Sex Criminals Volume 3: Three the Hard Way
Sex Criminals Volume 3: Three the Hard Way | Matt Fraction
As seen on LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS! The Eisner- and Harvey-award winning raucous sex comedy that Time magazine called the Comic of the Year and Apple called "inappropriate for sale on iOS devices" returns in SEX CRIMINALS V3: THREE THE HARD WAY. So it turns out Jon and Suzie aren't alone other people around the world, like them, freeze time when they climax. A self-appointed group wants to regulate and control them through fear and intimidation. Jon and Suzie are falling in love and want their freak flags to fly, but if they're going to fight back they can't do it alone. And really, isn't that a metaphor for the whole series? That we might all be alone but we're all alone together? I think so. If you read only one comic with a semen-demon in it this year, please make it SEX CRIMINALS V3: THREE THE HARD WAY. I wouldn t trust most comic creators to turn a sexual awakening into compelling pulp fiction, but Fraction and Zdarsky pull it off masterfully. Paste Magazine"

The vagina tentacles in this volume terrified me to my very core. This series is so ridiculously weird.

Just incredible—funny, witty, SEXY, thoughtful, heartbreaking. Gotta get my hands on the fourth volume. [image: a copy of Sex Criminals, vol. 3, laying against a pillow on a bed.]

Murchie got soooooo embarrassed when I made him pose with SEX CRIMINALS. #murchieplusbooks

VanChocStrawberry Hahaha. I read the first volume, but I didn‘t like it as much as I was expecting to based on recs. You think it‘s worth continuing if I didn‘t love the first one? (edited) 7y
xicanti @VanChocStrawberry if you can get it from your library, I think it's worth checking out Vol 2. If you have to buy it, I wouldn't want to push you to go beyond Vol 1. I love the series and I do think they deepen the relationships as things roll along, but as far as I can remember the opening's a pretty good indicator of the series' overall tone. 7y

Well duh, of course the relief for my reading consternation is comics. Don't know why I didn't think of it before. 💭

vivastory I really need to check out this one! 7y

I think I might be done with this series. I loved the first volume felt okay about the second and with this one I just have no real desire to go further. I was excited about a lot of the ideas about sex and sexuality being represented but they are so buried in the d*ck jokes and I'm just over it. Also, there's an author self-insert section that they try to play off as cute and meta, but really it's just lazy; makes the creators seem over it too.

claffy_reads I haven't read this volume yet, but I totally agree with you about the downward trend. I wish a woman was involved with writing this, it would add a whole different dimension. 7y
everlocalwest @callielafleur Yeah, this one definitely needs to come to a close or get some fresh eyes. 7y

No idea what drew me to read this series tonight, but I appreciated the asexual character in this volume!

Hoopla doesn't have Vol. 2, so I missed some stuff between Vol. 1 and this one

This was a very interesting volume. Same type of humour throughout and fairly consistent in style and storyline from the previous two. I always enjoy searching for the little jokes in the background! This one, was also very meta, which made it both interesting and a little bit frustrating if I'm being honest. Still a good volume and good graphic novel run.

I'm so proud of my library for buying this - I thought they were too old fashioned 😂 it's been awhile since I read volume 1&2, and I found the narration style somewhat choppy as it moved between character POV but I was entertained. Also really enjoyed learning about the drawing process, and how Chip recruited the people that Suzie and Jon are based on.

This volume was way more meta than previous installments, almost annoyingly so. Almost. Still, I enjoy the hell out of this series. I really like the introduction of Alix and am interested to see what she and Doug are about in FL. I also like the changes Suze instigates. I look forward to volume 4.

RobinHoodReads I haven't caught up on volume 3 but I loved volumes 1 and 2! 8y
Eyelit @Prince_Of_Thieves interested to hear what you think when you do get to it. This one has way more breaking the fourth wall - it mostly works in its favor. And it's way more bananas than previous volumes, that's for sure 😃 8y
readordierachel I agree that they walked a fine line with those meta scenes, but I kinda loved it at the same time. 8y
silentrequiem I found that one meta conversation scene really annoying, personally... 8y

As far as plot goes, this volume didn't feel as strong as the previous two. BUT the introduction of an asexual character more than made up for that, for me. Alix works through similar struggles I've had and seeing her work through them and overcome them and voice her confidence in her asexuality was just really great to read. 👍

I really like Jon and Suzie. This was an interesting collection, and I'm curious to see where the story is going from here.
When does volume 4 come out again? 😉

Dear Sex Criminals,

It is understandably hard to stay witty, funny, fresh and sharp, but yet at volume three you make me laugh and most importantly care for your brilliant characters. Kudos for all the subplots, meta stuff and commentary on sex and sexuality.

An awesome addition to the series. It's hilarious, heartfelt, and meta as all hell, with plenty of commentary on both sex and comics as a medium.

I'm glad Fraction & Zdarsky address asexuality, too. It would've been easy for them to ignore the issue, given the series' premise (some people can stop time with their orgasms), but they don't and I love them for it.

If you'd rather not see penises, proceed with caution. There're TONS in here. TONS.

Comedy is hard. Sex can be hard to talk about. Fraction and Zdarsky take both on again in the 3rd volume of Sex Criminals. I could just make a bunch of sex puns but instead I'll say, Three The Hard Way sets our protagonists up for what can only promise to be an amazing...climax? DANGIT. Using the medium in fun ways, these anti heroes aren't gritty jerks you want to maybe fail. You just want them to sort their stuff out and be happy.

This installment was much weirder than the first two, and not necessarily in a good way. Still worth the read, but not quite as enjoyable in my opinion. Lots of random jumping around in the timeline and some meta stuff.

Stopped at Barnes and Noble today. Eight books and who knows how many dollars later (the husband and I made our purchases separately)...

QuoteQueen Did they have a buy 2 get 1 free of marvel graphic novels? We hit up that sale...we spent more than I want to admit! Lol. Then at checkout the lady asked if I wanted to get their B&N credit card. I just laughed! I told her that would be dangerous!!! 😝 8y

FINALLY got my hands on Sex Criminals Volume 3 🙌🏻 I feel like the release date kept getting pushed back (yes, I know I could have bought the individual comics while waiting 🙈). Time to pour a glass of wine & devour this one. Because who doesn't love a couple who has sex, stops time & robs banks?
