The Secret History of Jane Eyre: How Charlotte Bront Wrote Her Masterpiece
The Secret History of Jane Eyre: How Charlotte Bront Wrote Her Masterpiece | John Pfordresher
15 posts | 4 read | 31 to read
The surprising hidden history behind Charlotte Bronts Jane Eyre. Why did Charlotte Bront go to such great lengths on the publication of her acclaimed, best-selling novel, Jane Eyre, to conceal its authorship from her family, close friends, and the press? In The Secret History of Jane Eyre, John Pfordresher tells the enthralling story of Bronts compulsion to write her masterpiece and why she then turned around and vehemently disavowed it. Few people know how quickly Bront composed Jane Eyre. Nor do many know that she wrote it during a devastating and anxious period in her life. Thwarted in her passionate, secret, and forbidden love for a married man, she found herself living in a home suddenly imperiled by the fact that her father, a minister, the sole support of the family, was on the brink of blindness. After his hasty operation, as she nursed him in an isolated apartment kept dark to help him heal his eyes, Bront began writing Jane Eyre, an invigorating romance that, despite her own fears and sorrows, gives voice to a powerfully rebellious and ultimately optimistic womans spirit. The Secret History of Jane Eyre expands our understanding of both Jane Eyre and the inner life of its notoriously private author. Pfordresher connects the people Bront knew and the events she lived to the characters and story in the novel, and he explores how her fecund imagination used her inner life to shape one of the worlds most popular novels. By aligning his insights into Bronts life with the timeless characters, harrowing plot, and forbidden romance of Jane Eyre, Pfordresher reveals the remarkable parallels between one of literatures most beloved heroines and her passionate creator, and arrives at a new understanding of Bronts brilliant, immersive genius.

First #bookhaul of 2021! I confess that I haven't actually read Jane Eyre (yet!!), but the tagged book sounded very interesting. I don't read a lot of nonfiction; I'm more of a documentary person, but every now and then I come across a good one. The Widows caught my eye because it's based on Ohio's first female sheriff. Also, slowly building my Paula Brackston collection! #2021bookhaul #usedbooks #halfpricedbooks #historicalfiction #nonfiction

The insight into Charlotte Bronte and how and why she created her iconic characters was fascinating. However, I thought the author sometimes drew conclusions that were a bit of a stretch and stated them as fact. I agree with him that Jane Eyre is, if not whole at least a partial autobiographical account of Bronte's life.

Overall, very insightful and when I read Jane Eyre again I will read it a little differently.

Sarah83 @Heideschrampf do you know this one? 6y
Heideschrampf @Sarah83 not yet, so thank you for thinking of me! 6y

Mr. Rochester, you either love him or hate him.

"Significantly, Mr. Rochester embodies aspects of each one of these persons, and, in weaving them together, Bronte creates her own romantic hero."

Who are these persons? Bronte's father, brother, dark and immoral Zamorna (a created character), a married man she fell in love with, and even Satan himself.

It makes Rochester even more fascinating than ever.

JoRead I can't say that I hate him but I never found him appealing either. 6y
Wife I kinda fell for him 🖤 6y

Jane Eyre is one of my all time favorite books. This look into the making of it proves interesting. First page shows a picture of chapter one in Bronte's handwriting.

Pfordresher sets out to prove his theory that Bronte bases Jane Eyre on her life experiences, and those of family members and other fictional characters. knew many of the details presented in this book, but I give it a pick overall. Starts out a little slow, but Pfordresher gathers momentum as he delves deeper into Bronte's life. I will say he draws interesting conclusions on the model(s) for Rochester. Jane Eyre fans...take note!

Charlotte Bronte sent a couple pieces to Robert Southey, poet laureate, in 1836. His response was less than positive...

Pfordresher contends that Jane Eyre is an autobiographical sketch of Charlotte; Charlotte writes what she knows when it comes to bad experiences and injustices. #exorciseyourdemons #hallowreads

Note: This is a #currentread , and I find the writing style a tad dry, more academic than what I thought it would be...not a bad thing, but unexpected to me, for some reason.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I found the beginning that way too and really struggled with the childhood years. After that though it really picked up for me. (edited) 7y
Librarybelle Oh good, @Riveted_Reader_Melissa ! I'm only about 50 pages into the book, I'm still on the early years. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Librarybelle Stick with it. I put it down somewhere in there and didn't pick it back up for months, and when I did found out I had actually been at the end of the childhood/school period, and then the rest flew for me. I remember thinking I set it aside too soon. 7y

Pfordresher's argument -- his 'secret history' -- is that Brontë mined her own life for Jane Eyre. (No duh.) But he pushes a literal person-for-person sort of equivalency that really disappointed me; while arguing for Brontë's creative genius, I couldn't help but feel like he was minimizing it in this manner. A slim read that ultimately disappointed. I don't feel I better understand the book or Bronte.

My first non-fic abt Charlotte Bronte and it's interesting but leans heavily on biography/Charlotte's life to interpret Jane Eyre. Seems both presumptuous and obvious in equal parts.
