RealLifeReading

Here are 4 books (other than all my library books) that I hope to read or finish in June.

After a day of epic parenting fails I am revisiting 1-2-3 Magic. 😬

The next season of Poldark starts on 11 June in the UK (Yippee! ❤️) so I want to catch up on that story.

And as I'm going to Spain next month I want to read Guernica re-read Shadow of the Wind. 🇪🇸

Looks like a good month!

LisaJo We do not get the new Poldark in the US until Oct 1st. 7y
Libby1 Oh no, @LisaJo ! It is so so good. 7y

This was okay, but I find it hard to trust any book with call outs labeled "Quik Tip".
