In her most incisive and insightful book yet, Wendelin Van Draanen, award-winning author of The Running Dream and Flipped, offers a remarkable portrait of a girl who has hit rock bottom, but begins a climb back to herself at a wilderness survival camp in the desert. 3:47 a.m. Thats when they come for Wren Clemmens. Shes hustled out of her house and into a waiting car, then a plane, and then taken on a forced march into the desert. This is what happens to kids whove gone so far off the rails, their parents dont know what to do with them anymore. This is wilderness therapy camp. Eight weeks of survivalist camping in the desert. Eight weeks to turn your life around. Yeah, right. The Wren who arrives in the Utah desert is angry and bitter, and blaming everyone but herself. But angry cant put up a tent. And bitter wont start a fire. Wrens going to have to admit she needs help if shes going to survive. Advance praise for Wild Bird: "I read Wild Bird in one long mesmerized gulp. Wren will break your heartand then mend it." Nancy Werlin, National Book Award finalist for The Rules of Survival Praise for Wendelin van Draanens The Running Dream: [An] accessible and inspirational novel. The Horn Book Magazine Readers will truly feel whats it like to walk (or run) a mile (or 10) in Jessicas shoes. Booklist Inspirational. The pace of Van Draanens prose matches Jessicas at her swiftest. Readers will zoom through the book just as Jessica blazes around the track. A lively and lovely story. Kirkus Reviews

I finished this book last night and I was such a good book. First book I‘ve read this school year and I found it an easy read. Although I set it down a few times because either it got boring or I was sick of it, it was still a great read.

absolutely loved this book. They way Wren describes her surroundings and life style while in the dessert is amazing. This book is definitely a great life skill book and I‘m very surprised but some of the things she had done. definitely a book I would read again later on.

I‘ve made it to chapter 20 in the book now. And I‘m really starting to like it more and more by each page. I can totally agree with Wren about feeling imprisoned when your at a camp. But I‘m starting to realize maybe wrens parents had a good reason to send her away. I‘m definitely bringing this one home to read over weekends as well.

I‘m only to chapter 14 in the book, but so far it‘s is a super well written book. The story is about a teenage girl that is taken from home and brought to a wildlife camp to help “straighten her up” the story has a good message with it and I‘m glad I grabbed this book off the shelf.

MrsBabki I agree! It is a really good book. Once I found out what she did, I was shocked or maybe disappointed in her is a better description. I am curious what you will think. 3y

Wren is sent to an 8 week camp in the wild Utah desert to learn to fight her addictions and come to grips with the anger issues she‘s been fighting for several years.

This is a great middle grade/ YA read. I was rooting for Wren and her co-campers the whole way through. It was easy to empathize with their struggles. 👍👍

Geemom1118 @GondorGirl Me too. I picked this up a few months ago from Ollie‘s for $1.99. When I got it I thought well if it isn‘t any good it is cheap. Pleasantly surprised 3y

Wild Bird is a book about Wren and her challenges in the desert on a therapy camp and in her past. I loved this book because of its story and the struggles of Wren and the campers. This book made me feel just how Wren felt and occasionally made me laugh out loud. I loved this book and would highly suggest it to someone who is looking for a great adventure fiction!

Wild bird was an old book I read when I was probably in grade 6. It‘s honestly really good. I‘m more into horrors and scary types of books but surprisingly this wild bird book got me really interested.

The girl named wren was at her biggest fault doing wrong things and making wrong decisions.

Honestly I recommend this book. I really enjoyed it in grade 6.

Hi I‘m Brooklyn. I am currently reading the book Wild Bird by Wendelin Van Draanen! I love it! It is a realistic fiction and It is about a Girl named Wren who‘s done very bad things. Her parents sent her away too a 8 week camp very far away. This book doesn‘t have anything really relatable too me but that‘s why I think I like it so much I‘ve read 100 pages so far in 1 week but I was very busy so I‘m going too try and finish it in the next week.

Wren Clemmens is one of those female characters I can look up to. I love following her story and relating with her. Another thing I absolutely adore about this book is the character development. And not just Wren‘s, all the characters. Everyone learns and bonds. You really grow with the characters. The ending was refreshing and happy, which I appreciated a lot. DEFINITELY recommend this book.

Wild Bird is an emotionally-packed story involving a family desperate to save one of its beloved. Tough love leads to self-realization, identity, and maturity as the main character, Wren, finds her wings to fly. This book touches on substance abuse, shopping lifting, tough friendships and mental health. #youngadultfiction

Wren, a teenager that has been taken to the desert so that she can learn how to handle her emotions. Wren struggles to make a fire so that she can move up from rabbit so that she can be with the other girls. Wild Bird is slow at first but picks up the pace as you get further into the book. I recommend this book to people who like suspense, mystery and adventure.

MissYaremcio Great work C.C.! Just remember to add a picture next time! 5y

Wild bird is about the main character, Wren. And how she survives in the dessert. She gets sent to a camp by her parents to help with her behaviour, hoping when she gets back it will all be better. She meets new people. Works through her problems. She learns how to survive in the dessert, how to start a fire and ect. By the end of the book you can really see how she's changed.

I loved reading about wrens journey and would recommend reading it.

MissYaremcio I love your summary of the book Anabelle! You really nailed what the story is about! Make sure that when you are doing the Litsy assignments that you are including all elements of the assignment (you were missing the picture and the tone)! 5y

This book is about Wren who gets taken away from her parents and is forced to go to the desert with a group of people called the coyotes. They have limited resources and have to preserve their rations for several weeks. Everyone has their own job to do throughout the day. This book deals with struggles every teenager would face. If you like adventure books, you will probably enjoy this piece. (I haven't finished the book yet)

MissYaremcio Great review Tak! Another book I think I shall read! I see now how you had formatted this, thanks for the heads up in class! 5y
MrsBabki I loved this book and was speechless when I found out what she did to get sent away. 5y

I've enjoyed this read. About a teen who decides to follow the wrong crowd and starts to make wrong choices. Parents are fed up and dont know what else to do, so they send her to a wilderness camp to hopefully help get her act together. It was a fun fast funny read.
4⭐⭐⭐⭐

GondorGirl I have a cousin who was sent to one of these camps when we were teenagers. She said the book was surprising accurate to her experience. 5y

Another recent YA audiobook that I really enjoyed.

Wren is a troubled teen whose parents have reached the end of their rope with her. She is sent off to a wilderness camp in #Utah to see if she can get herself together.

This is more a story about never giving up and realizing that no matter what mistakes you have made, take responsibility and start fresh. I definitely recommend this if you have an angsty teenager in your life.

February books read. One DNF. Two must-reads (Wild Bird and To Night Owl From Dogfish), four rereads, and the rest all had something to like, but ended up disappointing me somehow. Maybe March will be better in terms of more consistent quality.

What a story!

I can‘t decide what the best part of this book was, but I know I really enjoyed all its “layers,” the way it unfolded, how the past was revealed in bits and pieces. And it was a truly believable story, both the bad stuff and the good stuff. Setting and description – wonderful. Characterization – also wonderful, getting to know the protagonist and all the side characters was pitch perfect. Plot - mesmerizing!
