From the New York Times bestselling author of 99 Days and How to Love comes a stunning new contemporary novel--all about boy bands, girl bands, best friends, and first love--perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen and Morgan Matson. It was always meant to be Olivia. She's the talented one, the one who's been training to be a star her whole life. Her best friend, Dana, is the levelheaded one, always on the sidelines, cheering Olivia on.But everything changes when Dana tags along with Olivia to Orlando for the weekend, where superproducer Guy Monroe is holding auditions for a new singing group, and Dana is discovered too. Dana, who's never sung more than Olivia's backup. Dana, who wasn't even looking for fame. Next thing she knows, she and Olivia are training to be pop stars, and Dana is falling for Alex, the earnest, endlessly talented boy who's destined to be the next big thing. It should be a dream come true, but as the days of grueling practice and constant competition take their toll, things between Olivia and Dana start to shift . . . and there's only room at the top for one girl. For Olivia, it's her chance at her dream. For Dana, it's a chance to escape a future that seems to be closing in on her. And for these lifelong best friends, it's the adventure of a lifetime--if they can make it through. Set in evocative 1990s Orlando, Fireworks brings to life the complexity of friendship, the excitement of first love, and the feeling of being on the verge of greatness.

It feels strange to label this book as historical fiction because it is set in the 1990s, my teenage era. It brought back so many memories of me and my best friend. Best friends are wonderful at loving and fighting and the book shows this nicely. No matter how mad you get at your best friend, you will always be loyal.

@Laughterhp this was my choice for fireworks on cover, but I didn't say anything because it is YA.

Laughterhp Oh thanks for letting me know! The book I was planning to read is super popular at the library, so I don‘t think I‘ll be seeing it anytime soon. 4y

I‘m not fluent in German, but this is an antique book about #fireworks that I got to see at the Linda Hall Science Library‘s archives. The coolest thing about the diagram pages is that they fold out, so you can quickly glance at them no matter where you are in the book as you read. #ReadingResolutions @Jess7

1. I don‘t have a particular guilty pleasure book or series, & I don‘t know that I feel very guilty about it, but I do enjoy the occasional contemporary YA romance (Stephanie Perkins, Jenn Bennett, Katie Cotugno, Sandhya Menon).
2. Any movie with Julia Stiles. Also, one of my favorite movies is “My Girl.” It makes me open-mouthed ugly-cry but I don‘t care. Ain‘t no shame in my emotional train wreck game.

monalyisha Thanks for the #tuesdaytidbits tag, @whippoorwill815 👋🏻! 6y
LazyDays I would watch My Girl almost every week growing up!💗💗 I Defenitly ugly cry!💔 6y
monalyisha @LazyDays “Vada” is my girl name, too (though I‘d spell it “Veda.” I also don‘t plan on having kids so I‘ll offer it up to anyone who asks!) 6y
Stacy_31 How can anyone not ugly-cry at My Girl?? 😭😭❤️ 6y

1. 4th pic on device: this teacher meme I relate to so hard. 😹
2. book I read this year I recommend: Fireworks by BOTM judge Katie Cotugno, a soapy YA novel about wannabe popstars in the 90s.
3. weather report: 🌧
4. current read: The Hot One by Carolyn Murnick
5. Labor Day weekend plans: Netflix, lesson plans, maybe some shopping.

It took me a hot (& cold) minute to decide if I'd be able to accept the romance in "Fireworks" but once I was in, I was in. I love Katie Cotugno. Her writing is witty & fresh; it feels modern without relying on language that will instantly date it. Her characters are...tricky. I love that the MC is traditionally pretty & doesn't fall into the "doesn't know her own beauty" trope. & that ending! I won't give any details away, but I'm still pissed.

suvata Awwww! 🕶 7y
Ellechim Believe me, you're not the only one that's mad about the ending. Didn't hate it tho. Don't get me wrong. But it actually made me mad. 7y

This one is a good summer read. It was really sweet and I found that I had a lot in common with Dana. She can be stubborn some times and, what she likes to call it, "realistic" (I call it like that too). I always like to read stories like this in summer. Overall, it was good.

"I hate indoor pools," she said..."It's like being inside somebody's mouth."

I can't say that I agree... but this killed me. ???

BookishGirl06 lol what. I'd love to have an indoor pool lol 7y
monalyisha @BookishGirl06 Haha. I mean, I'm sure the character was referring to a much less pretty, much less private pool... like a YMCA pool or a Holiday Inn pool. But I couldn't resist the beautiful picture. 😉 7y
BookishGirl06 @monalyisha true. I didn't even think of a public pool lol 7y

So... I've been eyeing this one for a bit. I've seen it so much in my Instagram feed that I decided to give it a try. 👀

Nadineisreading Please let me know how it is! I liked "How to Love" but did not enjoy "99 Days"! 7y

pretty entertaining, soapy YA novel about two friends trying to make it in the late 90's Orlando pop music machine. so many Britney, Christina, BSB, and *NSYNC flashback feels. 💜 #ya

I really enjoyed this YA book about two best friends trying to become pop stars in the 90s. Now I'm on to reviewing my lecture notes for a class I haven't taught in two years. Definitely not as fun.

Dang you, Costco! #impulsebuy

Reviewsbylola I try to order Costco online to avoid this. 😂 7y
Kris10 @Reviewsbylola Good idea! Although I would think they might have an ever bigger selection online... must not look! 7y
Reviewsbylola I actually have checked before and there website has never had books (that I've seen), nor have I ever been able to buy books when I ordered Costco thru instacart. Thank god! 7y
Kris10 @Reviewsbylola that makes my wallet happy but hurts my heart a little. You can buy a coffin on their website but not a book?! 7y

So I am half way through this book and officially OBSESSED with it! I never knew how badly I wanted to read a book about a 1997 pop girl group in Orlando. Just reliving my childhood over here with my latest favorite book.

Set in '97 about girl groups, boy bands, first love, and best friends. I'm honestly a sucker for 90s pop music and always wanted to join a girl group despite my lack of talent so this was a must read. This book makes me want to join a girl group now and fulfill those dreams.

monalyisha Totes started a girl group with my friends (forget that none of us were musically-inclined) called "Azalea." 7y
Jwatt6 @monalyisha umm my friends and I started a band called Other Line like 10 years ago also with no musical talent, and we still reference it today. 7y
monalyisha Oh yeah! This was probably about 20 years ago at this point. ??My friend thoughtfully sang lyrics to Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" & managed to convince me that she'd come up with it all on her own. I thought we were gonna be so rich. ?Haha. 7y
