The Bird and the Blade
The Bird and the Blade | Megan Bannen
A sweeping and tragic debut novel perfect for fans of The Wrath and the Dawn and Megan Whalen Turner. The Bird and the Blade is a lush, powerful story of life and death, battles and riddles, lies and secrets from author Megan Bannen. Enslaved in Kipchak Khanate, Jinghua has lost everything: her home, her family, her freedom . . . until the kingdom is conquered by enemy forces and she finds herself an unlikely conspirator in the escape of Prince Khalaf and his irascible father across the vast Mongol Empire. On the run, with adversaries on all sides and an endless journey ahead, Jinghua hatches a scheme to use the Kipchaks exile to return home, a plan that becomes increasingly fraught as her feelings for Khalaf evolve into an impossible love. Jinghuas already dicey prospects take a downward turn when Khalaf seeks to restore his kingdom by forging a marriage alliance with Turandokht, the daughter of the Great Khan. As beautiful as she is cunning, Turandokht requires all potential suitors to solve three impossible riddles to win her handand if they fail, they die. Jinghua has kept her own counsel well, but with Khalafs kingdomand his very lifeon the line, she must reconcile the hard truth of her past with her love for a boy who has no idea what shes capable of . . . even if it means losing him to the girl whod sooner take his life than his heart.

I‘m not crying, you are.

Wow. What a journey. I don‘t have words. And I need a tissue... or two... or three.

A retelling of the opera Turnadot retold during the mongol empire. It‘s possible my favorite part of this book was the author note, but not in a bad way.

A YA retelling of one of my favorite operas, Turandot. I cried at the end.

From debut author (and librarian) Megan Bannen comes a harrowing story set in an Mongol Empire in the 13th-century. Jinghua's story was rich and full of history, family, love, sacrifice, and riddles. Though there were some troupes, I absolutely enjoyed reading this story and cannot wait for Bannen's next novel.

Cinfhen Is YA your go to!????! 6y
LibrarianRyan Predominantly since I used to work with kids. Plus I still review for publishers. That‘s also why you see me post so many pB. But I love a good brainless mystery. It just really depends on my mood. This collection has only been going for about 4 years. My last collection was donated to my PL because they had no SFF or urban fantasy. That is where all my Star Wars books went. Plus my iPad is full of erotica because I also reviewed it for LJ. 6y
LibrarianRyan I‘m really just all over the place but I own more YA because I don‘t keep most my books after reading them. Special ones yes, when I want a brainless best seller I usually get it from my library. But we have a harder time borrowing Ya. I currently work for a gov library and we mainly borrow from other academic and research libraries. Lots of universities have children‘s books for training teachers but very few YA. MG is a crap shoot. UofI has most 6y

4/5 stars from me. I really enjoyed it and will be looking forward to Bannen‘s next book. I think this is the first novel I‘ve read that featured positive muslim characters who talk about their faith. There WERE a couple things that didn‘t sit well with me, namely the depiction of suicide and the acceptance of the trope that when males are mean to females that‘s affection, but Bannen did her homework and wrote a great adventure.

I strategically pick up my holds right before they cancel if I'm in the middle of another book so I can hopefully get to them before they're due...only grabbing the top two today, the other two can wait a bit! 😆

This hurts my soul because the author is a librarian but OMG I HATED THE MAIN CHARACTER! I tried but I'm exhausted by her at page 152.

🌟🌟🌟🌟 I‘ve been lucky to have some great reads lately!! Might be because I‘ve become a bit picky. Either way, I‘m happy! This book was SO good, even if it‘s heart breaking. It‘s set in Mongolian era in the 13th century. Something I have not read before.
