As they enter the frozen, forbidden landscape of the Northwhere the days length does not equal the nights, where after sunset the sky burns in streaks of colorFadlan soon discovers that he has been unwillingly enlisted to combat the terrors in the night that come to slaughter the Vikings, the monsters of the mist that devour human flesh. If you like Vikings then this short read might interest you. This book is classified as a Historical Fiction. It is set in Russia where a clan of Vikings sets out to go to war with the Eaters of the Dead. It is told from a man who is from Baghdad. He is from a different culture so his description of the Vikings are interesting from a viewpoint of another culture.

A really interesting Beowulf retelling.

I'm a pretty big Crichton fan anyway, so I was pretty sure I'd enjoy it and I wasnt disappointed.

It was filled with what would have been the most up to date and accurate historical information of the time, though some of it has since been pushed aside.

Regardless, the story itself was cohesive, easy to follow and engaging. A good book.

#3books #Ireadbasedsolelyontheircovers
This is probably the most challenging prompt for me because I hardly ever chose a book based solely on the cover. Even if the cover catches my attention first, I usually do a little background research before I invest time/money in the book. That said,
(1) Reckless Magic I picked as part of a challenge because of the nice cover, but the book was really disappointing ⬇️

eeclayton (2) Eaters of the Dead (or The 13th Warrior) because Michael Crichton+Vikings=enjoyment
(3) Norse Mythology has one of the prettiest covers I ever seen

Excellent fictional story framed as a scholarly work with citations and fake bibliography. A really fun retelling of Beowulf!

After 8 ebooks, time for a paperback...

#Goodreads2019ReadingChallenge

About the book, well, it got 3.7 on Goodreads. But, for me, I don't understand half of what the author was trying to say. Too boring.

Relaxed by the fire earlier with a book. I‘ve got to get this one done by Friday for book club. It has been a STRUGGLE! The first 60 or so pages I plodded on. Now that the action has started it‘s more interesting.

TheSpineView I tried to read it years ago and ended up bailing. 😏 5y
Skyrimir I probably would have if I hadn‘t bailed on the last book club pick...I‘ve got guilt! Haha 5y

1.5/5⭐ I'm glad this book, for some reason, lit a new fire in me to read historical nonfiction. However, the book itself didn't capture me. The main character's generalizations of other cultures, the plodding & dry progression, the complete lack of horror elements like I expected, & the almost non-existent Beowulf retelling made it really difficult for me to focus as I was reading. Completely forgettable. #projectSAMS #projectTBR #screamathon

I didn't know the premise of this book was based on real history. After reading the introduction I suddenly, for the first time in my life, have a real thirst for diving into nonfiction books. Weird. 😮 #projectTBR #projectSAMS #screamathon

In honor of the #reversereadathon & a brilliant idea from @swishandflick I'm starting a series of #thisorthatgiveaway (s) as part of a massive #bookpurge. I have more books than I could read in my lifetime; plus I keep getting distracted by more. So, I'm purging the ones that I've read, will never read, have bailed on, or have duplicates of.
First, are books by 2 of my favorite authors. Comment below THIS or THAT. I'll pick 2 winners Sun 9pm EST.

BookwormAHN The Douglas Preston books please. Thanks for the chance 😺 6y
AmyG This! I have never read any of his books. Thank you so much. 6y
Karkar Oh these are both good authors. I think I would go with That. 6y

Chrys I understand the need to sometimes purge books you realize you won‘t read to make room for new interests. I would be a THAT, as I haves enjoyed what I‘ve read by him and am getting my 15 yr old into him now 😀. Thank you for the giveaway opportunity 6y

Bookwomble I always assumed The 13th Warrior film was based on Beowulf - does Creighton reference Beowulf? 6y
Wellreadhead @Bookwomble Yes, the last half of the book is basically a retelling of Beowulf. 6y

When it starts out talking about the provenance of an ancient manuscript, it does no favors. It's a rereretelling and translation of this manuscript which starts with, "Praise to Master Muhammed" ...and I'm out. Listed as fiction but manuscript is nonfiction. Done. No more. Not gonna try it. Sad.

OSChamberlain Seems interesting to me. Lol 8y
CouchCrewChief @OSChamberlain Good luck! LoL. I was looking for just a Viking based novel, something fun and light and it was anything but. When I hit that I was just like, "Nope. Not at all what I wanted or expected." That's probably why I bailed so quick. Way out of left field. Maybe I read it wrong, not for me. 8y

I just got Eaters of the Dead in the mail for a traveling book project! I have two weeks to read it, mark in it, and send it out to the next reader. Out of the lineup, this title is probably the one I'm the least excited for. But maybe I'm being to hasty to judge?
