These stories are so uniquely Flannery O‘Connor. She has such a distinct voice. These are dark, multi-layered stories filled with unlikeable characters. What‘s not to love? 😆

My first Flannery O‘Connor. Each short story packs a heavy wallop; seems like the pattern here is the consequences (often terrible) of a particular character clinging to their old set of values and beliefs despite a changing South. This stubbornness soon figuratively hobbles them (or just plain kills them). As with all good books, there is much more to be gleaned, but that will have to take a second reading.

It‘s the birthday of Mary Flannery O‘Connor (my phone wanted to autocorrect Flannery to Flaubert!), born on this day in 1925. PBS premiered an American Masters episode on her this week, which is wonderful. It‘s free for streaming till 4/21.

This book took me some time to read, but mainly because I had to digest each story before I continued with the next. #1001books

A beautifully written collection of short stories that takes on race, class, and morality—with a large dollop of irony. Pretty much all of her characters are flawed, hypocritical, and not nearly as nice or superior as they believe themselves to be. If you‘re looking for happy endings, don‘t look here.

1. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is probably the last series I read, long time ago. I'm much more into stand-alone titles.
2. Six Feet Under.
3. Yes. Fave team is the Mets. When I lived in San Diego and then DC, I followed the Padres and the Nationals. Still fond of them.
4. Homemade dal or homemade veggie burgers.
5. Occasionally. I remember once he was reading The Pump - House Gang.

Today was a busy Pentecost Sunday! I went to my church in Bethlehem, then enjoyed making and eating makloubeh and katayef with two members of the congregation. I spent 6 hours at their house, talking and cooking and laughing. 😊

Now I‘m settled down for some more of the #8intwo #minireadathon - 6/8 hours complete! I have a bad headache today, so some rest by the fan with an #audiobook is much needed. #readathon #8in2

What can I say? I always love Flannery O‘Connor. Shocking at times, grim but also beautiful (in a grim way). I don‘t think anyone writes about the American South as well as O‘Connor.

This month, I‘m reading women who have inspired me the most. I started with Shirley Jackson. Now, it‘s Flannery O‘Connor. I think I‘ll return to Joan Didion next.

I had the house to myself this morning and I finished these short stories. O'Connor has such an ear for voices that her character's speech pegs them perfectly. Like O'Henry before her, there is often a twist or surprise at the end, but these are much darker than most of the O'Henry stories I have read. #southernwriter #shortstories

I'm needing something non-political to read, so I'm starting these tonight and hoping to lift my mood.

In such a reading slump right now. Everything feels mediocre. So I grabbed something I've already read and know is amazing. I love doing this- coming back to books I haven't read in 20 years. They are always different reads now.

Wanted to like these stories, but just not for me. Painful slog through stories in which I was never rooting for any of the characters.

She was a good Christian woman with a large respect for religion, though she did not, of course, believe any of it was true.

She had observed that the more education they got, the less they could do. Their father had gone to a one-room schoolhouse through the eighth grade and he could do anything.

In a short-story workshop this fall, figured it wise to consult the master.
