Not If I Save You First
Not If I Save You First | Ally Carter
Dear Logan, Someday I'm going to write a book: How Not to Die in Alaska - A Girl's Guide to Fashionable Survival. I bet you don't know that a hair pin can make an excellent fishing hook. You may think you can use just any kind of mud for mud masks, but trust me, you CAN'T! In a pinch, nothing starts a fire like nail polish remover. Alaska is tough. You might know this, if you ever replied to my letters. After Maddie's Secret Service dad takes a bullet for the president, he takes Maddie somewhere he thinks they'll be safe - far away from the White House and the president's son, Logan. But when Logan comes to Alaska, so does the danger. If there's one thing Alaska has taught Maddie, it's how to survive. And now her best friend's life's depends on it ...

I like Ally Carter, her books tend to be quick easy reads with smart, witty female leads. When Maddie and Logan were kids an attempt on the president (Logan‘s dad) cost him his mother and Maddie and her father (the secret service agent guarding them) left for Alaska not long after and Maddie and Logan fell out of touch. Years later they‘re in each other‘s orbits again after Logan got in trouble one too many times and is sent to Alaska.
👇👇👇

IhoardBOOKS Trouble follows Logan though and Maddie is going to have to keep him alive and safe from these attacks so she can kill him herself for ignoring her letters all these years, she‘s got dibs on his life 😂 Survival and adventure story, and of course romance as Logan and Maddie reconnect. 3y

Fun young adult action story. The president's son and the daughter of the head of his secret service detail are childhood friends. After being separated for years, they meet again. When the first son is kidnapped in the Alaskan wilderness, Ally attempts to rescue him. A fun read!

Let me start by saying I love Ally Carter & think she is an amazing author. That being said, this book felt like it dragged on & on! I am not sure what would have made it better for me, but I felt like there were things added in that didn‘t need to be. I loved the premise of the book & it held my interest, but it was long! I guess if my only complaint is that it was long, I would say I would recommend it & tell you to give it a chance.

This is the first book by Ally Carter I‘ve read, and it was definitely a fun #YA read! Teenagers trained by White House Secret Service men end up fighting for their lives against angry Russians while surviving in the Alaskan wilderness. There‘s some violence and a a dash of romance but nothing to keep me from recommending it to younger YA readers.

#TRS2019

LibrarianRyan Her Gallagher girl books are better. But this is an auto buy author for me. 5y
Daisey @LibrarianRyan I have a couple random ones on my class shelves, but after reading this I‘ll have to specifically look up the Gallagher Girls series and do more to promote her books to students. 5y
LibrarianRyan @Daisey they are great for middle - high because they are relatively clean with minimal language and almost no sex. Kissing yes. But nothing more. 5y

This was an enjoyable and quick read! Not very character driven or developed, but the plot (about a girl having to save the president's son in the middle of nowhere Alaska) was gripping.

I picked up this book as a distraction while working through a very dramatic and frustrating series, and was happily surprised. It was silly and over the top and lighthearted, but also sweet and heartwarming and action packed and well-written. This isn‘t usually the type of book that I love, but it totally pulled me in and was exactly what I needed. This was one of my first experiences listening to an audiobook, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I loved this YA novel! I am a little biased, considering I love books about running away from the government, but who doesn't love reading about a girl with a bedazzled hatchet falling for the president's son while running from a madman Russian in the middle of a storm in Alaska! Gave me all the feels!

I am willing to suspend a lot of belief when reading YA. But this was a little too far... I mean, a heroine with a bedazzled hatchet?? 🙄 #jesshowreads2018

@BookFreakOut Ah!!! I love my book sleeve!!! I do not have a single one and I‘ve been wanting one for months so this is perfect! I love the fabric 😊

True story: A patron recently recommended this book to me and unlike most patron recs, I actually wrote this one down. It was on my TBR and you somehow sensed it 😂

I‘m so excited about my gifts. I‘m home sick today so this was a great pick-me-up. Thank you so, so much!!! #makerswap

rekahlee @LibrarianRyan Thank you for organizing this and keeping tabs on everything! This was such a fun idea and I‘d love to do it again ❤️😃 7y
LibrarianRyan I promise to do it again when it cools down. Glad you had fun. 7y
BookFreakOut Yay I'm so excited you liked them! Bummer about being sick but glad this could be a bright spot in the day. I'm happy to see you got a Batman Lego, fun fact, my husband and I like to feel the packages and try and figure out what's inside. I was pretty sure I'd picked a Batman but couldn't tell which version, that merman is cracking me up! 😂 7y
rekahlee @BookFreakOut Ooh yes I‘ve heard about collectors feeling the packages to see what‘s inside! I‘ve kept the merman on the table next to me and every now and then I look over and just start laughing 😂 7y

