Running: A Novel | Cara Hoffman
17 posts | 14 read | 25 to read
From the critically acclaimed author of Be Safe I Love You comes a dark and breathtaking novel of love, friendship, and survival set in the red light district of Athens in the 1980s that Garth Greenwall calls a ferocious, brilliant book. Running brings together an ensemble of outsiders who get by as runnershustlers who sell tourists on low-end accommodations for a small commission and a place to stay. Bridey Sullivan, a young American woman who has fled a peculiar and traumatic upbringing in Washington State, takes up with a queer British couple, the poet Milo Rollack and Eton drop-out Jasper Lethe. Slipping in and out of homelessness, addiction, and under-the-table jobs, they create their own kind of family as they struggle to survive. Jaspers madness and consequent death frame a narrative of emotional intensity. In its midst this trio become linked to an act of terrorism. The group then splinters, taking us from Athens to the cliffs of the Mediterranean, and to modern-day New York. Whether in the red light district of Athens or in the world of fire jumpers in the Pacific Northwest, we are always in a space of gorgeously wrought otherness. Running shows novelist Cara Hoffman to be writing at the peak of her craft.

TheDaysGoBy That‘s so great! I just started training for a virtual 5k I‘m doing with my sister and unless something clicks/changes in the next couple months, I doubt I‘ll end up as a full time runner. So awesome for you! Amazing! 3y

I really loved how gritty and grimy this book was. It served some Trainspotting realness which can never be a bad thing.

I found the characters in this book difficult to connect with, and it seemed that the writing style called too much attention to itself and thus obscured the story. I wonder if a more straightforward narrative voice would have let the story stay in the forefront. The sentences were well-crafted; but as a whole, the book didn't draw me in. Great cover, though!

#libraryhaul

I've been on hiatus from the library while finishing up Mount TBR. But, now I'm back with these goodies. Any suggestions for which to pick up first??

Hooked_on_books I just heard about Infomocrary on the ATB podcast, so I'd go with that one. I look forward to seeing what you think of it! 7y
cocomass I'll be interested to hear what you think of the Reluctant Fundamentalist. After Exit West I also want to explore Hamid's backlist! 7y
meggofrank The only one I've read is Infomocracy, but it's stellar. 7y

This book is destined for great things. The writing is great, the characters are well-rounded, and the story keeps you reading page after page. But you know, though I see that this book is well executed, I didn't connect with it on a personal level. It's not the book's fault. 😅 #ItsNotYouItsMe So I def still recommend it; it's just not my thing.

But I adore this design. 😍 The three primary colors are repeated over and over all over the jacket.

Cinfhen Interesting cover 😁 7y
kdwinchester @Cinfhen To say the least. 😂 I almost drew pants on them before I posted but I was like, it's not more then what's on a Ken doll these days. 😆 7y
Cinfhen Hahah, soooo true😜 7y

Loved this dark story of three teens "running" for a red-light district hotel in 1980's Athens. They soon take some turns that have them in deeper trouble than they're really prepared for. Unique! Original! Full review this week on http://www.novelvisits.com.

Thanks to Simon & Schuster for the ARC. The book was excellent, but so dark for my tastes. Many unlikeable (or at least hard to like) people, doing things I couldn't imagine and for reasons that were often not entirely made clear. All things I don't like. That said, I would recommend the novel. The writing is evocative and the characters and settings were crystal clear in my mind.

"The city was like a beacon. And it drew us from wherever we'd been left. For me, the outskirts of a smoke jumped's base in a cold mountain town, for Jasper and Milo the London suburbs and rain-soaked council housing of Manchester. We were looking for nothing and had found it in Athens: Demeter's lips white as stone, Apollo's yellow mantle sun washed, sanded, wind blown to granite..."
