The Midwife Trilogy
The Midwife Trilogy | Jennifer Worth
This omnibus edition of Call the Midwife, Shadows of the Workhouse and Farewell to the East End chronicles Jennifer Worth's career as a midwife from start to finish, from her arrival in the war-scarred Docklands as a wide-eyed trainee, to the demolition of the tenements and subsequent closure of Nonnatus House. It provides a fascinating snapshot of social history, documenting the East End in the days when there was a real sense of community, when times were tough but there was plenty of good humour and neighbourly support to help the inhabitants through the harsh econonic climate. The book also enables readers to follow Jennifer's personal story, as she discovers the amazing resilience of a population still bearing the scars of war, and the vibrant community of nuns with whom she lives and who teach her the skills of midwifery. In stories that are funny, disturbing and moving in equal measure, we meet prostitutes and abortionists, bigamists and mischievous nuns, and see Jennifer earn the confidence of people whose lives are often stranger than fiction.

Book 1 of the Call the Midwife series. I liked my first try at the trilogy, especially the background information in the late 19th century/early 20th century. I did not realize there was such a high mortality rate for birthing moms and their newborns. Has anyone viewed the PBS Series?

paper.reveries I absolutely love the Netflix series; not sure if that's the same one you're mentioning. Advancements in medicine are an amazing thing! 2y

mrp27 I love the series. PBS is currently airing the 12th season but you can watch seasons 1-11 on Netflix. 2y

Dragon Love the BBC series - but I always cry at some point in every episode ( babies 👶 being born tugs at the heart) 💚🐉 2y
Dragon Season 12 is on PBS 2y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards The TV series is amazing! My then-grad-school roommate watched the first few seasons with me; as a former labor and delivery nurse, she was astonished at the medical accuracy. 2y
Eggs @Dragon oh I cry too - the great miracle, the spark of light 2y
Eggs @SaunteringVaguelyDownwards Oh, another endorsement for the series! I will finish the books, then watch the series. So timely, as I am expecting my 5th grandchild in mid September and I watched him/her (iPad sono.) using arms and legs so clearly today, floating in the womb. Amazing 💗💗 2y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 2y
Dragon Agreed @eggs - congratulations on your upcoming 5 th grand-miracle 👼 2y

Compelling—and often really horribly graphic—memoir of a 1950s midwife in the poverty-stricken conditions of East London. While oftentimes judgy toward the people in the neighborhood, it was also fascinating. (No, I haven‘t really watched the show. Maybe one episode many years ago.) I would have liked some photos and also some more of Jennifer‘s backstory. She hints at a heartbreaking romance, but maybe she saved that for later memoirs.

Beautiful and yet brutal, this series is a rare window into the past from the point of view of women who saw and dealt with it all: birth, death, disease, war, family, love, sacrifice, govt sanctioned abuse, poverty, illegal abortion. As a birth doula, I was impressed with how the complicated births were handled in pretty extreme situations. The stories are told with both stark honesty and unending compassion. (Do not read if pregnant, IMO.)

My favourite genre was an easy choice! At the moment it is non-fiction involving human rights, personal stories and equality. 📚 #ReadingResolutions

What could be more full of #Life than Call The Midwife by Jennifer Worth?

Chronicling her experiences as a midwife in the 1950s, she is part of the lives of many of her patients, and helps to bring many new lives into the world 💕