All Carter‘s stand-alone YA survival thriller has a cute idea but is sadly a limp and predictable affair with a central romance that never catches light, cardboard cut-out antagonists, a plot that‘s full of holes, and some eye-rolling moments that combined to make me relieved to get to the end.

This was cute, but it felt very rushed. There was the typical Ally Carter wit that I love, and I highly enjoyed the Blackthorn reference, but overall it was rather unbelievable and kinda eh. Not a bad read, but if your TBR piles are as large as mine, I would pass.

One of my favorite scenes from this book ^^ Ally Carter has been a favorite author of mine ever since I read her Ghallager Girls series when I was younger (they always get me out of reading slumps lol).

Also, since I'm still pretty new to Listy, how often do you all post? I'm curious to know lol

JillR Welcome to Litsy :) I think everyone is different, I tend to post when I start a new book, then review it when I‘ve finished, with occasional posts in between... 7y
Weaponxgirl Welcome to litsy 😊 mine depends I've gone months without posting before but when I come back everyone is so so welcoming. Depends on what I've read or what I want to share otherwise. Probably once a day when I'm in full litsy and book world swing 7y

LibrarianRyan Ello! I am usually a daily poster when not bombarded by work. Or days with multiple posts. Love Ally. I liked this book. Much more Gallegher girlish then her last series. 7y
forevermint @JillR thank you! That sounds like a good system, I love how much this app is like goodreads but with a more tight knit community lol 7y
forevermint @Weaponxgirl thank you! When I first downloaded the app, I posted once and then not again until recently lol. Everyone's been really nice and I think I'm starting to get the hang of it xD seems pretty different from instagram, but in a good way! 7y
forevermint @Cinfhen thank you! That's awesome, it's nice seeing my feed fill up, I like getting exposed to lots of books and being able to share reads frequently ^^ 7y
forevermint @LibrarianRyan Oo good to know posting multiple times a day is okay lol, I've been reading a lot lately so I love talking about all my reads. And yes! Maddie is equal parts girly and awesome! I started this one because I'm waiting for my holds on the rest of the Ghallager series to come through haha 7y
LibrarianRyan @forevermint I have read all the gallergers but the last. I feel an audio binge coming on. One of my favorite lines ever is "I speak 14 languages and BOY isn't one of them". Love it. 7y
forevermint @LibrarianRyan LOL yesss that line is the best. I loved the little mention of the Blackthorne Institute in this book and Logan was all "what kind of place doesn't even have a website?" Haha 7y

I have been a fan of Ally Carter since she first said “I‘d Tell You I Love You But Then I Would Have To Kill You”. She has gone back to that fun romp of girls kick butt heroism in her new novel.

Yes, this book has its girly moments but The girl is the hero and the boy is the backwoods, doesn‘t know what he‘s doing. It‘s a fun short read that is relatively clean for the both the t‘ween and teen audiences.

I think this is my TBR for the month. But it may change. My cousin had my copy of Nevernight, and normally I have no problems with him borrowing books but this one came back with ink spots and smelling of smoke. I'm a bit annoyed with him. If I can not air the book out this month it won't get read. #readingresolutions #aprilTBR

Kaye Yuk. I cannot stand when books smell of cigarette smoke. If they are library books I take them back unread..if used books, I donate them. I have asthma and don‘t like smelling cigarettes when reading. 7y
LibrarianRyan @Kaye I agree. It's faint but with my allergies. I know I can get rid of the scent but it wan take a week or more. 7y
LibrarianRyan @Kaye the worse smelling book to come back to the library was doused with gasoline. The patron soaked the book in it and then threw it in the book. Ruined the entire book drop of materials. Burnt through VHS tape. It was lovely. Then a "smart" coworker put the soaked book in a zip locked bag and closed it so she didn't have to smell it why we waited for the police. She lucky she didn't blow up circ desk. 7y

