My sole claim to fame as a "fan" of British football was almost buying a ticket to see Newcastle Utd. in 2008, and then just...not bothering. ? But in the early days of the pandemic, I got really into Sunderland 'Till I Die, and now I've hopped on the Lasso bandwagon, so it felt right to revisit the very first thing that ever got me thinking about football, Nick Hornby's insider look at being an obsessive Arsenal fan. So far, it still holds up!

pickMy February #bookspin: I really enjoyed this sort of autobiography with a football background or maybe stories about football mixed with autobiographical stuff. I love football (what is called soccer in a couple countries but football everywhere else) but my love of it is nothing compared to the author's real lifelong obsession. Thanks a lot for all these stories that helped me get and feel closer to some of the best teams I know and admire.

so-soThis has been sitting on my shelves for years because as much as I like Nick Hornby I know nothing about football in Great Britain. I thought that made it perfect for #liveandlearn. I liked many things about it- the bits that are more like a memoir and Hornby‘s thoughts on fanaticism. However there were a lot of things in this book that made my eyes glaze over. This would be a pick for those who care at all about Arsenal. For me it was just so-so.

Absolutely brilliant analogy that has never occurred to me. Maybe I'm just particularly dense!! I'm very familiar with superstitions sports fans have , I have some of them myself. This is put so brilliantly.
Yes, yes, I know all the jokes. What else could I have expected at Highbury? But I went to Chelsea and to Tottenham and to Rangers, and saw the same thing: that the natural state of a football fan is bitter disappointment, no matter what the score.

Day5 of #augustofpages I have to go back decades to the last (& probably only) sports book I enjoyed. But it's a doozie! Fever Potch is Nick Hornbys original love story to Arsenal FC. And when I went looking for my copy, it turned out I had two ⚽️🏆❤️ #bookphotochallenge
