Haunting and atmospheric, The End of Temperance Dare is another thrilling page-turner from the author reviewers are calling the Queen of the Northern Gothic. When Eleanor Harper becomes the director of a renowned artists retreat, she knows nothing of Cliffside Manors dark past as a tuberculosis sanatorium, a waiting room for death. After years of covering murder and violence as a crime reporter, Eleanor hopes that being around artists and writers in this new job will be a peaceful retreat for her as much as for them. But from her first fog-filled moments on the manors grounds, Eleanor is seized by a sense of impending doom and realizes theres more to the institution than its reputation of being a haven for creativity. After the arrival of the new fellows'including the intriguing, handsome photographer Richard Banks'she begins to suspect that her predecessor chose the group with a dangerous purpose in mind. As the chilling mysteries of Cliffside Manor unravel and the eerie sins of the past are exposed, Eleanor must fight to save the fellowsand herselffrom sinister forces.

A sanatorium was built for tb pts by Mr. Dare. Closed in 1952 with one of Mr. Dare‘s daughters as tb victim. Place was renovated as a temporary retirement for writers and artists. In present time, Penelope, decides to retire and chose Eleonor as director of this place but something happened to her & things started to happen to Eleanor and to the group that was visiting Cliffside. Are all these things connected?A ghost/mild creepy story 3.8⭐️

Gissy I liked this story even when it has some cheesy expected scenes. It was like seeing an old ghost/evil possession movie. I think it would be a good adaptation movie. This is one of my #2021goals reas books that have been in my tbr forever. This box was received on October 2017😲

I would say “borrow.” It is a fascinating book and a quick read, but the last 1/3 seemed a bit rushed. Still...I can‘t get it out of my head.

For the most part, I enjoyed the story, but it wasn‘t the book I thought I was getting when I read the description and borrowed it. The premise is intriguing. The climax is pretty dark. I‘m happy to answer questions but don‘t want to give anything away! This was my first book by this author. I‘m rating it a “pick,” but I don‘t know that I would read similar books in the future. Not quite my cup of ☕️.

RaimeyGallant Nice review. :) 5y

"What I did not know then, but do now, is that something wicked was indeed wending its way into my life, only I was too caught up in my own to notice."

Yes! A little spooky interlude for these last days of October. Finally able to get back to this after finishing my library book.

Juliet approves of my creepy stack! The End of Temperance Dare is a great, spooky gothic read, perfect for fans of Barbara Michaels, Simone St. James, and Amanda Stevens. Eleanor has just taken over as director of an artist retreat, and her first session is about to go horribly wrong. It doesn't help that the retreat is an old TB sanitarium. Wendy's books are just spooky fun. So glad she finally has a new one.

This book was very much on my wheelhouse (modern day Gothic ghost story) and I can't tell if it was my mood or the book, but I couldn't quite get into it. (Honestly though, I think it was the book.)