Kaye Good grief. What would possess someone to do such a thing ? Some seriously messed up folks out there. Were you guys able to press charges or fine the guy ? I doubt he would‘ve paid one if he did that. 7y
LibrarianRyan @Kaye we fined him for every book in the book drop (not many 5 or6), the fire chief came and picked up the book. He walked in as I was throwing pencils to pop the bag (the gas had expanded and stretched the bag, we were trying to pop it before it exploded. He got mad at us for the bag (duh) and investigated. After that, no idea what happened. 7y
Kaye Wow. Who would‘ve thought that it‘d be dangerous to be a librarian ? I guess anytime you work with the public you never know what to expect. I‘m glad none of you were hurt. We had a guy in our town who got in a fight with his girlfriend, went out in the yard, doused HIMSELF with gas, and lit himself on fire 🔥.. Takes all kinds. 7y
LibrarianRyan @Kaye lord love a duck. I hear way to many bad stories. My guys a corrections officer so we way too many. 7y
FantasyChick It sucks that your book came back like that. Hopefully it airs out well! Also...I just had to say that it has been forever since I heard that expression (lord love a duck)!!!! 😊 7y
Kaye Lord love a duck 🦆? I‘ve never heard that before. Yep I suppose you do hear more stories than I would. I went down to our police station once to get permission to be in the graveyard after dark ( grandson and I going ghost hunting ), and they had a collection of knives and guns in a display case. I asked the Chief where they all came from. He looked at me like I‘m a Half-Wit and said HERE. We got them from people in town. 😮 I was shocked. 7y
Wbabdullah @kaye @librarianryan I just learned a whole lot from you two...one new phrase and what not to do with gasoline (I had no idea that it would expand in a plastic bag). Thanks! 7y
benchley1 @LibrarianRyan good to know I'm not the only one that says lord love a duck! I try to do it in my best fred astaire doing cockney...but its a it so good. I make people take books out of their bags before I'll check them 7y
benchley1 Out...learned that lesson years ago...never know what is gonna be in a.biok bag 7y
ReadingRover I just started Nevernight for the GR group BOTM and it‘s sooo good. I hope you‘re able to read it! Ghost is awesome! I‘m a huge Jason Reynolds fan. That book, When I Was The Greatest & All American Boys are probably my favs. That‘s like half of his books! 7y
LibrarianRyan @ReadingRover I was so impressed with Long Way Down , plus this is one of the Illinois Reads titles and I just talked my library into buying it, so I got first dibs. 🤓⭐️ 7y
LibrarianRyan @Kaye josh was telling me about the yearly empty of the school resource officers office. All things confiscated. It's scary stuff. 7y
LibrarianRyan @Wbabdullah you are welcome. I rarely cuss and have weird saying but Love a duck is pretty popular in various places I've lived. 7y
LibrarianRyan @benchley1 I never made patrons do that but I can understand why you would. We had one day, we had 4 staff looking for a broken nail polish bottle. We thought someone had thrown it in the book drop. 20 books were effected. Turns out all the patrons. Took 2 years for them to admit it and pay up. 7y
LibrarianRyan @ReadingRover oh I'm going to read it. I've become a Jay Kristoff addict. 7y
LazyDays Artims Fowl is a pretty cute book.😊 7y
Wbabdullah @LibrarianRyan I rarely cuss, too! It‘s got to be an extremely stressful situation for me. Anywho, this is a nice place holder :), and I‘ve never heard it before! I also hate the smell of smoke which bothers my allergies! But it seems like y‘all have some serious Fahrenheit 451 stuff happening to your books! And that‘s a shame! Didn‘t anyone ever tell those folks that books have feelings, too?! 7y

Read this beauty today. I really liked the setting and the main characters, but I was a bit disappointed in the conflict resolution tbh. The main problem between the two main characters did not come close to getting fixed imo. But, it was a fun read, and the MC was sassy, so cool cool.

Ally Carter is an automatic buy for me. I love her books so much. She manages to make kick ass heroines but still throw in a good romantic plot line but it‘s never the main focus. I wish I could just sit down and read this but I have ARCs and library books to get through first 😭 Oh yeah and work. And podcast editing. And photo editing. This week though 😭

I love Ally Carter's books. Originally I made eyebrows when this came in as middle grade, but I could see that. Her other books, while the characters are usually 15+ are clean of language and sexual activity. I really like her books and am looking forward to is one.
