Current | Tim Johnston
A Stunning New Novel from the Bestselling Author of Descent Tim Johnston, whose 2015 national bestseller Descent was called "astonishing" by the Washington Post and "unforgettable" by the Miami Herald, returns with another tour de force about the indelible impact of acrime on the lives of innocent people. When two young women leave their college campus in the dead of winter for a 700-mile drive north to Minnesota, they suddenly find themselves fighting for their lives in the icy waters of the Black Root River, just miles from home. One girl's survival, and the other's death--murder, actually--stun the citizens of a small Minnesota town, thawing memories of another young woman who lost her life in the same river ten years earlier, and whose killer may yet live among them. One father is forced to relive his agony while another's greatest desire--to bring a killer to justice--is revitalized . . . and the girl who survived the icy plunge cannot escape the sense that she is connected to that earlier unsolved case by more than a river. Soon enough she's caught up in an investigation of her own that will unearth long-hidden secrets, and stoke the violence that has long simmered just below the surface of the town. Souls frozen in time, ghosts and demons, the accused and the guilty, all stir to life in this cold northern place where memories, like treachery, run just beneath the ice, and where a young woman can come home but still not be safe. Brilliantly plotted, unrelentingly suspenseful, and beautifully realized, The Current is a gripping page-turner about how the past holds the key to the future as well as an unbreakable grip on the present.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fast paced and thrilling, with great plot and characters. I stayed up way past my bedtime with this one!

Since I don't read suspenseful books exclusively, I may have enjoyed it more than those who do? I'm sure there are elements of this story that have been done and redone. I was fully invested the entire time and, even with an ending that I'm not sure I'm entirely satisfied with, I found this a true page-turner!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Tim Johnston is becoming one of my auto- buy in hardcover books. Not a thriller, sort of a mystery, but a book I fall into and become part of. Absolutely loved it!

One of the best thrillers I‘ve read in a very long time. Memorable, nuanced characters; jaw-droppingly gorgeous prose; nail-biting suspense. It has it all. Definitely check this one out if you haven‘t already.

Two college girls are driving to Minnesota in the winter when the car leaves the road and almost slides onto a frozen river. Just as they exhale a sigh of relief, headlights appear in their back window. The car that they think is there to rescue them pushes them into the river. This gripping premise kept me going, but I wished for some edits. Long descriptions of dreams and interior monologues bogged down the story, but I enjoyed the characters.

TrishB The actual storyline sounds like it should be great! 3y

I‘m a bit surprised I liked this book. There were characters needed to tell the tale, and others there like a dangling participle. Very soon into the story, a mystery was introduced, but it connected to an unsolved mystery from 10 years prior. And the later took center stage. But somehow it worked, and I stayed engaged.

BookDragonNotWorm I love the description likening characters to a dangling participle! Made me think of how some plots are like split infinitives! 😂 4y

Between a PICK and a SO-SO
This book was a slow burn, meticulously told, eerily atmospheric to the point of melancholy, with characters that you felt you actually knew at the conclusion of the book.

Doing #bookspin for the first time. My #bookspin book is still being shipped to me, so I started my #doublespin this weekend (Six Four by Hideo Yokoyama; good so far but 600+ pages!). All of a sudden my #3 book, tagged, came available as a library ebook for one week (skip the line!), so I started that one too. And my #10 is available on audio right now! @TheAromaofBooks

I listened to this book because it was on the Modern Mrs Darcy Summer guide this year. It was a good thriller with some loose ends for the reader to decide about, but not in an unsatisfactory way. I thought this might be a ghost story but the fear factor turned out to be much more real. It was a little confusing to me on audio because it sometimes jumped back in time and I didn‘t always notice. But I‘ll definitely read more of this author.

Great thriller about a small town and the secrets it holds. I listened to this on audio and was confused in the beginning but as I got to know the story it made sense. I enjoyed the depth of the characters and the story. There were several big things the book did not wrap up at the end. We are left wondering about 2 out of the 3 mysteries in the book. Hmm. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

MyNamesParadise I absolutely loved his book The Descent. I don‘t like the sound of things not being wrapped up at the end, hmmm will still give it a try though. I‘m curious! 5y

ModernMrsDarcy.com Summer 2019 Reading List

This book is about two college girls who take a road trip to Minnesota during the winter – think ice and snow. As fate would have it, their car skids of the road in an ice storm and ends up in a frozen lake. The car sinks and only one of the girls survives. It‘s a roller coaster of a thriller. Although, I do have to admit, I was a little confused by the ending.

I first heard about The Current on the From the Front Porch podcast, but I am sure y‘all have heard it‘s made Anne Bogel‘s summer reading guide - I can certainly see why: I‘m not usually a thriller fan, but this one had excellent character development and a mesmerizingly ethereal tone. Although, I felt like the end was a little ambiguous and I wanted to know MORE! Sequel perhaps?

Just finished this one and really enjoyed it. It feels a bit like a thriller but more literary, a bit more slow and thoughtful. At first I was a little confused as he started to introduce some different timelines (although he doesn‘t specify , so you‘re trying to figure it out ). But once I kept going it made sense. Well written, well developed characters. Just a great book! (although the ending left some questions unanswered).

A couple things about this novel bothered me. The switches between points of view and timeline (present vs. past) with each chapter were somewhat confusing, possibly more so on audio. I also found the ending anti-climactic, with some additional unanswered questions. But despite that, I thought it was a good story. So I‘m giving it a pick. Barely.

This was a good, not great book, imho. I‘d give it 3.5 stars, as it was long and difficult to follow at times. The story is great, but I‘m not sure it doesn‘t need some editing. Set in Minnesota and Iowa, it has a very dark feel to it.

Redwritinghood Agree. Good, but definitely could have used some editing. 6y
Samplergal @Redwritinghood I was confused some of the time with all the back and forth. If the chapters were labels 10 yrs ago: Danny or something. Maybe it was so long because I had to reread many pages. 6y

Just ok overall. The main issue I had with this book was the padding. In quite a few places there was writing that just wasn‘t needed for the story. Had the writing been tighter, it may have been a better book. Audio narration also so-so. 3⭐️. On #Hoopla
