The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly
The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly | Stephanie Oakes
A hard-hitting and hopeful story about the dangers of blind faithand the power of having faith in yourself. Now a Morris Award finalist and Golden Kite Honor Book! The Kevinian cult has taken everything from seventeen-year-old Minnow: twelve years of her life, her family, her ability to trust. And when she rebelled, they took away her hands, too. Now their Prophet has been murdered and their camp set aflame, and it's clear that Minnow knows somethingbut she's not talking. As she languishes in juvenile detention, she struggles to un-learn everything she has been taught to believe, adjusting to a life behind bars and recounting the events that led up to her incarceration. But when an FBI detective approaches her about making a deal, Minnow sees she can have the freedom she always dreamed ofif shes willing to part with the terrible secrets of her past. Gorgeously written, breathlessly page-turning and sprinkled with moments of unexpected humor, this harrowing debut is perfect for readers of Emily Murdoch's If You Find Me and Nova Ren Suma's The Walls Around Us, as well as for fans of Orange is the New Black. From the Hardcover edition.

I was immediately drawn in by this book. Before I knew it I was halfway into it and could not put it down. I have not read anything like it before. BUT the ending left me with SO many questions. I like a neat, tidy, and definite ending. The ending still has me thinking (totally in a good way). Step up for others, question when something doesn‘t seem right.

Loved it! A young woman raised of the grid in the Kevinian Cult will question everything she's learned..... at a gruesome price. A solid read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “He watches me a moment, and I wonder if he can read in my expression that I will never tell him the truth. I‘ll give him a version of events, a half-truth, but I haven‘t told anyone what happened in those smoke-filled moments in January when I stood over the Prophet‘s body and watched him breathe his last ungodly breath. And I never will.”

As the Northern Hemisphere enter spring, down here in the Southern Hemisphere, we‘re heading into #autumn. It‘s my favorite time of year (not too hot and not too cold). I thought I‘d celebrate the new season with an underrated #ya #horrornovel! 🍂🍁 It is loosely based on a fairy tale, but it‘s dark and rich and definitely a book you should read with the lights on. 😊

Discovered the book because it is also a series on Facebook Watch. I'm not sure if I like the show or the book better because they were honestly both kind of cool. This story is an interesting take on cult and offers an interesting point of view from someone who doesn't at all understand the modern world.

This is a YA book about a teenage girl who escapes an isolated religious cult in the woods only to land in prison (that happens right at the beginning) where she learns about the “real world”. You then start to learn about her life in The Community and what led to her arrest. Goodreads says it is based in a Grimm fairytale called the Handless Maiden, but I have never heard of that. Entertaining read.

A good way to finish off the night. This book gave me subtle flashbacks to Allegedly by Tiffany Jackson (ie, what REALLY happened). Would recommend. #winenot #thesacredliesofminnowbly

“So how do you avoid becoming a moth?”
“You tell me,” I say.
“No.”
I look up. His face is shadowed against the light. “What?”
“That‘s how you avoid becoming a moth,” he says. “Stop asking others what to believe. Figure it out for yourself.”

I am loving this book so far. Also, with the current wait time at the car wash, I might be able to finish it soon? #carwashreads

This was beautifully written and intriguing. Despite a couple difficult-to-believe moments, I enjoyed it. Definitely dark, though you can tell that much just from the description.

This. Book.

One of the best I've read recently. It's definitely dark, and there were parts that made my stomach turn, but just an excellent book overall.

An interesting read.

Anticlimactic. Slow. It's like almost walking to the top of a mountain but not being able to get over it. I abandoned this book a few times over 2 weeks but had nothing else to read. I did want to know who dunnit but there wasn't really a resolution in the end.

This is a fantastic example of why I love stories and why I think the world would be a better place if more people read more books. We find ourselves through stories. They help us process emotions, gain understanding, and overcome fear. They help us work through love, grief, anger, ambivalence, and doubt. They help us feel connected at times when we feel alone or lost. Books don't just entertain; they ground us.

❝So that's why I'm deserving. Not because I need your help. But because I am going to make it with or without anybody's help.

5🌟

Oof. This was at times brutal and at times weirdly uplifting. It was slower paced than you might think (given the subject and especially given the way it opens), but I enjoyed that a lot. Much more character driven than plot driven but if that's your jam I highly recommend this!

Definitely a page-turner! I found myself gripped by the events unfolding and cheered for Minnow as she began to gain her independence, even while being held in a juvenile detention facility. If you enjoy books about cults or fringe religious practices, this may be a good fit. #LitsyAtoZ #LetterS

This book was fabulous. It's about a girl who gains the strength to go against everything she had once been taught to believe in and overcome the torture she has endured in order to create a new and better life for herself after committing a terrible act. It's fascinating and horrifying all at once. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book makes some amazing points about religion and the justice system. However, it wasn't as engaging as a read as I had hoped. It didn't really live up to the hype.

This YA mystery is the firsthand account of Minnow, a handless seventeen-year-old girl who has grown up in a cult. Minnow is arrested for assault on the night the cult community was burned to the ground and their prophet supposedly murdered... and Minnow knows something about it. This is probably my favorite book of this year and one that I recommend for anyone who is trying to become their own independent person.
