Impossible Views of the World
Impossible Views of the World | Lucy Ives
15 posts | 18 read | 29 to read
A witty, urbane, and sometimes shocking debut novel, set in a hallowed New York museum, in which a co-worker's disappearance and a mysterious map change a life forever Stella Krakus, a curator at Manhattan's renowned Central Museum of Art, is having the roughest week in approximately ever. Her soon-to-be ex-husband (the perfectly awful Whit Ghiscolmbe) is stalking her, a workplace romance with "a fascinating, hyper-rational narcissist" is in freefall, and a beloved colleague, Paul, has gone missing. Strange things are afoot: CeMArt's current exhibit is sponsored by a Belgian multinational that wants to take over the world's water supply, she unwittingly stars in a viral video that's making the rounds, and her mother--the imperious, impossibly glamorous Caro--wants to have lunch. It's almost more than she can overanalyze. But the appearance of a mysterious map, depicting a 19th-century utopian settlement, sends Stella--a dogged expert in American graphics and fluidomanie (don't ask)--on an all-consuming research mission. As she teases out the links between a haunting poem, several unusual novels, a counterfeiting scheme, and one of the museum's colorful early benefactors, she discovers the unbearable secret that Paul's been keeping, and charts a course out of the chaos of her own life. Pulsing with neurotic humor and dagger-sharp prose, Impossible Views of the World is a dazzling debut novel about how to make it through your early thirties with your brain and heart intact. From the Hardcover edition.

In this story we meet Panda, the store cat, than one day get switched. Then the story changes to another store cat. We also get the writer‘s reflection on this.

This book is terrible. I gave it 150 pages. It‘s pretentious and confusing. The characters are one-dimensional. I tried to finish it because I paid full price for it, but I‘m going to consider it a donation to a beloved indie. Don‘t let the gorgeous cover fool you!

Leftcoastzen I completely understand, sometimes you wonder how some books get published.Life is too short . 5y
Megabooks @Leftcoastzen I figure I‘m due a dnf because I haven‘t had one in awhile. I just could not get in sync with this one. You‘re right, life is too short!! 5y

New day, new book.

The cover is very purple, so I decided to go with purple beaker bookmark. I bought this book on a whim at an indie bookstore two years ago, so we‘ll see if I like it!

Lreads Cute bookmark! ☺️ 5y
BooknerdsLife Love that bookmark 💜 Happy reading 🤗 5y
Megabooks @QuietlyLaura Thanks!! 😊😊 5y

Megabooks @BooknerdsLife Thank you!! 👍🏻 I hope I enjoy the book! So far, I‘m having trouble getting the rhythm of the writing. (edited) 5y
BooknerdsLife @Megabooks Awww that‘s a shame 😬 Hope it will get better soon 🤞🏼😊 5y
Megabooks @BooknerdsLife I think it might. The story seems comic, which is a nice break from all the serious books I‘ve been reading! 5y
BooknerdsLife @Megabooks I just read the blurb of the book and it sounds very interesting indeed! 😊💖 5y

Cover: gorgeous. Writing: dreadfully pretentious and R A M B L I N G. It took me several attempts to meander my way through 8 pages, at which point I gave up. I could barely even summarize what happened in those 8 pages...so many meandering diatribes that were so full of trying-too-hard descriptions, it's difficult to stay connected. I felt my eyes glazing over like in the days of old, when forced to read a particularly draggy textbook.

#TBRtemptation post 4! Recently released. I like this cover! Stella, a curator at Manhattan's Central Museum of Art, has her soon-to-be ex-husband stalking her, her workplace romance with a narcissist collapsing, and her colleague Paul missing. Amidst all this, a mysterious 19th-Century map appears, linking a poem, novels, and a counterfeiting scheme. She learns why Paul is missing. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Gnora That cover is on point!! 😍 7y

I wanted to love the book.... the premise seemed so good. It was just so.... boring. The characters were all rather drab, and the narrator would just go on and and on. There were parts that were interesting, but it just could not save it.

Mehso-so

This book is part mystery, part messy life being sorted out. The mystery part is fun. It starts with a map of an imaginary, world and leads to commonplace books, obscure 19th-century novels, utopian society pamphlets, and museum catalogues. The messy life being sorted out part is not fun. It includes office affairs, a difficult mother, jerky exes and general ineptitude.
If you like art and research, this book is ok. If you don't, don't bother

tpixie Sounds like I need to tear out 1/2 the book and read the other 1/2! (edited) 7y
merelybookish @tpixie Yes, I enjoy research and so found that part really fun. But I almost gave up in a few parts. The writing wasn't always awesome. 😐 7y
tpixie @merelybookish good job interpreting that mixed up post! ( Sounds like I need to tear out 1/2 the book and read the other 1/2!) I just discovered that I like historical novels and like looking up some of the historical facts in between the novel part. 7y

When a book's plot but some of the writing makes you cringe, do you give up or soldier on? 😕

Reecaspieces Give up usually. Too many good books out there I have not read 7y
SpeculativeFemale I usually soldier on. I'm all about the story. I can put up with some pretty bad writing if it's a good story. 7y
Rachel.Rencher Depends on how bad... for me, poor writing usually makes the plot not enjoyable. 7y

ValerieAndBooks I give up on the book if the writing is bad, but sometimes check the ending! 7y
irregularreader Ugh this just happened to me. I soldiered on and it wound up being okay. . . Until the ending. I actually fell off the couch I was rolling my eyes so hard 7y
merelybookish @Reecaspieces @SpeculativeFemale @Rachel.Rencher @ValerieAndBooks @irregularreader Thanks everyone for weighing in! This book is set in an art museum so some of it is really interesting but the relationships and dialogue are 🙄. I think I'll give it another chapter or so. 7y

Hey guys! I think that's the longest streak I've ever gone without posting. Lately I've been going through some rough life stuff, a surge of depression, and a lot of busyness! This last weekend I got to sit in this hammock overlooking the MN River Valley and realized I need to have more time to just be. So hopefully I'll be around more as I leave more space on my calendar for reading for fun (:

RanaElizabeth Ugh, sorry life got a hold of you. But glad to hear you got a recharge, and in a hammock! Always take time for and care of yourself! 8y

A mystery in an art museum?! Sounds like perfect travel reading.

(Do you ever remember trips because of the books you were reading? I remember reading The Kind Worth Killing on a flight from Denver and hoping Evie would stay quiet just a little bit longer so I could keep reading.)
