I loved this tale and wish it could have been stretched into a trilogy. Literally my only complaint was that it ended too soon and I wanted more pages!! So I did knock a star, bc the ending wrapped up too neatly and felt a little rushed to finish.

Renée Ahdieh has become a favorite YA author of mine; I love her writing style, world building, and badass female characters. If you haven‘t read any of her books you should! 4āļø¸

I'm so excited that I finally read this one! I was a big fan of the first book, but wasn't sure if I would like this one. I ended up loving this one more!! I loved the characters and their changes.

It took me a while to re-immerse myself in this world (shout out to @bookseriesrecaps for their always-helpful site!), but once I was back in it, I thoroughly enjoyed the conclusion of this duology. Ahdieh confronts notions of leadership, gender roles, class discrimination, and more(!), all in a brilliantly written fantasy world. Strong YA fantasy novel.

I'm trying to get through my current read so I can move on to the next! I'm actually hoping to start the Throne of Glass series or A Court of Thorns and Roses series, both by Sarah J. Maas, interestingly. I'm waiting my turn for a digital library copy, but I'm not being very patient about it. š
Though my current read is really good, I'm not a fan of the dark magic aspect of it.

A pick but...

First the good. Ahdieh‘s writing is lyrical and poetic and her characters are well formed and believable. Its also exceptionally well edited (my standard bug bear) and a book I wouldn‘t hesitate to recommend to teens BUT... the bad. I don‘t find the ages believable *at all* especially for the warriors and it‘s a jarring note throughout. I also have astronomical issues with this being marketed as a Japanese-set Mulan retelling. ā¬‡ļø¸

GlassAsDiamonds Mulan is a Chinese myth and, having lived in Shanghai I can assure you, the Chinese memories of Japanese WWII atrocities still run painful & deep. I don‘t know how much control the author had over the marketing but it‘s extraordinary tone deafness & complete, almost cruel, cultural insensitivity boggles the mind. I‘d also note a mid-duology cover change to this fluffy purple thing, a shame given the powerfully stark beauty of Flame in the Mist. (edited) 7y

iread2much Your review both makes me want to read it and not want to read it. It sounds like the marketing is the problem, but the book itself is good? Being part Japanese and growing up with Japanese stories and mythology, I have a hard time reading ā€Japanese influencedā€¯ fiction, so I hesitate to add this. Any suggestions on if I should add? 6y

GlassAsDiamonds @iread2much that‘s tough. It‘s pseudo-Japanese set in a mythical, past Japanese time period and there‘s NO escape from that because it‘s the grounding of the story. Ignoring the Mulan ā€stuffā€¯, it seems solidly researched (insofar as it‘s also got a magical system and so on) and could be accurate but I couldn‘t tell. Independent of that and the marketing, it‘s a solid ā€finding yourself/ coming of ageā€¯ story & the actual writing itself is fun. š¤” 6y

I was really looking forward to reading the sequel in this series, but I had some issues with this one. Mariko is a really strong character and I loved her romance with Okami. However towards the end, it was like the author gave up and just said fuck it, happy ending. There were so many story lines that could have been developed further and it was frustrating to have the story end so abruptly. I'm saying pick only because of the first book
