The Misfortune of Marion Palm
The Misfortune of Marion Palm | Emily Culliton
19 posts | 15 read | 22 to read
A wildly entertaining debut about a Brooklyn Heights wife and mother who has embezzled a small fortune from her children's private school and makes a run for it, leaving behind her trust fund poet husband, his maybe-secret lover, her two daughters, and a school board who will do anything to find her. Marion Palm prefers not to think of herself as a thief but rather "a woman who embezzles." Over the years she has managed to steal $180,000 from her daughters' private school, money that has paid for European vacations, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, and perpetually unused state-of-the-art exercise equipment. But, now, when the school faces an audit, Marion pulls piles of rubber-banded cash from their basement hiding places and flees, leaving her family to grapple with the baffled detectives, the irate school board, and the mother-shaped hole in their house. Told from the points of view of Nathan, Marion's husband, heir to a long-diminished family fortune; Ginny, Marion's teenage daughter who falls helplessly in love at the slightest provocation; Jane, Marion's youngest who is obsessed with a missing person of her own; and Marion herself, on the lam--and hiding in plain sight.

Book 2 of #reversereadathon #deweyjuly and it was a good #readathon book for the short chapters. A Brooklyn mom embezzles from her daughters' school and goes on the lam, hiding in plain sight when the school is audited. It's satirical in some ways. Fans of The Nest will enjoy this. 3 stars. @DeweysReadathon

Reaching book 2 deserves a snack. Also, I think this is going to be a good fit for a #readathon, because the chapters are about 2 pages long apiece. #reverseredathon #deweyjuly @DeweysReadathon #teatime #snack #tea #smores

#lmpbc @Schlinkles @TsundokuAleax 3 options for next round based on today's #bookhaul

Option 2: The Misfortune of Marion Palm by Emily Culliton

Whimsical.Curiosity Hi! What is #lmpbc? 6y
bookandcat @Whimsical.Curiosity it is Litsy Markup Postal Bookclub - you read a book and mark it up with margin notes and then mail it to the next person in your small book club group who marks it up themselves and mails it on etc. Eventually you read and markup the books everyone has picked out and then you get yours back at the end of the rotation, full of everyone's thoughts on the book 6y
Schlinkles The synopsis of this one sounds entertaining. 6y
TsundokuAleax I am not that intrigued by this one but it has possibilities 6y

Just started this. I am annoyed by two things: microchapters & the rough edge of the book. I have a personal dislike of books with unfinished edges. The microchapters make me feel like I am watching a tennis match on 1.5x speed. #2018 #bookclub #noveldiscussions

Why I read...
Why would anyone DO this? More specifically, my desire to sit and read in peace is greater than my desire to find one of my kids and ask "wtf?'

For a book that I waited quite a while for through the holds at my library, this didn‘t live up to the wait or hype. This debut novel is about Marion Palm who embezzles from her daughters‘ school and then takes off. That‘s about the sum of it. The story plot was bland and the characters were very one dimensional. The one thing I can say it was a quick read. #supportyourlocallibrary

This multi-perspective novel was a highly entertaining read.

After the intensity of my last book it‘s back to our ‘previously scheduled programming‘ of Marion Palm...hopefully it will involve a lot less psychological torture and tension, especially if I ever plan to sleep tonight. Like my lazy cats and dog are doing quite noisily right now 😻#readathon

Ok, I‘ve got a #readathon stack! I won‘t get to all of them, but I‘ve already started two of them (#ThisDarknessMine and #StalkingJackTheRipper). I thought I would put in an indie press read, ‘Invoking Nonna‘, and ‘Sleepy Hollow‘ and other short stories by Washington Irving. I REALLY want to get started on #ThePower‘ from my #botm box! AND my ARC of ‘The Broken Girls‘! #deweys24hourreadathon

I read about this book in Entertainment Weekly. The synopsis makes me think of Where'd You Go Bernadette which I loved.

readingallthetime This is a slow moving book. It is not a funny book. 7y
readingallthetime This has to be the most boring book ever. I seriously fall asleep every time I pick it up. I will skim through it tonight. (edited) 7y

3.5: uneven with moments of humor and brilliance. It's short, but it took me over a week to read. I will eagerly read Culliton's next book. In some ways, it reminds me of how I felt about Maria Semple's first novel.

#TBRtemptation post 6! #BEA17 edition! Slated for an early August release. This book's premise sounds very interesting. A Brooklyn Heights wife and mom who's embezzled a fortune from her kids' private school flees, leaving behind her trust fund poet husband, his maybe-secret lover, their 2 daughters, detectives, & a furious school board. Told from the perspectives of Marion, her husband Nathan, & the girls Ginny & Jane. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
