What fresh hell is this?

This book of 19th century children‘s cautionary tales is terrifying. It must be seen to be believed.

Don‘t have nightmares.

wanderinglynn 😬 that‘s terrifying! 2d
julesG One of my first books. Terrifying but a treasure. I know it by heart. It's made me cautious of fire, always eat up, and I've never beaten an animal. I still tend to look up at the sky while walking (sometimes driving). 2d
Angitron We had to read some of these in German class. You‘re right - they are horrifying! 2d

Libby1 @wanderinglynn and @Angitron - I think the drawing I chose is one of the less terrifying. 2d
Libby1 @julesG - wonderful! I wonder how I would have reacted to it as a child. 2d
quirkyreader I always thought that Peter‘s nails were creepy. 2d
Billypar I like the cats in this picture. Instead of darting away, it's like they're rising up with 'Oh my God!' expressions 😺 2d
Libby1 @quirkyreader - they are TERRIFYING. 2d
Libby1 @Billypar - the cats literally cry her a river as she burns to ashes. This book is messed up! 2d

It‘s so cold here that I just panicked and reacted how I always do and bought books 😑 so I made it *checks calendar* 2 weeks into my annual book buying ban.

Whoops 😬

readingjedi Respect due. 2 weeks is an amazing achievement. Some years I don't manage a single day! 3d
Scochrane26 I don‘t think it‘s a bad thing to buy books—we are helping bookstores & authors. Maybe just try buying less. I know I‘ll buy some books this yr. right now, I‘m trying to focus on reading what I have because I bought a lot in nov-dec. 3d
Jas16 You beat me! 3d
Reagan @Scochrane26 you‘re right! I would like to try to read more than I buy this year, read owned books I mean. 2d
Reagan @readingjedi @Jas16 😂 this was a pretty good run for me. 2d

Pickpick

I pulled these two golden oldies out today to read to my nieces and they loved them! Who doesn‘t want to meet Mrs. God, Shaniqua the angel, and Bruce God‘s secretary. This is a fun and beautifully illustrated set of books that allow children let their imaginations run free about what it means to create a world!

Pickpick

While reading Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, I kept thinking that the illustrations looked familiar. It‘s the same guy who did Willie the Squowse!! I love the story of Willie who inadvertently changes the lives of the two families who live on either side of the wall that he lives between. I read this many times as a child, and can‘t wait to read it to my nephews!!

No, this didn‘t sparkle with me.

Maybe I did see it too much through “adult” eyes but I felt that it‘s a pretty imbalanced friendship since it‘s mostly Little Bear who‘s doing all the helpful things. Little Tiger‘s only share seems to be his fear that Tigerente (tiger duck) gets hurt. 🙄

Also it‘s too narrowly considered to say that if you have a friend, [who …] you have nothing to fear.

But: All the praise for the basic statement‼️👏🏼

1) can't remember which was THE first, but the tagged book was among the first. I had to learn reading the old German letters because it was pretty much a reprint of the very first edition.

2) Chernobyl and Challenger (6y/o), Berlin Wall (9y/o)

3) red onion syrup for coughs, tea and chicken soup

This was the summary I posted on LT of my 2019 reading year.

BarbaraBB Love this recap. And how irritating that the touchstones didn‘t work 1w
charl08 I think we crashed the system in our enthusiasm for a new reading year! 1w
Butterfinger I'm starting Joseph and His Brothers by Mann this week and I thought of you. 1w
arubabookwoman @Butterfinger I‘ve had that on the shelf for years, but right now it‘s packed away in storage for our move. Don‘t know when I‘ll get to it. It‘s about 3 times as long as Buddenbrooks isn‘t it? 1w

Since I often use this as a winged word but am not really sure if I know the story, I decided to put this little audio play (one hour) on hold to refresh my memory.

Looking forward to it. I think it has the right length for #audiocooking.
