It took me a whole month to finished this story about sick young man and his contemplation about world, death, love, literature, history, society, time .... very philosophical, many ideas, written in lush, rich language, but for me it wasn‘t just too plotless (and I usually like plotless stories), but it was also very cold, soulless story.
I finished only first part, but I‘m totally counting it as finished prompt for #ReadAroundTheWorld #Germany

BarbaraBB It meanders on and on, I know what you mean! 1mo
Simona @BarbaraBB I usually have ‘sitzleder‘ for stories like this, but I couldn‘t read more than 10 pages in one sitting and I felt exhausted ... I just need some rest from it, before I start second part. 1mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Confusing and frustrating? Sometimes. Thought provoking and magnificent? Always!! This is a fabulous book that is well worth your reading time. It took me six weeks to get through it, and now I will go back and try to make sense of my notes. This is a book that one could read multiple times and get something different out of it each time. @Lcsmcat Thanks for reading with me!! #2020classics

See All 6 Comments
SharonGoforth @HardcoverHearts It is!! I‘ve spent the past 30 minutes trying to figure out what Mann means! This hasn‘t been an easy read, but I‘ve managed to hang in there until I read this! I‘ll just move along and hopefully it will make sense! 4mo
Lcsmcat I just took this as nonsense spouted by the believers of the séance. Hans was constantly buffeted by ideas, from Dr. K, Settembrini, Naphtha, even Peeperkorn. And he didn‘t get most of them, he was just swept away on the tide of talk. So I felt like Mann was putting the reader in Hans‘ shoes with this kind of sentence. ??‍♀️ 4mo
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat He certainly did a good job of that! That was Dr. K‘s nonsense, from one of his lectures. Peeperkorn was interesting in that he said a lot without actually saying anything. It seems that Mann liked to use the different characters as representatives of specific philosophical ideas he was exploring. 4mo

@Lcsmcat Linda, just a heads-up - I was looking ahead to see how long Chapter 5 is, and discovered that in the Lowe-Porter translation, there are pages of conversation between Hans and Frau Chauchat that are in French!! Just wanted to mention it in case you‘re like me and don‘t read French 😱😱. I did some checking, and the John Woods translation is in English. I found it on Kindle for $1.99. #magicmountain

Lcsmcat Thanks! I do read French, but it‘s good to be prepared. I just got through all the “science” of creation and organic vs inorganic matter. First, do you think Mann believed all that? And second, OMG, even with my limited scientific background I was appalled. 5mo
Lcsmcat I picked up the eBook also, but because it‘s so windy here that I can‘t read a paper book outside on the deck. So I‘m going back and forth. 5mo
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat I felt like I sat through a 3 day A&P lecture!! I‘m wondering how much of it was driven by the knowledge available at the time he wrote it, or if it was his way of setting up a change in Hans‘ philosophical beliefs (because of Settembrini‘s influence)? I liked the “atom as a universe” description. 5mo
See All 6 Comments
Lcsmcat Have you gotten this far yet? Because both my hard copy and the eBook had this section in French. I‘m curious whether you found a translation that put it in English. 5mo
SharonGoforth @Lcsmcat I realized last night after I posted, that they are both the same translation, even though Kindle says it is the Woods translation. So I wound up ordering the paperback of the Everyman‘s Library edition, which is supposed to be Woods. Should arrive tomorrow. I‘m at page 295, so not quite to the French part yet. 5mo

Something between a PICK and a SO-SO i think i will have to let this one settle a little. I really enjoyed the language and setting. Constructed as a clash of intellectual concepts at a pivotal time in european history, it did feel a little instringend at times. I'll definately be looking up some background info, for i'm sure i either(probably) didn't fully get it OR there really were some overshot efforts made that could have been edited better..

This book is still one of my favorites after 17 years since first reading. I recommend this especially to young readers because it is likely the first time one will encounter a lot of the ideas and concepts discussed at length. This was an extremely formative book for me as a high school student and I still carry a fondness for it all these years later and upon re-reads.

So finally I finished this chunkster. As you see on the left it took really a lot of time to finish it. I liked the idea of magic mountain, it's setting and the relationships between the different kinds of characters but I couldn't deal with the discussions. I know, this is one of the main parts of the book, but I seem to be to dump to understand and appreciate them. 🤔 So it was the 6th book for my #litsyclassics. Hope the next one is easier. 🙈

Lcsmcat I bailed on this one a few decades ago, and I read a lot of classics and older books. I may try again, but it just may not be for me. 2y

So after I spend hours looking for items for #janeaustenswap and a bit for #conandoyleswap, I finally find some rest. 😕 I am always irritated how much the postage differs at Etsy. 😕

