Pioneer Girl
Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography | Laura Ingalls Wilder
Long hidden in archives, Laura Ingalls Wilders original handwritten autobiography is a tribute to her family and her experiences as a pioneer. Written for an older audience, Pioneer Girl is her first-person narrative of the settling of Dakota Territory, the building of the railroad west, and life as a pioneer. The stories in this autobiography formed the basis of Wilders international best-selling autobiographical novels, known as the Little House Series. For the first time, readers will have full access to the original manuscript that began it all.Written in six tablets on lined paper, Pioneer Girl follows the Ingalls family through Kansas, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, back to Minnesota, and on to Dakota Territory over a sixteen-year period. Using revised Pioneer Girl manuscripts edited by Wilders daughter Rose Wilder Lane, letters written between Wilder and Lane, photographs, newspapers, and other sources, Pamela Smith Hill and other editors of the Pioneer Girl Project lead readers through Wilders early recollections and her first attempts at publication. While Laura Ingalls Wilder is a familiar figure, Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography re-introduces readers to the woman who defines the pioneer experience and gives new insight into her motivations and experiences. For more information visit: www.pioneergirlproject.org

On its own, LIW‘s memoir would be fine and an interesting side note to her fiction books. But this annotated volume knocks it out of the park, adding a richness and depth to her manuscript it would otherwise lack. The amount of work that went into this was enormous and it shows. I loved reading this.

LeahBergen I loved this, too! 6mo

For the #letterp, I would recommend the tagged book, especially if you are a big fan of the Little House books. I usually don‘t request a specific book for Christmas or my birthday, but this was one that I had to get my hands on asap. It fills in a lot of the gaps that the Little House books gloss over and you realize why they were marketed specifically to children. And yes there are content warnings for this book. #alphabetgame

I‘ve been putting this off for awhile due to intimidation & I finally read it! Unfortunately, I felt like it was slow-going & way too detailed for my level of interest. PG is LIW‘s adult memoir that she tried to get published. Nobody would take it so she & her daughter reformatted some of it into the first Little House book. That series of course was a success & this one was not published until 2014. This is a beautiful & well-researched book!

Today is the 152nd anniversary of Laura Ingalls Wilder‘s birth! If you haven‘t read her memoir, Pioneer Girl, I highly recommend it — life wasn‘t all gingham and maple sugar, and this book gives a glimpse into just how skillfully Wilder transformed her impoverished childhood into the fictional comfort food cherished by generations.

Also, as a point of pride, my copy came from De Smet, SD, the real-life Little Town on the Prairie.

LeahBergen I love how heavily illustrated this edition is. ❤️ 6y

What do you do when there is a local bookstore at your summer destination but you don't have room for your books in the bag? Buy them anyway!

BookishMarginalia That's what I'd do! 7y
Birdsong28 You'll find a way to fit them in your bag I'm sure!!!! If not just buy another bag! 📖📚 7y

In honor of Laura Ingalls Wilder birthday: site of the Ingalls Homestead outside of DeSmet SD. The cottonwood trees Pa Ingalls planted are still there. Members of L I Wilder Society go out and pick up fallen twigs and tie them to your bag when you make a purchase.

Pioneer Girl is Laura Ingalls Wilder's original autobiographical manuscript, published by the SD Historical Society a couple years ago (and on library waiting lists ever since). With all the annotations and photos, it weighs in at 400 pages, but I found them all mesmerizing. I loved her biographical novels as a child, but loved even more being able to 'read between the lines' from her adult perspective.

Speaking of Little House... this is an absolute gem, with dense annotations and really insightful commentary on the tension between history and fiction in Ingalls Wilder's writing. A healthy dose of reality for those who, like me, grew up with her books. Highly recommended.
