The insight into Charlotte Bronte and how and why she created her iconic characters was fascinating. However, I thought the author sometimes drew conclusions that were a bit of a stretch and stated them as fact. I agree with him that Jane Eyre is, if not whole at least a partial autobiographical account of Bronte's life.

Overall, very insightful and when I read Jane Eyre again I will read it a little differently.

Mr. Rochester, you either love him or hate him.

"Significantly, Mr. Rochester embodies aspects of each one of these persons, and, in weaving them together, Bronte creates her own romantic hero."

Who are these persons? Bronte's father, brother, dark and immoral Zamorna (a created character), a married man she fell in love with, and even Satan himself.

It makes Rochester even more fascinating than ever.

Bronte was a little spitfire.

Jane Eyre is one of my all time favorite books. This look into the making of it proves interesting. First page shows a picture of chapter one in Bronte's handwriting.

Pfordresher sets out to prove his theory that Bronte bases Jane Eyre on her life experiences, and those of family members and other fictional characters. knew many of the details presented in this book, but I give it a pick overall. Starts out a little slow, but Pfordresher gathers momentum as he delves deeper into Bronte's life. I will say he draws interesting conclusions on the model(s) for Rochester. Jane Eyre fans...take note!

Charlotte Bronte sent a couple pieces to Robert Southey, poet laureate, in 1836. His response was less than positive...

Pfordresher contends that Jane Eyre is an autobiographical sketch of Charlotte; Charlotte writes what she knows when it comes to bad experiences and injustices. #exorciseyourdemons #hallowreads

Note: This is a #currentread , and I find the writing style a tad dry, more academic than what I thought it would be...not a bad thing, but unexpected to me, for some reason.

Back from retreat (Buddha camp) and starting a new job. Life feels hectic. Feeling like I have no time to read. 😔

I don't know what made me put this on hold at the library, it doesn't have great reviews on here or Goodreads...I'll just have to see for myself

I love anything #bronte and I am just geeking out over this book.

Pfordresher's argument -- his 'secret history' -- is that Brontë mined her own life for Jane Eyre. (No duh.) But he pushes a literal person-for-person sort of equivalency that really disappointed me; while arguing for Brontë's creative genius, I couldn't help but feel like he was minimizing it in this manner. A slim read that ultimately disappointed. I don't feel I better understand the book or Bronte.

I have a lot of #tbr books and don't really make a list per se of the order in which I read them. But, this one is on my radar and is being released later this month. Looking forward to this. #splashintosummerreads

My first non-fic abt Charlotte Bronte and it's interesting but leans heavily on biography/Charlotte's life to interpret Jane Eyre. Seems both presumptuous and obvious in equal parts.
