A Snicker of Magic | Natalie Lloyd

Introducing an extraordinary new voice---a magical debut that will make your skin tingle, your eyes glisten . . .and your heart sing. Midnight Gulch used to be a magical place, a town where people could sing up thunderstorms and dance up sunflowers. But that was long ago, before a curse drove the magic away. Twelve-year-old Felicity knows all about things like that; her nomadic mother is cursed with a wandering heart. But when she arrives in Midnight Gulch, Felicity thinks her luck's about to change. A "word collector," Felicity sees words everywhere---shining above strangers, tucked into church eves, and tangled up her dog's floppy ears---but Midnight Gulch is the first place she's ever seen the word "home." And then there's Jonah, a mysterious, spiky-haired do-gooder who shimmers with words Felicity's never seen before, words that make Felicity's heart beat a little faster. Felicity wants to stay in Midnight Gulch more than anything, but first, she'll need to figure out how to bring back the magic, breaking the spell that's been cast over the town . . . and her mother's broken heart.

It‘s just not summer without a Natalie Lloyd tale full of magic. And this one includes *gasp* mermaids! 🧜‍♀️ Wild child Eliza and her kooky grandmother are on a quest: to find the secret Siren‘s Harbor on the winter solstice, when the mermaids appear and sing their song. Maybe we‘re all just looking for our “better than forever”. So much love for this beautiful story!

There‘s no entry for Silverswift, Natalie Lloyd‘s mermaid tale, but it‘s delightful!

I adored this little book. It‘s a little like Holes, with an old family curse that needs to be resolved, but the way the author weaves the story is truly magical. A great story for elementary/middle grade level, but anyone can read and enjoy this one. And, it‘s my #doublespin for January!

kspenmoll I had a student gobble this whole series up- she “did not want to read”, but these books worked like a charm! (edited) 3y
TheAromaofBooks I remember loving this when I read it several years ago!! @kspenmoll - I didn't realize it was a series now - I will have to check that out!! 3y

Blizzard read number two. Even in the first few pages, I already love the writing. I posted a few days ago about Natalie Lloyd‘s upcoming book, but wow I just love her style, especially for middle grade novels.

November #bookspin #doublespin

Generally, November is a busy month and my reading tends to take a hit. So to keep it simple I just took a picture of the first 20 books on my mg fiction tbr pile.

Bookwormjillk I loved The War That Saved My Life 4y
Clwojick The phantom tollbooth is an all time favourite 🖤♥️🤍 4y

Found a quick, magical book to escape with for the weekend. Has been on my TBR pile for a while now...

JanuarieTimewalker13 If you‘re a tea drinker, you‘re ahead of the game. Tea builds your immune system. Stay well🌻 5y
katy4peas @JanuarieTimewalker13 Yes, I most definitely am! I only drink tea and water and maybe a lemonade once in a while. 5y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Excellent. Try not to drink tea with meals, however. The tannins block the absorption of iron. For me it‘s a good thing, but for others, not so much. Space tea drinking out at least an hour from meals. 5y

JanuarieTimewalker13 Please note, I‘m not a medical professional, but I have Beta Thalassemia Major and although we are severely anemic, we are iron overloaded from transfusions. I know it sounds weird to be anemic and iron overloaded, but that‘s the way it is (edited) 5y
katy4peas @JanuarieTimewalker13 Oh wow. I hope you are staying well during this crazy time! 5y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Yes! Thank you! I kind of think anyone with a chronic or genetic illness is used to being careful. I don‘t have a spleen or tonsils, so it‘s pretty scary. However, I haven‘t left the house in 4 days, so I‘m not worried, I will have to go grocery shopping at some point but I will wear gloves and stay far away from people. Lol. I‘m so thankful it isn‘t blood borne. Because I can‘t avoid getting blood. Stay well❤️ this too shall pass🦋 5y

#WitchyReads Day 8: This book found me at a time I needed to believe in #PracticalMagic, no matter if it is only a chortle, a chuckle, a snicker. Felicity Pickle is a word catcher. She sees them sparkle around people‘s intakes of breath, furrowed brows, lonely smiles. The invisible yet twinkling words betray each person‘s every wish or dream. She even sees them perched on people‘s shoulders. My full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-7Sb

A Snicker of Magic by Natalie Lloyd is a high fantasy novel. It is a quick read with lots of different aspects that children can relate to. Family problems, moving to a new school and town and even having a snicker of magic, all make this book amazing and relatable. Discussion questions for lit circles https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/discussion-que... #ucflae3414sp17

This low fantasy novel follows Felicity, her mom, her little sister, and their dog after they move to a once magical town called Midnight Gulch. Felicity starts a new school and feels out of place, but during her time here she grows more confident in herself, her family, and her powers. This book is well suited for intermediate grades or higher level primary students! Natalie's bio and teacher resources can be found at http://www.natalielloyd.com

DrSpalding I believe this was a sunshine state young reader award book. If the town doesn't exist, wouldn't it be high fantasy? 8y
krystag I've never seen this book before! The cover is very interesting and one that would grab my attention! I love fantasy books so I will definitely have to add this to my list. Especially if is is a sunshine state young reader! 8y
christinathorpe correction, yes it would be high fantasy! 8y

This book is a wonderful story about family, friendship, and magic. I really enjoyed this story about a family trying to find their home in the southern town of Midnight Gulch! I loved how each character in the story had something important to contribute. I highly recommend this book especially on audio.

There is always Scout as #childprotagonist, but I am choosing Felicity Pickle - she has magic; she sees words everywhere. She on a quest to restore magic to Midnight Gulch so her mother can stop her wandering...and they can be home. There is a curse, wizards, magic, a contest- an enticing book- enjoyed reading this with students this summer. #photoadaynov16 @RealLifeReading

Love is stronger than any curse. Felicity learns all about magic and curses and home when her family returns to her mother's birthplace of Midnight Gulch, a town that used to have magic. With the help of the townspeople she must convince her mother that they should stay. Splendifferous story!