Sophoclessweetheart The postage on Etsy is crazy sometimes. Luckily I only grabbed one Jane Austen swap gift from there xx 2y
Sarah83 @Wanderingwithwords Living in Germany is quite frustrating for bookswaps. 😪 All the things I like are produced in England or sometimes in the US 2y
Sophoclessweetheart I‘m from England and try to buy only from there but I buy a lot from Ireland/Eastern Europe on Etsy too. I like so many things from the US but I only strictly allow myself to buy from two Etsy US stores because shipping to the U.K. is (c8-15. ? 2y
See All 15 Comments
Sarah83 @Wanderingwithwords sometimes I really things, they sign the prices low for the items, so you want to buy them and extra money they get with the postage. One seller in Italy really took 20 dollars for postage... But as the Litten wanted something special. The fact is the items aren't so heavy so I don't understand the postage 2y
Sophoclessweetheart I find some of the sellers do it to make a profit whilst still selling the item “cheap”. But a lot of it is to do with local postal prices , like, to send a letter to the US from the U.K. costs Qc.50, for just a letter and two sheets of paper! It‘s ridiculous. 2y
Sarah83 @Wanderingwithwords that's really expensive. 😕 So I hope, I have all the things I wanted to have. 😉 I don't think, I want to pay any more postage. 😂 2y
Melissa_J I find this, too, and it drives me crazy! I won‘t pay more for shipping than an item is worth. That seems silly to me. 2y
Sarah83 @Melissa_J the problem is in Germany there aren't so beautiful bookish items. 🤷 2y
Melissa_J Same here in Canada. Most of the really creative stuff is from the US or UK 😕 2y
Sarah83 @Melissa_J pretty sad. 😕 2y
batsy @Sarah83 @Melissa_J @Wanderingwithwords This is the same problem I have. Very little bookish swag stuff in Malaysia, and all the online shops are based in UK or US. The cost of the items itself are quite high after converting to local currency, and the shipping is astronomical. That's why I opted out of Jane Austen swap :( Would cost a fortune even for simple page flags from Etsy! 2y
Sarah83 @batsy so sorry to hear that. 😫 2y
Sophoclessweetheart @batsy That‘s unfortunate. I can‘t understand why it‘s so expensive. Couldn‘t get much further away than China from the U.K. but it‘s usually free to order from there... yet to order from say, Ireland - which is practically attached its like (cd! What‘s that about? Ridiculous. 2y
batsy Honestly, it's so perplexing and weird. Is it a matter of different taxes implemented 🤷🏽‍♀️ 2y
Sarah83 @batsy @Wanderingwithwords Definitely not nice for bookworms. 😫 2y

Slowly, really slowly, I read this book... If I wasn't as stolid as I am, I would put the book on my 'to sell' haul... 😫

azulaco It‘s on my shelf too. I bought it in hard copy because I fully expect this to be a long, slow read, with frequent breaks. You need time for a book like this, and the ability to flip back easily to previous passages, maybe even to annotate the margins. Soldier on. 2y
Sarah83 @azulaco you are quite right. 😉 2y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook Never did finish this one... Good luck! 2y

Ole It‘s some years ago that I read it. But I do remember it as a long drag 😉 2y
Sarah83 @MommyWantsToReadHerBook I hope, I will manage it. 🤔 2y
Sarah83 @Ole you are so right. 😊 2y
BarbaraBB I loved it and hated it. So little happened but I still think of it and remember the book vividly - better than most other books! 2y
JazzFeathers Is it that heavy-going? 😲 2y
Sarah83 @BarbaraBB @JazzFeathers yes. The whole story itself is pretty nice, but the discussions about history, religion and politics are really boring... 😒 2y
Buechersuechtling I command you my respect. Even if it‘s a „classic“ or so-called „high literarture“ I would never get the idea to read it. I will be fully satisfied with reading the „Wikipedia“ entry. 🙊 Worth admiring that you work your way through. 2y
Sarah83 @Buechersuechtling I read 'Buddenbrooks' several years ago and loved it. Even 'Tonio Kröger' was better than this one. 🙈 2y
Gissy @Sarah83 In PR an on Sunday, one tv channel presents old fairy tales filmed in Germany. They are very old because the quality of colors are poor but I really enjoy them🤷🏻‍♀️They are translated in Spanish but songs continue in German language. When I see things from other countries now I think in my Litsy friends from those countries.🤗 2y
Sarah83 @Gissy sounds pretty cool. 😊 Which films have you already seen? 😊 2y
Gissy @Sarah83 they had shown different fairy or classic stories like Snow White, White Rose and Red Rose sisters, Little Red Riding hood, today was an adaptation of Gold Curls is that they way it is translated. Also today there was another story but I could not catch the title but it was about a king obsessed with gold and asked for three hairs from the devil before a boy could marry his daughter. They are stories for children. 2y
Sarah83 @Gissy and mostly fairy tales, not the old movies with Heinz Rühmann for example. 😊 2y
Gissy @Sarah83 ohh there is also a story of a girl and her dragon. Your country is full of wonderful stories! ❤️ 2y

This book is so detailed and descriptive I want to read every chapter twice.

For the “nothing ever happens” readers, this book is not for you!!!

This book is for readers who live for dialogue & details & want to know what everyone is wearing, doing, and what they are for breakfast, second breakfast, lunch, tea, supper & snacks. This book is also for those who like philosophical discussions.

I highly recommend this translation.

BarbaraBB Great review. I loved this book too. 2y
Jinjer @BarbaraBB Great! I‘m only about 100 pages in. 2y
Readerann Loved this book many years ago. I may have to re-visit it with the new translation. 2y

This book is really driving me mad. So many descriptions and the story doesn't really move on.

But I read this passage yesterday about our favourite subject. I had a look in the internet and found the book online and you can get it for free as a PDF...

Well, I started this one at the beginning of the week for my #litsyclassics. I really hoped to get further, but I still have problems to get a connection to the subject.
The writing style is not my personal favourite and I still wish, it should be more like the 'Buddenbrooks'. #bookishproblems

Starting this #litsyclassics today, while little snowflakes tumbling down.

Lcsmcat I tried to read this when all those “Best books of the 20th century” lists came out and I ended up bailing. Maybe I should try it again now that I‘m not dealing with little kids and carpools. 2y
Sarah83 @Lcsmcat I read 'Buddenbrooks' only until now. I will have a look, how far I can deal with that bestie. 2y
