Another Bullshit Night in Suck City: A Memoir
Another Bullshit Night in Suck City: A Memoir | Nick Flynn
"A stunningly beautiful new memoir . . . a near-perfect work of literature." Stephen Elliot, San Francisco Chronicle Nick Flynn met his father when he was working as a caseworker in a homeless shelter in Boston. As a teenager he'd received letters from this stranger father, a self-proclaimed poet and con man doing time in federal prison for bank robbery. Another Bullshit Night in Suck City tells the story of the trajectory that led Nick and his father onto the streets, into that shelter, and finally to each other.

I picked this book up many years ago, because i thought the title was cool. Its nothing like what i expected. The title is how the authors father explains how he feels spending another night on the streets, but the story is really about how the writer struggles with the actions of his dad. Homelessness, alcoholism, violence, death, drugs, kindness, love, its all in this memoir and its told in a genuine heartfelt way.

Every year for the past almost 20 years, my spouse has gotten me library books from my TBR for Christmas. He hides them around the room for the kids to find and give to me, so it's a family affair. Here's the stack from this year. I'm so excited for so many of these, I don't know where to start!

ljuliel The bottom one is SO good ! 5y
EmilyM The title of the tagged book is great!😂 5y
ImperfectCJ @EmilyM It's my kids' favorite. (Surprise surprise.) 5y

Crazeedi That is a lovely tradition! I'm going to steal it!😉❤ 5y
LiteraryinPA Awesome idea! 5y
ImperfectCJ @ljuliel If I remember right, it was your review that prompted me to stack that one! I started it today, and hopefully I can get some quiet reading time while my family are out watching the new Star Wars movie tomorrow... 5y
ljuliel It‘s really terrific. Very different writing style. The sentences are really long, as I think the author is a bit long- winded. I like the odd words he uses that you never see in other books. Get ready to meet some ZANY characters ! I hope you like it as much as I did. (. If you do, there are 2 other books that follow the same townsfolk : Off For the Sweet Hereafter. And , The Last of How It Was. 5y

A memoir of this poet's reunion with his father at a homeless #shelter in Boston. He was a social worker there, and his father was a resident. #letstravelaugust @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620

OriginalCyn620 Sounds like heavy subject matter but the title is excellent! 5y

#BecausetheNight | Nick Flynn was a homeless shelter social worker in 1980s Boston. It was there he discovered his estranged, alcoholic, conman father. I‘ve never seen the film (Being Flynn) based on this, but it‘s a fantastic memoir.

britt_brooke @OrangeMooseReads Excellent! 💚 6y
britt_brooke @gradcat I love the title, too. So odd! When it was made into the film Being Flynn, the reprint of the book took on the same name. I like the original title much more. 💚 6y
Cinfhen The title alone is pretty perfect 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen It is. I love the title. And it‘s explained in the book. 6y
gradcat I don‘t even know of the movie...I think I‘m going to have to check it out as well. But you‘re absolutely right—they should never have changed that title! 6y

“Even a life raft is only supposed to get you from the sinking ship back to land, you were never intended to live in the life raft, to drift years on end, in sight of land but never close enough.”

This was a #reread via #audio. The memoir is as good, maybe better, than I remembered, but I wasn‘t a huge fan of Scott Brick‘s narration. I much prefer the print version and the original title (as ridiculous as it sounds). It just fits better.

bio_chem06 Did you watch the movie? 7y
kamoorephoto That title though!!! 😹 that felt like my evening.... 7y
britt_brooke @bio_chem06 Not yet. I can‘t decide if I want to. Is it good? 7y

bio_chem06 @britt_brooke I really liked it, but I really like the actor who played Flynn. So maybe I'm biased. 7y
britt_brooke @bio_chem06 I‘ll have to watch it sometime - thanks! 7y

I‘m still pretty new to #audio and not yet familiar with any well-known narrators. So anyway, I loved this book in print and I‘m rereading it via audio, but I‘m not digging the narration. I googled the guy and he‘s narrated over 800 books, so it‘s obviously just me. 🙃 Are you guys Scott Brick fans? Maybe he‘ll grow on me?

Andrew65 He reads the Cotton Malone Series by Steve Berry, and wouldn't say he is my favourite narrator. I really enjoy Simon Vance as a narrator. One of my favourite audiobooks is (edited) 7y
britt_brooke @Andrew65 Thanks! And I plan on rereading The Help on audio at some point so that‘s good to know. 👍🏻 7y
MarriedtoMrT A narrator can totally kill a story when I don‘t click with their style! I‘m new to audio too and haven‘t learned many narrators but I second Simon Vance because he did a fantastic job with 7y

Andrew65 @MarriedtoMrT He also did a great job of bringing to life Bring Up The Bodies by Hilary Mantel, because of him I enjoyed this far more than the first one. And also all the Sherlock Holmes books by Arthur Conan Doyle. 7y
MarriedtoMrT @Andrew65 Thank you! I am definitely going to have to check him out for Sherlock Holmes! I am sad to say I‘ve only ever watched/read reimaginings of SH but never the original. 7y
Andrew65 @MarriedtoMrT I used one of my credits for The Complete Sherlock Holmes (51 hours) and it had all the Sherlock Holmes books. Good value I thought. 7y
britt_brooke @MarriedtoMrT Same here. I‘m not very far in so I‘m sure I‘ll get used to him. Hopefully. 🤞🏻 I look forward to listening to a Simon Vance narrated book! 7y
Dogearedcopy Scott Brick is a very polarizing narrator in terms of fandom. It seems either that listeners love him or they hate him! That said, I loved his narration of ‘In Cold Blood‘ (by Truman Capote,) but haven‘t liked anything else he has done :-/ (edited) 7y
Dogearedcopy You‘ll eventually find “your” narrator, and the cool thing is that s/he will probably lead you to books you might not have otherwise considered :-) 7y
britt_brooke @Dogearedcopy Good to know that he‘s hit or miss and it‘s not just me. There‘s something about his voice or accent that gives an air of superiority that grates on me. I look forward to checking out different narrators. So far, I‘ve mostly listened to memoirs read by the author. I enjoy that. 7y
